I still agree with our traffic act ... that it's a privilege ... to drive on the public highway. Any person has a right, wearing a seat belt or not, to drive any vehicle, licensed or not, passed mechanical/emissions test or not, on private property ... but only if s/he owns it. Or has the owner's permission ... which makes that situation a "privilege" that must be granted, doesn't it? How would you like to have me tell you that I have a right to drive my car on your driveway? farm? In our area, a youth can only drive on the public road initially if s/he can pass a test showing that s/he knows many of the traffic laws ... and only if accompanied by a licensed driver, for some time, until s/he has proved her/his capacity to operate a vehicle within appropriate parameters (which until that time does not include driving on an expressway, or driving between midnight and 5 a.m., or with more than one other youth in the car, or with any trace whatever of alchol on his/her breath) at which time s/he is granted an unrestricted licence (except can't have more than 0.08% of alcohol on his/her breath). And if s/he transgresses those parameters, the privilege will be withdrawn ... for a period. In fact, I don't have a right to drive any vehicle on the highway, as is. When I purchase a vehicle, it must pass certain mechanical tests and limited emission tests before the government allows me to put a licence plate on it, and if I am caught driving it on a public road without a licence plate, I have some serious consequences to face, regardless of whether I possess a driving licence. Actually, if I don't pay a fee before my birthday next year, the "right", "privilege" or whatever we choose to call it, will expire, and if I put it on the road the next day, there'll be consequences that I won't like (if I'm caught by certain designated persons policing the rules). Plus, every couple of years, it must re-pass an emissions test and if it doesn't, they won't accept my fee in order for me to continue to exercise my "right" ... "privilege" ... whatever ... to continue to operate it on the public roads (but I can operate it on my own farm, even if it doesn't pass the emissions test). If it's been through an accident and an evaluator assesses that it has suffered structural, rather than merely cosmetic damage, I will not be allowed the "right" ... "privilege" to continue to have a licence on it. But this issue is beside the point ... my suggestion here was that everyone choose to make a distinct effort to re-evaluate and most likely upgrade their driving knowledge and skills. Probably we upgrade our computers oftener than re-evaluate/upgrade our driving skills. But the choice not to re-evaluate/upgrade our computer will hardly ever be responsible for someone's death or serious injury, whether that of others or our own. ole joyful

I wish more people had your dad's philosophy. These days it seems the common saying is you mess up - you cover it up! I can't understand what's the big problem with saying "I goofed" and then accept the consequences. Usually it's not that big a deal. Learn from your mistakes and move on. I've learned a *lot* in my life! And yes, a chunk of 4x2 can be handy. You have a baseball bat, a weapon, a shelf, and more. Funny you mention that Dotmom, I do the same thing. It really irritates me to see people decide against getting something and just leave it anywhere. Put it back! The bigger stores around here have people go around with carts just to pick up that stuff. They'll leave packages of meat, frozen items, and of course you'll find opened and emptied packages of most anything tucked in the back of a shelf. Makes you want to scream.

The ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) ( but ... they're coffee drinkers) group meeting on Thursday was the day that they celebrated the January birthdays, and one of the twenty or so has his on the same day as mine.

All three of us got a cupcake with candle, and when, after the song, each got to blow his candle out ...

... this old smart-a$$ decided to hold his at arm's length, to see whether he could accomplish the feat.

It should have been hilarious, whichever result applied ...

... and he succeeded in blowing the darned thing out!

So, of course, some teasing ensued! "Blow-hard" ... "hot air", etc.

They've had a local library closed for some upgrades for a couple of weeks, so at the party for the reopening yesterday, the librarian gave me a cupcake to celebrate and regretted that she didn't have a candle: it's sitting on the dash of the car, and I figure to take it to son's place shortly.

I wore my "Don't forget my SENIOR DISCOUNT" ball cap to the churches today, part of the boodle when daughter flew me to AZ for my 80th, a couple of years ago, and there was some hilarity over that.

Lady minister at the second church said that she'd heard that it was my birthday and gave me a hug ... had they heard of it earlier in coffee hour, no doubt there'd have been singing.

Did some shopping, I'm here on the computer, and going to son's for dinner shortly.

Should be fun.

As for gifts - what 80-year-old needs more STUFF!

Time to cut down.

I have a nice pair of pants that I've seldom worn, but am wearing today, named "Sans-a-belt" ... and for those of you who don't know French, "sans" is "without".

Trouble is, they are a bit past their prime, and (get ready for it!) the elastic part of the top area of the pants has lost some of its prime ... or "zip" ... or whatever you call it, without stretching the truth too much.

So ... now I have to either find a way to use a belt on the darned things (without loops - seems to me that the designers were "loopy") ...

or get suspenders (hopefully, colourful ones) ...

... or eat more, that I can encourage to go to waist!

Or give them to Good Will?

Life do have its problems, don't it?

Hope it's not too late for me to wish you a Happy Birthday, too. Heck, 80 isn't old--not to me, anyway. My DH was 80 last September and I'm only a couple of years behind. Hopefully, you, Oldjoyful, and we, too, will keep going strong for a few more years! :>)

Took the cupcake to son's place.

His lady had forgotten about it, or would have made a cake ... but when she heard of it ... made one.

So ... the cupcake came home - intact.

Ham, pineapple and mango for dinner ... yummm!

And ... it appears that I may be getting my computer back, fairly soon.

Had a discussion with a nearby guy who does a lot of investing the other day - he uses satellite for internet.

Maybe I'll have to spring for that.

As we used to kid old uncle ..." you can't take it with you".

Surprising result of my birthday commentary here ... scarcely any mention of the failing elastic in the nice pants!

Maybe they just don't want to encourage me.

Hi cynner,

Like I said ... I traded in one or two of the worst ones ... but the rest still had some good times left, so I was hanging on to them ...

... and got the others from Christmas '09 at Christmas '10 (the first one - when daughter was with us).

As I said ... I guess that I outwaited them.

Got some socks, this Christmas ... and winter woolies. Which I'm using: it's rather cold, around here.

Not looking forward to tomorrow: if the weather's too un-nice ...

... I'll probably look out the window ...

... and opine as how I didn't want to go out today, anyway.

One of the privileges of retirement, that.

A friend provided me with suspenders for the pants!

Wide, red ones - guess that I'll have to become opinionated, like Larry King?

I still have quite a few of the briefs - handy to wear in winter, several in sequence, letting them air out in between.

And now that it's spring, can wash 'em all and hang 'em out on the line.

Actually, wash occasionally in winter, hanging them on lines in the basement ...

... or, rarely, throw 'em in the dryer.

Do dryers get old and tired from disuse (do they wear out faster, that is)?

Joyful, old buddy, I can't believe someone hasn't done an underwear intervention on you yet! Any volunteers? We'll meet there, tie him to a chair and burn those bloomers! I was going to say in a campfire but would have to have a lot of wood because it doesn't sound like there's much left to burn! :)
