crown mouldings and baseboard: to pain or not to paint?

We recently bought a 90-year-old house with a beautiful staircase, crown mouldings, baseboards..all original wood. We are renovating the kitchen and have decided on distressed white cabinetry and a dark island. Many things to consider in terms of "flow" on the main floor..and I am thinking that the mouldings need to be painted white.

On the second floor, the mouldings and baseboards are all painted white. I like the crisp feel of it. But I feel like I'd be messing with the original charm that I love downstairs. What are your thoughts?
