Comments (23)Good Friday all, TGIF!! This has been a long week at work. I have been filling in for two who are on vacation for the month of August and I have been juggling. One more tough week and it will seem like I am on vacation at work when they return to doing their job!! Donna, your project sounds fun! Did you do the design work yourself or have someone help you? I love remodeling projects! Jan, don't be so hard on yourself! We are allowed to be as long-winded as we want here without judgment! What did you and DH do for your anniversary? Patty, good to see you here. I miss you since you went over to Facebook! Hope your meds are doing their job. Please don't stay gone for so long! Marci, sounds like you should be thinking about retiring! I really hope this school year goes well for you. When I am stressing I try to remember my favorite mantra "Be here now" it reminds me that I need to focus on the right now and not on one minute from now or one minute ago, etc. The other thing I do when I am obsessing is something our good friend Raeanne told me once: "Throw your troubles to the ground and let your spirit soar" These sound simple but for me they really work. Try it. Now!! LOL Let your beautiful spirit soar today! Raeanne, I am thinking of you. Good luck tomorrow I know it's going to be a smashing success! I hope we get another youtube of the event - especially the horse-drawn wagon. QOD: What are your weekend plans? We may have Bill affects here so I am kind of praying for some rain so I can stay inside and get some housework done! Also, I will be making a batch of my zucchini relish....See MoreScreaming Stainless Steel Sink
Comments (22)"Great job Trebruchet, looks great. But I have to be a "Debbie Downer" and ask, "since stainless steel scratches so easily, won't that sink scratch once again when, hmm, I dunno, a fork is dropped in it, or a pan is rinsed?" All your hard work undone in an instant. It's why I like Silgranit or enameled cast iron sinks better (ducking as Treb throws a fry pan at me or something)." Sahmmy: Thanks and fair criticism of whatever I post is always welcomed and encouraged. I like assessing the renewability of surfaces. Silegranit is a great sink and difficult to scratch, but if you manage to do it, it's pretty much unrepairable. Same with enameled and chips. I just present the trade-offs and let readers decide. I recently posted a thread called Silgranite Sink Experiment, but can't seem to find it. Any link would be appreciated....See MoreKeeping sponge dry in kitchen sink
Comments (24)I mainly use an OXO brush. It has a little holder/drainer that it sits in. My scrubbing pad and Brillo/SOS pads sit in a flower pot under the sink with the draining dish underneath. I occasionally put the OXO brush heads and scrubber through the DW. I should do it more often but about the only time I hand wash is if I need to wash something while my DW is running. I do try to remember to pop it in there if I'm turning my DW on at night after all kitchen work is done for the day. Maybe I'm missing something about the bacteria issue. Don't you all rinse your dishes in hot water when you're done hand washing them? I know they say to keep your hot water tank at 120 for energy savings and due to potential burns but we keep ours at 140 as that is hot enough to kill bacteria. When I hand wash dishes, I rinse them with all hot water so the water is at 140, or pretty darn close, and will kill any bacteria left on the dishes by the scrubber or brush. I also use the sprayer to give the brush and scrubber and good, hard rinse. If you google around, there is evidence that certain diseases, like Legionaire's, thrive in hot water tanks set around 120. But a 140 tank of water is hot enough to kill them. We rarely get sick around here. I've actually been pleasantly surprised that we haven't gotten sick more often lately since we had a 5 year old move in with us last summer and she started K-grade in the fall. People warned us that we would get sick from all the germs the kid would bring home from school but it hasn't happened. She has had plenty of colds but the rest of us haven't caught them. I wash my hands in the water as hot as I can stand it. Just short of scalding temp. So maybe that is helping with spread of sickness, too? I dunno. Food for thought, I guess....See MorePaint color/counters/sink-don't trust my taste
Comments (24)I worry that b/c of everything else going on between the two rooms it will be busy. They're not overly big expanses, really, especially being split as they are between the two spaces...and I really do like it. Part of it, I think, is b/c I've always disliked swirly counters, so I'm confused why I like this, so then I second guess myself. At some point the cabinets will all be the same color..but we'll have the brown of the floor, the brown of the trim around the inside of the doorways/windows, white trim around doorways/windows/floor, light blue cabinets, plus my husband wants to build a very large table for the dining area, and he wants to build it, I believe, out of like butcher block and cedar. I can't remember exactly, but it seems like..over the top. I think I need to find out exactly what he plans to do w/the table. I worry the whole thing altogether will be a LOT and I'll need to tone things down w/a lot of white to balance it out. Not sure if that makes sense. What I dislike about the laminate is the exact opposite thing everyone warned me about w/the white--I detest putting something on the counter and hearing the crunch of crumbs. Or putting my hand on it and feeling crumbs. Seeing spills. The things that "blend in" so I set things down and didn't see the water or whatever and now my papers are wet. I'd thought maybe if it were white there would be no excuses. (tho in reality it's probably wishful thinking) The laminate we got from a countertop place that I believe only does laminate, We installed it, and it was pretty inexpensive. I'm not sure what it costs elsewhere, but 11' was less than $300, so I don't think that was too bad. If I did something different, I wouldn't feel horrible about replacing it, but I wouldn't do it right away....See Morechesters_house_gw
