GK5040 - I've been thinking of getting one similar to yours to go in my foyer. When you are looking at it from upstairs are the candle bulbs at about eye level? Judigal - It seems to me that if you were going to do one with glass shades that shades facing downward would be easier to keep clean. Of course the glass would get dusty anyway, so maybe not. I'm a terrible house keeper, so I always go the low maintenance route.

Double check the requirement. A 40 watt equivalent is not the same as a 40 watt incandescent, so you should be able to use much brighter bulbs with more lumens (at a much cooler temp and with less wattage) You will definitely be able to use much brighter leds. We have the equivalent of 3 100 watt leds in our dining light and it is BRIGHT at full. I did have to replace our existing dimmer with an led compatible dimmer (ended up using Lutron Caseta). Just be aware that different brands of LEDs, even when they are listed as warm may have a slightly different quality and hue of light when dim. I forget what brand I bought but it was whatever was at Lowes and seems a slightly greenish when dim, but that may also be a factor of the glass shade. I may eventually try the Phillips ones that dim to a warmer more yellow hue.

I started off agreeing with the idea of deciding on your table first because it will set the tone for everything else --- but I think hand in hand with that would be deciding on a new fireplace/mantel treatment. That mantel isn't working with anything. Changing it out might help the otherr things seem less at conflict becauase they will have one less thing clashing. I keep seeing a simple, but not really rustic, beam type of mantel. Also, I'm not big on painting brick, but I would consider a wash on your brick to soften the look -- especially if you want to try to work with the table you have. I'm not sure if the table there now is round or round that extends to oval. I'm also not sure if you want a new table or need something larger if it doesn't extend. If size is an issue I'd wait until you get the fridge moved to decide how much larger you might go. Consider too whether you want a buffet, sideboard, console or something on that back wall. The kitchen is separated enough that it might be nice to have a place to set down additional serving dishes or set up a serving area when entertaining. If the table works for you in terms of seating, size, comfort and versatility, I don't find anything wrong with the style. It is casual, but traditional. Your cabinets are traditional/transitional with simple details. What is a bit jarring is the color that is so much darker. The table and chairs look like they may be all wood and something you could refinish, but you may not need to. You have two rooms you want to work together, but you have a huge divide between them. You need to visually connect the two rooms that are divded by a stairwell/hall space on one side and the doorway and window on the other. Simple things like matching or coordinating rugs in the kitchen and under the table could help create some flow between the two spaces.in the kitchen and on the DR wndow will help you see them as connected spaces. You migth also consider a bench under the window. It could be a handy spot to take off and stash shoes from the back yard, a storage bench for other items or a simple bench that can be pulled up to the table for extra seating. Fabric cushions or pillows on the bench, chair cushions could carry your colors and flow too. You may not need window treatments, but using a repetition or valances or shades. You don't need to do everything, but some. That's a rough start -- some things to think about.

I wish it was in my budget, but it's just not. Do you think round is best for my space? I found a few on Pottery Barn that I like (though the prices seem a little high. Maybe ok with a sale.)
