3D CAD drawings

Just a quick question: should I assume most kitchen remodellers have the capability of providing me with 3D cad drawings? I really need to have something like this to see the finished space. Is this common or rare?

Never assume... ;-) If you find someone whose work you like who doesn't have this capability, you can get software for yourself that can do 3D views. I completely understand the value of 3D for seeing the whole picture of the plan, but I'm not sure I'd want to eliminate a quality craftsman or company because of their lack of this particular technology. I think all you can do is ask.

Some of the smaller, custom kitchen shops don't really mess with the CAD drawings because it takes up too much time. Those shops that order from cabinet companies almost all have someone that is able to do a layout. Now, not all programs can do 3D either. From experience, it's not necessary to use CAD, but if you have a hard time 'seeing' a finished project in your mind's eye, then go to someone that does the drawings. Insist on it.

You could also use 3D Home Architect Deluxe program by Broderbund, version 4.0 is my favorite version, to do a layout. It's intuitive and easy to learn. I have several versions that all work with XP or Vista.

If you send me a sketch of your layout with dimensions, I will draw it up for you in my spare time. The smaller the job, the better. Email me through GW.

"What the pro builders said: architects design buildings on paper (ie, computer); we build them in the real world." You would think from your comment that the hands-on aspect of building in the real world would give a builder enough knowledge to avoid mistakes. I have not found this to be true. I find that because many builders have only learned on-the-job from other builders who learned the same way, bad construction practices can be perpetuated for decades. In my experience, where most builders have the most trouble is in lateral structural bracing, moisture control, and structural connections. Sixty to one hundred years ago, when most of the basic residential construction principles were established, materials were cheap, homes were over structured, and moisture control was simple: just kept he water running downward. Today's construction materials are fabricated to minimize material and labor costs and provide a much higher level of moisture and thermal performance. Were does a builder go to learn about these materials and how to put them together? Unfortunately, most information is available only from the manufacturers who often issue it in the form of thinly disguised advertising brochures. Only a hand full of highly experienced consulting engineers actually have a good handle on how these materials are best assembled and some of them are willing to share on the internet. Some builders pay attention to this kind information but I find that most do not. Today, to suggest that a builder is better positioned to understand the principles of good construction is simply not true. The simple fact of the matter is that few builders, architects, or manufacturers have the level of knowledge they really need to be effective. It is such a mess that I have begun to look forward to retirement so I don't have to deal with it anymore.

What this discussion is really about is not drawing by hand or using a computer, it's really about what work is being done, what sort of "service" a client is getting and, most importantly, what the final result or outcome will be. Builders and designers may often work based on existing designs that they have built and are already fully resolved and stored in the computer. When a new client comes along, one of the existing computer files is called up and "reheated" or tweaked to meet the new client's wish list. When clients go to a builder/designer who charges $1/SF for services, this may be what is happening. Plus the builder/designer simply transfers any additional costs to the construction budget, where the client never sees them. For many consumers, this approach fits them perfectly. They don't want a custom designed home. All they want is an existing home that's tweaked to include their list of features. Think about what's going on: could any adult make a living, pay business expenses and reinvest in growing their business on $1/SF (or less)? How many 3,000 SF houses would such a builder need to do for annual income sufficient to stay in business and make a living for his family? That's why construction costs, and extra costs due to low allowances, provide most of the needed business income for builders and in-house designers. In this business model, the minimal "design" fees are simply a way to get people to sign a construction contract. In other words, what's being done may by cooking a previously existing floor plan until "complete", with little or no corresponding thought or work on site planning, climate and green design, and almost no thought to exterior massing and design. When the floor plan is sufficiently baked, the rest of the project is like icing a new cake. The exterior decoration is simply applied and handed to the client. This sort of incomplete thinking about design is why we see so many postings here on this forum of "fat" house plans, and corresponding ill-proportioned, roof-heavy exteriors, with a pretty "street face" and vanilla sides and backs. It's why so many designs are a miss-mash of stacked gable roofs and patch-work quilt wall materials--all decoration and no substance! All of the effort went into tweaking a plan and little or no corresponding work took place elsewhere. Architects work differently. They organize their work and fees by phases, working from very open-ended studies and explorations for a custom design, to a highly detailed set of drawings and specifications for bidding and construction. These phases of work are clearly defined and derived from a historical understanding of how building design proceeds in a step by step process, from initial ideas to final details, where insides, outsides, site, codes, energy, etc., are all considered together throughout the design process. The five typical phases for designing a project are: schematic design, design development, construction drawings and specifications, bidding and construction. One phase does not begin until the client has approved the work from the prior phase. These phases are why many architects may start a project using pencil, pen and tracing paper as they meet and discuss ideas, explore site opportunities, develop energy and green strategies, finally pulling everything together in a holistic schematic design. Thereafter, with the design direction identified, a computer may be used effectively to refine and add greater precision and detail, until the work is complete. It's not impossible to use computers for schematic design, but it is more difficult to sit in a meeting with clients, talk about needs and opportunities while punching information into a computer. It's a lot more effective to sit with clients and "doodle" with pencil and paper where everyone can see what their ideas may actually look like. The costs for this type of work is usually set by the architect as either a fixed fee (with conditions on what the fixed fee covers so that the work doesn't ramble on endlessly) or a percentage of the construction cost, or some combination, depending on circumstances. The important point for consumers to understand is that architect's fees are based on the quality and amount of original work by an architect, while SF costs may be based on minimal changes to an existing project, with possible hidden costs rolled into the construction budget. The issue is really not about how the work is performed--by hand or computer--it's really about what work is performed (or not performed) for a client, and what will be the end result: something custom and original or something reheated. Sorry about the long message, but it's important to point out that there's nothing wrong with either custom or reheated designs as long as the consumer understands what they are getting for what they are paying.

Because we were living in CA and remodeling in FL, we couldn't use a local custom guy, nor did we find what we wanted in the traditional cabinet companies (30" deep lower cabs with 27" Blum soft-close). And the Kitchens forum led us to Scherrs and we couldn't be happier. After reading all the nightmares on this forum, one of the best things about them is that they did all that KD stuff to ensure that cabinets wouldn't bang together and that the refrigerator doors would open all the way - in other words, they calculated all the spacing and fillers and stuff like that. We just sent them the overall layout, specs for each cabinet, and model numbers of the appliances we had chosen. They came back to us with beautiful 3D CAD drawings and super detailed instructions to put everything together. We did get the mixed-hardwood drawer boxes complete (it's an option to put them together yourself, but as I recall, it only saves you a few bucks and not worth the aggravation as I have no idea how to put dovetail pieces together). Even with shipping from ND to FL, it would have cost us twice as much to get the customized Omega cabinets, for example. I've been thinking about these guys because they were so great to work with and if you saw the national news last night, Minot is being evacuated for flooding. Moving kitchens is an expensive undertaking maybe post the 2 D floor plan here to see if you get some help before spending the money on a 3D. I find for most people 3D software is just frustrating. You will at some point need an architect so maybe that would be the best .

My bro is a builder and uses AutoCAD. He bought a new laptop that didn't have the program and started messing with Google's SketchUp. He canot believe how much power this program has and it's FREE.

The one I use is an older Sierra product (I think it's Sierra Home Architect, or something similar) that i picked up as "shovelware" in the bargain bin at Best Buy a couple of years ago. I LOVE it. It's not perfect, but it does a decent approximation of layout (including measurements), has a reasonable library of furniture, cabinetry and the things most people have in their homes, and the 3d colour renderings are sufficient to give you a VERY good idea of what something will look like in real life.

I paid $10 for it on a whim and I swear that program is the reason our entire project HAPPENED, because without it I would have been clueless. I've been playing "what if" with walls and kitchens ever since, and it enabled us to do the job the way WE wanted by showing our buildesr exactly what that was. A picture is definitely worth 1000 words in this game!

Warning, do not purchase 3D Home Architect version 5.0

For years 3D Home Architect was made for Broderbund by the company that makes the professional design program Cheif Architect. The program received glowing reviews based on its ease of use. For some reason (probably money) Broderbund decided to go with a completely different company to develop version 5.0 I purchased version 5.0 based on the reviews I had read for earlier versions and was seriously disappointed.

It was slow, difficult to use (and I'm a computer programmer by trade), and would crash frequently. Also there are certain relatively basic features that it just can't handle. Cathedral ceilings? Too bad. Windows above other windows? Too bad. Unusual roof line? Too bad.

The worst of it for me was that my main reasonfor purchasing it was to visualize different configurations for the new kitchen and different color schemes and materials. Well for the most part the program only displays a wireframe version of the 3D design. It does allow you to "Render" a full color 3D version of the design, but takes 5 to 10 seconds to draw the image (when I know that the hardware ought to be able to render the entire design 60 times each second.) and the image it produces is so cartoonishly textured that you can forget any sort of subtle tweaks to evaluate the looks created by different woods or different materials.

Please do yourself a favor and do no buy 3D Home Architect version 5.0

Thanks for the tips.

I've tried google sketch up and for the life of me I cannot get this to work. I tried for about 30 minutes and gave it up. My husband bought a copy of Floor Planner Version 8 from BB for about $5 (I think the software is now on version 11) and i tried it out. Again, it was too hard to use. Simple things like making a diagram of just the floorplan seemed too complicated. I promise I'm not a stupid person; I am quite handy on the PC, but these programs either crashed or were completely over my head.

I don't know anything about what Broderbund offers, but Chief Architect does the software for Better Homes and Gardens programs. There are different versions. The Home Designer or Interior Designer would probably work for what you want to do. I found Interior Designer at our local library, so you might try checking your library. Then you can try it out and decide if it's something you want to invest in.

I've linked the BH&G selection of design software. To really compare them, click on "Comparison Matrix" from the column on the left. I've seen some available through Amazon, bookstores, office supply stores, etc.

I use Chief Architect and have helped other forum members use the BH&G softwares. It's pretty user friendly, I think.

Actually, I agree with dissing the 3D HA 5.0 version. I only put the link above because I could not find the 4.0 version on Broderbund's web site. I can get 5.0 to work fine, but some of the elements I liked the best were eliminated from the 5.0 version. I have had 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0. And I bought AutoCAD...learned it (enough to know that it was more than I wanted to learn). I still prefer, for a layman, 4.0 version of 3D Architect. I taught my son some basics and he entertained himself all summer with that program. If you can pick up a copy on eBay or somewhere, it's great.

I downloaded SketchUp and I don't have any problem whatsoever. I don't have a project I'm working on right now, but it seems pretty intuitive. Once you have a few of the skills down, then it's pretty easy to use different programs.

I guess the difference between some of these programs would be like going from FrontPage to DreamWeaver CS3.

I downloaded SketchUp. I'm pretty good using a computer, but I think it'll take me while before I'm really fast & comfortable with it.

Those of you who are already using SketchUp, where did you get the appliances & cabinets to insert into the floor plan? Did you draw a refrigertor & rangetop from scratch? Are these built in and available in SketchUp, or did you import them from somewhere else? I couldn't find them among the components.

Do you first draw a 2 dimensional layout, and the use the push tool to build up, or do you jump right in to 3D?

YES!! My question exactly!

I went and downloaded and did ALL the tutorials for SketchUP and while I can make me a luvly house with a deck (lessons 1-3) there aren't any stock cabinets or fridges of any use in the component list. If I now have to make these things forget it....

have you seen the sketchup 3D warehouse?
TONS of models for sketchup to download. everything from landmarks to animals and plants. ikeas cabinets and others are there, as well a s many many appliances. a lot of them you can just push/pull/resize to match you sizes if they are off a bit

Oh great! I was in this warehouse and didn't click collections so all I saw when I searched was other people's kitchens already done. I see major appliance companies are there, too. Ok now I'm more excited to keep going. I'd love to design my own dream kitchen!
