Making Picnic Plans :-)

Hi everyone,

So, my friends and I are finally going to have our picnic sometime this month. The friend and her husband who are hosting us (well, where we'll be meeting at), is supposed to call me in a few days to work out the schedule of things to do. The menu is all planned and I've even started a shopping list for the things we'll need lol.

Stains are undergoing a lot of changes. At 1 time Behr No. 4 was perfect for me. I put on the Redwood naturaltone on redwood fence posts, went on OK then went to next 1 post & looked back & other 1 looked like kid had scribbled on it all over, changed to different type brush twice including a foam brush. Then I took it back to the store. Got some McKloskey's stain at WalMart, it is a pretty reddish color, goes on well & looks nice & it's been a month since I did bench & potting table. But I don't think recoating it is going to be so easy. It has a bit of a rubber-like feel to it. May just goo up my electric sander.It also is not really a stain as it coats the items completely so all you see is the "stain" so just like a paint but supposed to be so could walk on it on deck. So I saw they had another redwood stain much cheaper at Wal Mart so I tried it. DB(dear bro.) was visiting & since 3 extensions on my fence were rotting he replaced with redwood. This stain is very thin goes on easy & is too red for my taste, I wanted a nice rustic brownish-red color. I had spent a lot of time over on the deck & porch forum before I bought any of this & stuff they liked the best was like $80 a gallon & nobody in Los Angles area has it!! Because of changing regulations they are not using oil based paint to speak of tho the Behr was oil based. They are removing pov or something like that & lead, so we no longer have good paints. I've painting around my home in & out for 40 yrs so you sand & I round the corners a bit so kids & old folks don't hit a sharp corner, not a lot but just enough so it has a little worn down look. Pine is pretty soft so don't think you need to bang it up, it will get that way with use. If I were going to do a pine table I think I would give it a coat of Kilz oil base & pick out a bright color of water based paint for top coat & give it 2 coats of that at least. The oil base will help keep moisture out of boards & I would do this before I put it together covering all sides & ends of boards. Put on 1 coat of finish then assemble & do 1 or 2 more coats giving it 1 drying day between each step. My old redwood set that I did that way & stained for yrs was given to DD & she painted it white & used it in kitchen as newlywed. She later gave it to other relatives & it is still being used.It was bought in 1966.So properly done they can last a very long time. But I realize boards aren't even as thick as they used to be so even more important to take the time to make it last. I can't get any pics on without my DD coming to give me another lesson- sorry! A cold buffet item which is a long time favorite of mine is Vegetables a la Grecque. I've always followed James Beard's method: VEGETABLES A LA GRECQUE "As the vegetables are eaten cold, rather than hot, they can be made in quantity and kept in the refrigerator in containers, to be brought out when you want a simple first course or cold vegetables for a summer buffet. Serve the different vegetables in the small serving dishes called raviers, or in flat pottery or glass dishes. A sprinkling of chopped fresh parsley or, if you like the flavor, chopped fresh coriander, makes a pleasant garnish." * Court bouillon: 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/3 cup white wine vinegar 1/3 cup dry white wine or vermouth 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 bay leaf 1 or 2 cloves garlic, peeled Dash of hot pepper sauce 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme, tarragon, oregano, basil; or 1 teaspoon each dried * Select from the following vegetables: young, tender green beans, wax beans, whole green onions or tiny white onions, small and firm mushroom caps, whole or halved leeks, halved or quartered fennel bulbs, fingers or cubes of eggplant, small and firm zucchini halved or thickly sliced, halved celery hearts, buds of broccoli or cauliflower, tiny young carrots, tiny pattypan squash, artichoke bottoms, or trimmed and quartered artichokes with choke removed (see note). * Put the oil, vinegar, wine, salt, pepper, bay leaf, garlic, hot pepper sauce, thyme, tarragon, oregano and basil in a large, shallow pan or deep skillet, then add a cleaned, trimmed vegetable and just enough water barely to cover. The court bouillon is sufficient for 1 pound of green beans or carrots, or 1 large eggplant, cubed, or 8 artichoke bottoms or a dozen mushroom caps. * Bring the liquid to a boil very slowly over medium heat, then reduce the heat and poach until the vegetable is just crisply tender when pierced with a fork or the point of a small sharp knife. Do not overcook. * Remove from the heat, taste the liquid for seasoning and add salt, if needed; then let the vegetable cool in the liquid. When cool, transfer to a refrigerator container or serving dish. Strain the poaching liquid and use again for other vegetables. If necessary, add more water. * Note: Do not simmer vegetables together, as they will have different cooking times. Cook your selections separately. One other tip: When using the hole saw, do the following: 1) Carefully drill a small diameter hole all the way through the table top (do your best to make this perfectly vertical). This will act as a guide for the center bit in the hole saw. 2) When you drill with the hole saw, only go half way through the table, then flip the table over and finish drilling from the bottom side. This gives a much cleaner result.

I will keep everyone posted about the picnic plans. I have to call the one friend who is joining us tonight. Just to refresh your memories, here is the menu I have written down.

Gram's Lemonade
Alabama BBQ Ribs
Twice Baked Potatoes
Veggies & Dip
Buffalo Chicken Dip & Tortilla Chips (the veggies can be dipped in this too I figured lol)
Peanut Butter & Chocolate Rice Krispie Bars

We may make some modifications or additions to the menu. The sauce for the ribs sounds a little sweet, so I may add some of the wing sauce for the buffalo chicken dip for a little spice, but not too much since I and another friend don't like overly spicy foods. I cannot wait until my friends and I get together! Rain or shine, it'll be a very fun day :-).

All recipes have now been written down. I might have to take some cards with me in case anyone wants the recipes of the menu items.

Ok, it is getting much warmer, now you have to make a lot more Gram's Lemonade.

dcarch, That won't be a problem lol. If it's a warm day, I think 3 gallons of the lemonade will go fast ;-).

I agree, you'll want LOTS of your Gram's lemonade. Everything sounds delicious and I know you've been looking forward to this.

I get to start making more official plans tomorrow when my friend (who, along with her husband, are hosting us), calls me and we figure out a schedule for the big day :-). I'll let everyone know how tomorrow goes!

Just talked to the friend who is hosting us. Our plans are more concrete, but, still no official date for the picnic. That is, until she figures out what days she has to work. Keeping my fingers crossed!

I'll try and remember to take pictures, for sure! LOL dcarch, I'm thankful our friend who is hosting us lives out in the country, but I think our picnic may be moved to the end of the month. Some plans came up for my one friend and she may not be able to make it.

Well, it looks like the picnic is to be rescheduled yet again. This time for next month. I do have my 5 year class reunion coming up, and we'll be bringing covered dishes for that event. Hmm, I think I'll make a dessert or two to share, and make Gram's Lemonade as well.
