2 New kitchen Tips

Have not had any new Kitchen Tips for a while.

This was emailed to me.

Thought I would pass it on, in case someone would like to use it.

USE OF BOTTLE NECKS TO SEAL PLASTIC BAGS.

( when there is no funnel handy )

You can use this idea, instead of twist ties or rubber bands.

It is waterproof and air tight.

Cut off the top of a Plastic bottle , a little below the neck ( approx. 1 1/2" )

Remove the cap and feed the plastic bag thru the neck from the bottom.

Pull the bag all the way thru, to the food and wrap it down over the neck.

Screw the cap on and cut off the excess plastic bag.

Here is one I knew for years but forgot to put it in the last episode of Kitchen Tips.

TO POUR LIQUID INTO A SMALL BOTTLE OR SPACE

Place something thin across the bottle you are pouring from.

Extending it out a few inches. I used a thick Skewer.

Pour slowly, with the tip of the Skewer in the opening, that you are pouring into.

The liquid will follow the Skewer down into the small bottle.

I have used this for pouring Motor Oil, etc.

I've used water bottle tops as bag closures. They work the best on thin bags such as Bulk Barn, etc.

Sprinkle a bit of flour on your bacon when it's frying, and it won't spatter.

Thanks for that list Elizpiz, that's what I was looking for!! I think this will help. I'm amazed at the planning that Buehl did to reload her kitchen! Redroze- I do remember how long it took for you to get those last minute details, you were so patient. Can't wait for your finished kitchen post! charlikin- I'm not sure if I posted on your Finished kitchen, but it looks amazing!! I had considered your countertop much earlier in my process, and I think it turned out beautiful. I just moved from NYC to NJ a couple years ago, so I can relate to the galley kitchen. I do remember how efficient it was, and I actually had some great storage space. Where are you in the city? I was an UES gal....DH is a chef at the W hotel Times Square. You made me laugh about your carpenter looking at you like your crazy. Happens to me all the time when I bring something I learned on GW up to the electrician, plumber, granite guy etc. Feeling much better this morning, I'll print out that list and start getting organized. When I am feeling let down about a decision I made, I have to kick myself and remember how lucky I am to have a brand new kitchen. Wait till you see my before shot of it!

I have a small galley kitchen (well, modified galley; there's a door in one long wall). I have divided my kitchen into the "baking" side and the "cooking" side. The baking side is AWAY from the stove, where the KitchenAid mixer is. I keep all the flour, sugar, cocoa, etc., there. And I keep a complete set (for me, that's TWO sets) of measuring spoons and dry measuring cups, plus spatulas and a whisk, on that end. On the "cooking" end, I keep another single set of measuring spoons and dry measuring cups; a couple of spatulas, and a whisk, plus the knives, grater, etc. The only things, almost, that go back and forth are the glass measuring cups. I keep two 1-cups and two 2-cups, bcs it's actually not unheard of for me to need to measure two completely different things. I keep them on the cooking end, bcs they're used most there, but not at the FAR end, so it's not so many steps to get one if I need to measure 1/2 cup of milk or something. If I had a big kitchen, I'd have several areas (it would be OK for their counterspace to overlap if they are not typically done at the same time--nobody's making lunch while I'm baking) : baking--away from most of the traffic, and not necessarily near the oven itself, but w/ decent counterspace for rolling out dough and laying the cookie sheets--though I quite happily borrow the "cooking" counter area for that. cooking--or "prep," w/ storage for my good cutting board, the knives, etc. making lunches--near the fridge, and w/ big cabinets nearby to stash the juice boxes, and counterspace under the peanut butter. kids making breakfast--not necessarily near the fridge, but w/ the bowls and spoons and cereal boxes near one another. I'd even be willing to buy 2 bowls per person just for breakfast alone in order to store them separately from the other dishes DH making breakfast--he makes toast, so I'd want an area for that, pref. that's not overlapping w/ the kids making breakfast making coffee--probably put this w/ DH's toaster, since that's almost the only time coffee is made, since I don't drink it, but were I someone else, I'd want this on an edge of the kitchen, so that company could make it, or get themselves a pot, without having to enter the kitchen proper. Gadgets: tray dividers: buy two sets and space these closely--no air gaps between items, or it's too hard to wrestle the cookie sheets out from between. I put mine in the deep cabinet over the fridge; I used to have them under the sink. drawer dividers: buy these clips, and 1/4-inch-thick wood, either plywood from the lumber store tha tyou cut yourself, or perhaps precut strips from a crafting-supply place like Midwest Products.

seasiderooftop I have Princess Anne as 5th-year own root, it's very tough with thick cane, and bloom best with chicken manure, it's in only 4 hours of morning sun: @joeywyomingzone4 I read your post on rooting roses with band-size containers with a mixture of pea pebbles, charcoal bits, and chopped up banana skins. Thank you for that fantastic tip. @rosecanadian Growing small own-root roses in the pot is so much easier than grafted. Plus own-root roses last longer. Evelyn roots VERY EASY here and yearly I throw away Evelyn rootings, which I wish I could send to you. I sent out rootings with zero soil & dunked in water before sending out, and they bloom well for a friend in Texas. Below is bloom on an Evelyn rooting I did. I kept it in partial shade thus the bee-leaf-cutter damage.

Another way to minimize splattering when deep frying is to sprinkle some salt into the hot oil.

This one was new to me and sounded pretty simple. When cooking pasta, toss a couple of peeled garlic cloves in the pot with the water. When you drain the pasta, fish the cloves out, crush them into a paste and mix with a little bit of butter a garlic spread.

I always enjoy Lou's tips. It's about time you gave us some more!

You can rig a leaf blower with a net bag and blow insects off row crops into the bag for easy sorting!

fori - you can also use a cordless vacuum to suck up those critters, or a really long extension cord on a shop vac.

Hey guys, stay on topic please. :-)

I posted this one in another gardening forum sometime ago. Those of you who grow herbs and veggies know those nasty white flies and aphids. Yet you can't spray chemicals on food stuff. The use of a vacuum or a blower's vacuum side to suck up those critters is one of the recommended ways to keep them under control. The problem is, as you have found out, you also suck in all your veggies.

Here is a simple attachment to solve the problem.

But if you need to keep the insects, a net is better. You have to sort them before they get mashed.

My Tip.....You know those "Garlic Nets" you get, when you buy a three pack of Garlic, well I save them, and use them to squeeze fresh lemons. They work Fantastic, and last forever. If I have company, and I'm serving Salmon, I tie a nice yellow satin bow around them, with half a lemon, and I do several, and place them in a bowl. It looks nice. Just wash the nets with soap & water after each use.
