Silver Queens, are you up for some more pics?
Comments (11)I'm not an expert on sugar nips - my only claim to fame is that I owned one made by Kirk in the 1850's & it was a scissor-type but I think the working end was different. currently, I own a pair of grape shears but they look like a normal pair of scissors with fancy handles. I'd say that the use depends on which job it is more suited. Is it sharp enough to cut a grape stem or strong enough to grip & break off a chunk of hard sugar? I can't tell from the photo, so Alisande, it's up to you to cut up produce & report back! Linda, there are several patterns with a cupid, but a K in a circle with a rampart Lion is usually the mark of Knowles & I don't know of any patented pattern that they made like that. Nothing comes to mind about a K & an anchor. Post a picture & I'll do my best, but a lot of demi's were made for souveniers(sp?) & gift sets & weren't part of a full pattern. Comments (30)Speaking of lying in a casket with "all the good stuff" piled around you....one of my favorite possessions is an old concrete water trough that my husband moved here for me from our old place, which had been a dairy. Not exactly an easy feat, mind you. It is just over 10' long and 3 1/2' wide and has 8" thick sides. I love that old trough...was poured with boards for a mold and you can see the faint outline of the wood grain in it, and whoever did it, did a great job and beveled the edge. It is poured with finely crushed oyster shell and green moss grows on it. I go out and lovingly stroke it and splash water onto the moss. Of all my junk, I think I love it the most. I had told my husband I didn't want to be buried when I died...unless I could be buried here on the place. I'm just too "queer", as my mother said about me, to go in a cemetary with all those other people...so I told him, put me in the trough and then pour a layer of concrete over me, and put the waterlilies and water back in. A second idea...put me in the trough, and pile in as much of my old junk as you can, and pour in concrete. Top off with my hundreds of old marbles. What a lovely tomb that would be! :))...See MoreIs there a NICE way to inform Xmas guests who R scratching china?
Comments (89)There are different kinds of stoneware. The high fired kind never ever scratches. The kind common in less expensive dishes does. There's less variation in porcelain, but in less expensive dishes you can still get scratches. I don't care. :) I bought service for two dozen of cheap dreck but pretty porcelain (under $100 on closeout) for company. I think there's probably a scratch or two. People don't see them when there's food on the plate! They just see the beautiful table and ooh and ahh. I filled in with a couple of sets for eight of a complementary pattern that do seem to have a harder glaze...and cost almost twice as much :) With place settings for forty, I've never had to resort to kitchen dishes. :) I love lovely things, but I don't worry about my company dishes. If someone gets the table cloth caught in his belt and crashes the whole thing, it's making sure people aren't cut, and then seeing if the food was spared that are the issues, not the tableware. :) Not that it's happened. Not that the toddlers haven't had their chances at it. No chips or breaks so far (and ward off the evil eye!). Lots of peace of mind. Who needs more stress? If it's only enough company to fit the dining room table, I set finer dishes. They're not better looking, though, just better quality. :)...See MoreIs a silver tea service good for anything?
Comments (64)I also decorate with mine, keeping it all together in the kitchen~a large rectangular tray is over my cooktop, on the right side is another tray(round)leaning against the backsplash. A SS water pitcher holds old SS utincils. In front of that is a small lamp made out of an old SS sugar bowl. I also made a paper towel holder out of a candleabra which sits next to the pitcher. On the other side of the cooktop is a long narrow SS tray holding a crystal sugar bowl and creamer, crystal salt/pepper shakers, and toothpick holder. For years I kept my 'stuff' in a box, but 4 years ago when I mover into the new house, decided I didn't want to be a collector of stuff, but a 'user' of things I love. ;o)...See Moredreamgoddess
