Slashing that unbaked loaf of bread!

I've always struggled to slash the tops of my french, artisan loaves before baking. My DD who loves to bake offered this advice. Stick your knife in hot water for a minute to get it hot before slicing. Use a sharp straight bladed knife. I ran it under hot water for a minute or so, the knife felt warm, not really burning hot, dried it with a towel and easily ran the knife across the whole length of the loaf with no pulling, tugging or tearing. Actually probably overdid it. Nothing could have been easier. Give it a try, see if it works for you. I just used my 9 inch Henckels that I use for pretty much everything and rarely sharpen it. Where have I missed this?
