How do I know if I need a slide in range vs freestanding

We bought a new house with an electric range that I just cannot stand. For Christmas, hubby had a gas line run for me. It comes in through the wall, not up through the floor. Now to begin the long process of selecting a new gas range. I had just assumed I would need a free-standing range because that's what this electric is. Then I was reading on another post here that someone thought they would be able to use a free-standing range but are unable to because of a sealed back. Now I'm completely confused. When I pull the electric oven out, the cabinets aren't open to the range area. (I hope that makes sense.) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
