Cabinet above stacked w/d, proper clearance (not in closet)?

I have an old house with my duets side by side in the kitchen. There are currently two over the fridge type cabinets (only 12 in deep) above them.

I'd like to stack them so I can put my fridge next to the units. The manual shows the stacked units need 6 inches of clearance above IN A CLOSET, but mine won't be in a closet. They'll have a good 4-5 inches of space in the back/sides from the walls and fridge though.

My issue is the cabinets. I'd like to just move them up to the ceiling so I can still use them. I have plenty of clearance above the fridge for circulation, but it will only give me 2 inches above the stacked w/d. Do you think this is still safe for venting and stuff? Or do I really need the entire 6 inches, regardless of them being in or out of a closet?
