Federal Tax Credit Question

To be able to use the Federal Tax Credit, does it require the purchase of both a Central A/C Condenser with A-Coil and the furnace/air handler or can it apply to just a A/C condenser with the A-Coil?

For a central a/c system, the system must be 12.5 EER and 15 SEER minimum. Both requirements must be met. I don't think that the SEER/EER requirements can be met with just the a/c coil and condenser.

Bob,

This is part of "The Energy Policy act of 2005". Attched is a link to the policy and it explains the credits suchas High efficiency furnaces $150, High Efficiency Central A/C units $300, High Efficiency fans for heating/cooling $50,... Split systems must have a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating of 15 AND and Energy Efficiency Rating of 12.5. Total credit max is $500 and the deadline is December 31, 2007.

As the credits are listed separatly, I would assume you can get the $300 credit for the Condensing unit & Evaporator coil (Less furnace), but heres the catch. You have to buy an ARI certified set of coil and matching condensing unit. The sites below will help you. Also contact a local A/C installer and get a second opinion.

Remember this is a "Tax Credit" so if you can google the tax credit form, it should definately explain what is and is not covered.

Any reputable dealer has not "jacked" the price up $1500 or we'd never get the job. It's a bonus to the home owner. I personally want us all to win. The consumer wins with the tax credit, the dealer wins by selling higher end equipment, and the country wins by using less energy. To answer price increases, naturally prices have gone up in the past two years, especially last summer when metal prices, and gas prices were skyrocketing. Adversely, we as dealers had to lower our margins to stay competitive with the "whores" of the hvac world who are hanging by a thread and practically begging for work. Also, increases in minimum SEER rating for air conditioning units raised prices quite a bit, and the new R410a refrigerant (mandatory in all units made after this year) also typically cost a bit more. All in all, units are getting more efficient, companies have tightened their pockets, and consumers have gotten more price driven. The market has changed in a short time, but now is definitely the time to buy as all these factors have created an edge for the consumer. As I always say, make sure you use a reputable company for the installation, and stick with a quality system. There is a lot of junk out there...equipment and installers.

The smaller tonnage systems (3 tons and less) are more efficient than the larger tonnage systems, and can meet the 15 SEER, 12.5 EER, and 8.5 HSPF. It's just a matter of fact. You have choices with a 5 ton hp that gets the tax credit, just not nearly as many if you had a 3-ton system. As far as the AHRI website, if there is no furnace in the furnace column, the heat pump condenser (outdoor unit) is matched with an (all-electric) air handler as the indoor unit and not a furnace. It's easy to distinguish. An air handler consists of the matching indoor coil, fan, and electric resistance strips for aux heating (no furnace involved). If there is a furnace shown in the column, the "indoor unit" is just the matching refrigerant coil for the heat pump condenser. You need to find matches without a furnace. There are many. Understand? What concerns me is them quoting very large backup heat furnaces. I'd be surprised if you needed over 100k backup heat. Was a load calc performed? Lennox or Trane either way you would get a good system if installed properly and sized properly. I sure hope Trane would make some changes. 2-stage would be beneficial for humidity control, but not necessary by any means. What coil was quoted for the Lennox setup? If using a Lennox CX34-49C coil, the G60UHV-60C-110 furnace would make the system qualify. If they use an Aspen coil they don't have to oversize the furnace.

When I said 'fillable,' I meant fillable on the computer. The meaning of this sentence is ambiguous/unclear, with either of the two different alternatives I mentioned being the possible intended message.
