Kinda finished kitchen - except for windows

I was the real smart person who started ripping off tile right before entertaining alot for the holidays:) Here is what we came up with for a solution. We covered the gaping hole with beadboard painted the wall color. I had the copper wall hanging - it is very convenient to put papers in there to deal with until later. The rooster painting was done by a friend of my DH's & I think it is fun. I also tore off tile by the coffee maker & had the drywall patched. For those of you that don't know......mistake made with my backsplash so I was trying to minimize the appearance of my backsplash.

Finally got my benches for the table & chair cushions done in the pheasant fabric.

So now my final thing to do in here is windows. French doors by fireplace & 2 windows by kitchen table. Old pic but shows the windows (from my lamp mania days :)

Options in my heads are:

1. Currently have cellulars on windows now.....use pheasant fabric as valance of some sort to cover cellular & put cellulars on doors - maybe the cute ones with the knobs like Mimi's

2. woven wood romans

3. roman/london shades out of pheasant fabric - accented with red check fabric

4. plantation shutters to match trim - have to really start saving my mad money!!

I appreciate all the help I have received on this kitchen. I feel like I have gone from here, there & every where in between with this room!! It has been a tough one for me.

Oh, I love this room! Warm and inviting, yet calm and soothing! The beadboard looks fantastic--not like a coverup but rather an intentional way to accent the art! You've got great taste!

Newcastle--Yes, I pay the GC's overhead on everything, including cabs. I'm not sure he'll go for me getting my own. Despite tough economic times and a great first few meetings with him this year, he seems to be getting p!ssy about me sourcing my own materials. Why should I pay all the markup when I'm doing all the work to research and find the materials and can order them cheaper than he can get them? Because then he isn't making his $ and won't do my job. I'm not in a great position to be my own GC at this point with the baby, preschooler, busy DH, no experience, etc. Thanks for more info about your guy. Pug--I still think the right gray would look very chic with your cabs. Let us know what you find!

momorichel, To some people, my fridge might be a little far from my stove but, for me, it is not a problem. I don't mind having to walk two or three extra steps. My kitchen in my last house was so tiny that I am relishing all the space in this one! My aisles are 48" in the "L" so I have plenty of clearance when the fridge door is open for people to get by...the same goes for when my dishwasher is open too. Also, you might be able to see it in the first photo that I posted, my freezer door is actually across from the end of the island and my fridge door actually extends past the end of the island so there is even more than ample room for people to walk by when the door is open. I say, if you have the available space, take advantage of it! Good luck with your new kitchen!

That is a material rarely used well. And it's badly used here. The entrance is terrible. It's better than the New Jersey's ugliest list, but there are a number of the houses on the McMansion blog that would be easier to rehabilitate than this. I don't dislike her interiors from a design standpoint. They're a bit aggressively late 80s/early 90s, but I appreciate many details,even when I don't like them. There is a lot of balance and order in many of her rooms, and many feel somehow organic. I wouldn't want to live in any of them. They're not my style. But her interiors have a lot of good thought. From an aesthetic viewpoint, I appreciate them a lot without liking them. Her exteriors range from fine to just awful. Her own house is a remodel, but it's still a snout garage that somehow still manages to look like a daycare center. I thought her ideas were pretty awesome until I realized she just relabeled the formal living room as the "away room" and that the last thing a main staircase in a family house needs it to shove the family entry together with the main circulation point of the house and guest entry. Yes, two story spaces with no scale and balance are awful--I agree. But so are continuous low ceilings that make you feel like the house is squishing you. Freeoscar, I could NOT figure out how to properly furnish the living room in this house for a long time. Last house was easy, but the traffic patterns in this one kept throwing me off. So I had a third of the room just empty for a while, then full of antiques because for a while it was just about impossible to find furniture that wasn't "overstuffed", and overstuffed can't fit the space properly. I need two sets of shallow furniture to space them against the walls the right way. (Also didn't want to pay a fortune on furniture when there are kids under 7 or so--and their friends. The neighborhood hangs out at my house. I have probably found 5 or more kids who are not mine STANDING on my couches.) Wouldn't have been a problem when the house was built!

Wow, no one would have never known what you had started in the kitchen:) Everything looks great. I am a big fan of the 4 inch plantation shutters, but you are right its a lot of money. A valance to cover the shades would warm up the area. I love the benches!

I'm trying to remember, what color paint did you end up using in the kitchen? Everythings seems to be coming together and looks great. I like the idea of using the pheasant fabric on the window. I can't remember what mimi's look like, but I always love the ones with the knobs.

As probably the only person on earth that hasn't jumped on the backsplash mania (much to DH's consternation), I love to look at other options in kitchen wall decorating. I have 13 pieces of wall acne (outlets and switches) in mine (not counting the island) that I'm always trying to cover up.

That's a fun take on a rooster (I miss your old one that was in the DR and I'm not even a rooster person). The copper looks great and functional, too. You know I love your cabs and the new pieces work well with them.

You did a great job finding a solution for that spot. Oh I wish I had an imagination like some of you. The dining rooms is so warm and inviting. I bet you have a difficult time getting guests to leave. Great job.

Thank you all. It would be pathetic to count all the threads where I have asked for help with this awkward space.

Parma, wall acne - that is too funny!! If I had it to do over again...I wouldn't do a backsplash....unless I was doing marble subway tiles with marble counters but that is not *me* I just like the look. BTW, I am soooo excited for you & your chairs!

Brut - what you talking about, girl??!! I am enjoying seeing the pics of your house - they are beautiful!! I may not always get to post b/c of time - but I have seen your gorgeous kitchen - wow - You are creative, my friend:)

I really need to focus on the windows - we face west & the sun is quite brutal in the summer.

I kinda think it is a coin toss where expenses are concerned between custom valances & shutters by the time you buy material/lining/ fringe/labor.

Nobody like the idea of woven wooden blinds or is that too much wood with the tables & cabinets?

A couple of your pics aren't showing.

I like woven blinds. They add a nice texture and a subtle mixture of colors.

Price is right, too.

Oh well.....I am onto thinking about something else now!! Imagine that?! That is where this forum helps me sooooo much - when I am in the planning stages, my mind goes everywhere & right now I really don't want to spend alot of money.

So, what about putting cellular shades on the doors like I have on the windows THEN making small like cornices out of trim to cover them? The trim would cover the stack of the cellular shades....

I would get to keep my view of the pool(important in summer with kids when I go in to get them a snack) - our bird feeders - kids playing, etc

Cellulars are simple to let up/down & don't require fussing with the fabric like roman shades.
