I love soft shell crabs, but they are not commonly available, and they are not available year round.

I saw some in the store today.

For dinner, deep fried soft shell crabs on beets and hosta blossoms!

Have never been a big fan of them. BUT yesterday saw them in Shoprite... $3.99 EACH and looked pretty small?? SIL LOVES them... kinda funny fo someone who "hates" several food items she has NEVER EVEN TASTED, but is willing to eat EVERYTHING in a crab... sans eyes?!?

Could it be from lack of bees and pollination? My quinalt kind of look how you describe but the fruit is too small too tell. The stalks and fruit are small and hidden under the leaves though. The plants look fine and green but the tips of the leaves are turning brown as if I fed them too much or they are just old. It doesnt look like a disease though. Who knows...

I bought a home kit for soil testing, because we were renting and didn't want to put too much (we ended up putting a ton into the yard in the end). Anyway, we have aimed for edible landscaping so the plants are sprinkled throughout the yard. One tomato plant is probably crowded as the squash 2 feet away grew literally 4 feet (and then died back after getting powdery mildew). The eggplant there is still kicking though, along with the eggplant my son decided to prune for us by cutting off all the leaves. It refuses to die. One section of garden near an orange tree wouldn't grow anything, until we mulched it and now it is doing much better. one section of garden is under-sunned. We planted it when it looked like the trees were in shock from being hacked right when we moved in. Then they came out with dense leaves and shaded some area. The peppers were definitely suffering from drought followed by heavy water as I was trying to learn about this "water deeply and not frequently" philosophy. You have given me lots of ideas. Luckily my lettuce is growing beautifully as did the kale and chard. The stevia and other herbs are gorgeous. So we do have some success!

new kitten- keep it or find home?

Have you checked around your neighborhood, talked to all of the homeowners within a several block radius, and called local animal control/sheriff/police and your local shelters and vets to see if anyone is missing this kitten? If not, you should do so. Once you've taken care of that, then you can decide whether or not to adopt this little one. For the last 8 yrs, I've had one or more new felines appear on my farm nearly every year. After capturing the new cat and making the obligatory call to the sheriff's dept to file a "found cat" report, I integrate him/her into my household. #15 just showed up a month or so ago and is still in the integration process. I use a technique similar to pamghatten, but I fill the doorway to the newbie's room with baby gates rather than a screen door. The gates serve the same purpose, though - to allow the cats to see, smell, and talk to each other without actual physical contact. The period of time the newbie stays in the gated room depends on everyone's reactions to each other. When I feel everyone is ready for face-to-face introductions, I usually put the newbie in a harness (NOT collar) and light leash so that I can control matters if unpleasantness occurs. But my newbies are usually young adult, intact toms (neutered as soon as I capture them) with a lot of aggression issues. It would probably not be necessary to leash a young kitten - esp. a female - though you would certainly need to keep a constant eye on your older cats to make sure they don't injure her. You're less likely to have significant conflict with a female kitten than with a male kitten. Males tend to be relentlessly rowdy and bothersome. Still, there will be an adjustment period, esp. for your timid girl. I would expect, though, that your timid girl will learn to enjoy a baby playmate once she gets over her initial terror and realizes that the kitten isn't trying to kill her. My biggest concern is that the timid girl's tentative health status may deteriorate if she becomes badly stressed during the kitten's integration period. That's something to consider. I plant them under trees (the north east corner of the shade at noon) or next to a wall or house so I don't have to remember to shade them. Totally works. My pepper plant that gets the most shade is the only one still blooming in the 115 degree heat and the peppers look beautiful. The plant that gets the least shade has pods burnt to a crisp. If you live somewhere where the sun is intense (not just "oh, summer feels soooooooo miserable, it is 90 out), you have to have a shade plan. Think of how peppers grow in the wild--in landscapes and not in neat rows with nothing between them and the sun. So, if your climate is closer to where peppers are native, try to recreate the shade conditions they would get in the wild. Where I live, they grow under trees, so I do just that.

Thanks Jim. I often go to the Oyster Bar to satisfy my soft pot for soft shell crabs.

klseiverd, that's where I got my soft shell crabs, also $3.99 each. But everyday they ran out fast. People were buying them like they were free.

I got a rain check for some more. I will see if they will stock up again, Normal price would be $5.99 to $7.99 each around here (NYC).

Hosta blossoms? Like Hostas in your yard? What do they taste like?

klseiverd, hosta in my yard and may be yours too. But this is not the expensive variety. These are plain Jane hostas.

Hostas are grown in Japan as vegetables. The blossom stems and buds taste like aspargus, tender and mild.

They look wonderful Dcarch.

I had my first taste of soft shell crabs down in New Orleans some time ago, and have been craving them ever since. Maybe I'll find them here in Mi. someday. But I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks Sol. I wish you would try to make softshell crabs. You are such a great cook, I am sure you will have amazing results.

If you have difficulty finding them, you can find plenty on Amazon.

They only cost over $100.00 for a doz. :-)

On our recent trip to Canada, DH was served a crispy soft shell in a bowl of garlic leek broth as one of the 5 courses on a tasting menu. He's not normally a fan, but said this one was tastier with the addition of the broth.

Compumom, that sounds like a great way to enjoy soft shell crabs. The problem with most recipes for crabs is over seasoning. That's why I don't like most crab cake recipes. They all taste exactly like fish cakes.

So I went back for some more. This time I used a sautÃÂ©ed recipe.

After I sautÃÂ©ed the crabs, there was a lot of juice in the pan. It occurred to me that what a wonderful juice it would be to use to make risotto.

I still had some of TeresaÃ¢ÂÂs real field harvested wild rice. I can tell you that wild rice risotto made with crab juice was absolutely divine.

Thank you, thank you Teresa, for your very generous gift of wild rice, which has given me so much enjoyment.

Oh dcarch, my daughter would be so envious! She's the only 12-year-old I know who prefers soft shell crabs to ANYTHING else on the menu. We can't afford to eat out often, but when we do, I always let her order them.
