HVAC replacement - dealer quote

After 22 years need to replace furnace and AC unit for our mainfloor. We have about 2350 square feet. Original unit was 2.5 ton. We expanded the first floor adding about 400 square feet in a sun room from the original home configuration. We are planning on remaining in this home for 3-5 years depending on the RE market

Proposed replacement is Trane

Furnace Model XT Model #TUD1BO8OA931B (80% efficiency, 80,000 BTU)

Evaporator coil Model # 4TXCB004CC3HCA

Condensing XR Unit Model # 4TTR5036E1000AA (15 SEER)

Cost for unit with appropriate drain pan, condensate pump, and all connections is $5,665

Optional equipment....

Honeywell programmable thermostat....$425

Humidfier April Aire model 600 by-pass.....525

Any comments on unit or sizing is appreciated. Also..I think price is competitive but would appreciate any thoughts here as well.

first off, your location please.

this is a nice system quoted. qualifies for tax credit.

what size is existing furnace?

what size is main floor, now and after addition?

if you are going up in size of outside condenser, you will need a new and correctly sized refrigerant lineset.

I would want a 4-5" pleated box filter cabinet for furnace.

Main floor size was 1950 sq ft....we added 400 sq.ft with sun room to total 2350
Existing furnace isa Bryant (22 yrs old) approx 60,000BTU
We have a Space Guard filter that will be used on the new furnace.
Quote does include a new lineset
Also included in proposal is a Honeywell programmable thermostat....
Honeywell touchscreen w auto switching between htg and cool would cost $425--not sure it is worth putting extra $$ in this.

Jt Some questions please. What is your location? What size home living area? What size furnace and eff are you replacing? What size AC are you replacing? I would like to know the exact mdl number evap coil for each quote. What thermostat is proposed for the Carrier quote? That is a big difference between the 96% eff Carrier furnace and the 80% eff Trane furnace-both 60 K input. That would be about 56 KBTUs output on the Carrier and about 48 KBTUs on the Trane. Not insignificant. I don't care for some shortcuts that homeowners make particularly on reusing linesets and using existing thermostats that shortchange a nice furnace's operational capability. Thanks for your replies! To answer a few follow up questions: My home is ~1600 sq ft. Not sure of the insulation qualities but the home is 25 years old (we're replacing original furnace) and I've never opened the walls to check insulation. We bought the house 6 years ago. I'm replacing a 75000 BTU Carrier and a 2 ton AC. Contractor suggested that the existing furnace was the right size but the 2-ton AC was a bit undersized so the estimate was for 2.5 ton AC. My location is just outside Chicago IL so we definitely do not have a moderate winter climate. Not sure how to answer where my ductwork is located as most of it is under floors or above enclosed ceilings. Another contractor is coming out today and i'll be sure to get a few different quotes for different options.

Thanks for the response Ryan. I did get 4 quotes in all. SEARS quoted $12000 for Carrier comofrt series 13 SEER 3TON A/C and 90K BTU 2 stage single speed furnace. Another contractor quoted $8000 for Performance series 13 SEER 2.5 TON AC and Infinity series 80K BTU 80% AFUE furnace. No humidifier though. Yet another contractor quoted 7000 for Coleman system. So looking at all the other offers I thought this guy's TRANE estimate was the best. Here is the update on the COIL Model is TE47636CI75B2922 and it says Make is TRANE/ADP. As for the not going with 90% Furnace the reason is new PVC venting that the homeowner association will not allow. So I am staying with 80% . The contractor said I will not miss much by going with 80% as opposed to 90% BTU. He did do the load calculation by measuring the house, windows etc. How much more do you think I am paying for this job? Don't the prices vary by the market. I am sure if I did this in Alabama it would be cheaper than doing here in NY Metro? Once again thanks for the input!

I don't understand the concept of why the low stage can't be used in a dual fuel situation. Let's say is 20 degrees outside and it is more efficient to heat with the gas furnace than the heat pump. The Infinity furnace will use its low stage to try the maintain the set point in the house. It is going to cycle on and off to try to maintain the house at 70 degrees. This is what it does in my house. The Carrier Infinity 58MVB060 has two stages and cost about $200 less than than the three stage 58MVC060. However the 58MVB has a high and low stage, and no middle stage. So in effect you still have a furnace with a low stage. I am not an expert when it comes to installing in an attic. I would be worried about condensation freezing. All I can suggest is you voice the concern to the contractor and have him explain to you how he will deal with it. I suppose he could use an electric heat strip to keep the condensate drain warm, but again I assume he knows what he is doing.

in a climate like atlanta you should really upgrade from straight a/c to a heatpump. It shouldn't cost much to do this. If it does, your getting taxed. Heatpumps are efficient and comfy above freezing. They will add flexibility incase natural gas spikes.

I thought you probably had Ga location.

I like HPs as well. However, I saw some recent rates in Georgia for electric and nat gas and you could not justify upgrading to a HP-that's at this time. gas rates will fluctuate but they are cheaper at the moment. eventually they will trend upwards as the economy recovers.

if you want to verify your rates, I will run a comparison for you.

you are probably oversized on the furnace. However, that's typical of Trane because that's the smallest XT furnace that will allow you to qualify for tax credit.

I am not certain why the thermostat would be so expensive. For your quoted system, I would want HW mdl 8321 with humidity sensor.

You have the filter cabinet and the lineset covered. Looks good.

Thanks for the comments. We put a Heat pump unit in our basement when we finished it.....not real pleased with it.
When we get colder weather...below 35 or so, need to use the heat strips. It does get cold enough here during Dec - Feb that we would need to use consistently.
Also as noted our Electrical rates tend to be a bit higher here. I normally lock gas rates for a year...depending on rates & outlook

how long ago was that? Heatpumps have improved (more quiet, efficient, reliable, demand-defrost, etc).

My 1 year old heat pump does pretty well.
It was exactly 35 degrees all last nite. My heatpump was running slightly less than half the time to maintain 68 in the house. I actually tested register temp once too - it was between 87 and 90.

If you have a badly insulated or leaky house that should be addressed. Heatpumps don't do well with that.
