Comments (23)Quote is coming from the GC however the HVAC is part of his own company so he is not subbing it out. Finally got a breakdown of where the money is going: Seems the labor cost sets a very high cost base but maybe that is normal around the DC area. They did quote me a dual lenox system for 23K. Not sure how they could do that for 23k based on the labor cost I see here. Insulation will be flash and batt? thin closed cell foam layer with added fiberglass to fill it out. Furnace 987m 3190$ x2 6380$ (24-60 KBTUh) evap coil Aluminum 500$ x2 1000$ Evolution A/C 187B 3750$ x2 7500$ (2 Ton each) Ventilator ?? 220$ x2 440$ Evolution controls 400$ x2 800$ Ducts&Mats 1785$ 1785$ Labor 18500$ 18500$ Extras, wires, pans etc 1400$ 1400$...See MoreI have no idea if my HVAC quote is bananas or not
Comments (47)He says that the 8320s don't have dehumidification control, but the 8321s like this one do: https://customer.honeywell.com/en-US/Pages/Product.aspx?cat=HonECC Catalog&pid=TH8321U1006/U&category=VisionPRO%C2%AE&catpath=1.3.33.1.36 & rank=5&v1=Sort.1.Product.Rank&asc=1 (for some reason I can't paste this link in so that ti will work. When you paste into a browser, you have to replace the space between ECC and Catalog with a (percentSign)20) When I look at the product info sheet for this 8321 myself, the TH8321U1006/U is indeed 2H/2C, and the description says: "The L terminal is an input or output.; Selectable: Programmable or Non-Programmable; Includes Dehumidification Control." It doesn't mention a dehumidification range setting anywhere on the page though like the IAQ does; TH9421C1004/U:. "Includes Humidification Control with or without Frost Protection, Dehumidification using Whole House Dehumidifier or Air Conditioning with High or Low speed fan, Advanced Patented Ventilation Control and Advanced Dual Fuel Heat Pump Control." And at the bottom shows a dehumidification range setting of 40-80% RH. I looked at the owner's manual for the TH8321U1006. It does show how to set up for dehumidification and it says that it can use the a/c to do so. Can the IAQ actually control the VS furnace vs-like, whereas the 8321s can only control the VSs 2-stage? How do I counter? This post was edited by barbja on Wed, May 1, 13 at 10:04...See Moredeciding to do energy star program, or just hvac
Comments (65)You should post your question in the fireplace forum to get lots of opinions. There is such a forum on gardenweb. My neighbor had some sort of deluxe fireplace installed. Not sure if it was an upgrade or if he never had one. He goes through mountains of wood but says it heats his whole house. He has a family room with a cathedral ceiling that has an opening to the second floor hallway and since heat rises...I think he said he used 5 cords of wood. I'm not sure, but I do recall thinking it was a lot of wood and it wasn't free (maybe one batch was free). I don't know how healthy that is to heat your house all the time with wood. Maybe it has doors and a filter...I don't know. He just got his gas bill and it was $50. Mine was $115, but I did have my mother-in-law here for a week with her "thin" FL blood so we had to keep the heat at 70-72 rather than 66-68. Neighbor and I both have tankless water heater. You might consider wood as a cheaper back up option and also ask on the other forum about a unit that can use gas and/or wood. That's what I would do if I had the $. On another note...MY gas usage on the current bill was higher than last year. Last year we used 65 ccf for a 28 day bill period with avg temp on bill listed as 49.6 This year we used 82 Ccf on a 33 day cycle with a temp of 45.5. The longer bill cycle, lower temp and mother-in-law makes it hard for me to see if my 97% heater, air sealing and tankless SAVED me anything over my old 91% furnace without air seal and my 57% water heater. I have to wait for a bill cycle that more closely matches the temp etc to tell if it helped or not....See MoreProblems with HVAC in 1958 Cape Cod
Comments (26)"Generally, I am being told that my oil furnace is probably at the end of its life, being at least approx. 25 years old and should consider replacing now. The 2nd contractor that wants to replace existing with 4 ton furnace, states that the current one is not large enough to handle the size of the house. The rest, so far, want to add a separate system for upstairs." ----------- When the cooling A-Coil is set directly on top of the furnace the huge oil furnace heat/exchanger causes a lot of restricted back-pressure leading to a big drop in static pressure which reduces the velocity of airflow. That along with possibly improper duct design & return air filter areas would greatly reduce airflow. I am betting a 60K would heat your hone in that climate. Do your own whole house load-calc: http://www.loadcalc.net/ Or/and, do the floors separate. Print the instructions & follow them; including clicking on thr SIZING LINK when load-calc is satisfactory completed......See Moreenergy_rater_la
