I Lost My Mother

My family, especially my father, could use some thoughts and prayers right now.

My mother passed away this afternoon. She had a severe stroke last Wednesday and has been in a hospice since then. She did not suffer, and for that I am very grateful.

Mom was almost 84, and was married to my father for 63 years. She had a wonderful life, filled with love, and she brought joy to so many. I will miss her terribly, but I find great comfort in believing that she is now with my son in a better place.

As I'm wiping my tears away, I have to say you pull my heart strings. I lost my mother two years ago to cancer. Sometimes I wonder to myself if it would have been easier to let her go to a sudden death, instead of living through each day, feeling totally and absolutely helpless, forced to watch her slowly lose the sparkle in her eye, until one day it's no longer there. I know in my heart that no matter the loss, it's the same, and no matter how many ways or times I could have said goodbye, I was never prepared for it. I never would have been. For the longest time, events would occur in my life, and my first thought would be to call my mother. But she isn't there anymore. It's an awful feeling to have to remind yourself of that. It's heart wrenching, and nobody could ever know the feeling of losing your mother until you've actually experienced it. There's something about the bond between a mother and child that just can't be compared. Fathers are special as are all family members and loved ones, but nothing could ever replace the void that was my mother. I miss my mumma, and there's not a day that goes by that I don't think of her. I felt the loss for the past two years, but I've only now just begun to cry. Like you, I've been fighting back the tears. My heart goes out to you.

Mary and Troy, I know where you both are coming from. I love my wife, and I love my dad..and sisters. But I have never loved anyone as much as I loved my mom. I know it is a strange thing to say, but I feel some comfort in knowing that life cannot take away anything 'stronger' from me ever because they took the person I loved the most already. That is not to say if my sisters, wife or father go before me I won't grieve, but I have had what I think is the worst feeling in 'my life' and nothing else could be quite as devastating. Thank you all for your kind and comforting words. I know I haven't corresponded since my initial posting. Its been hard, extremely hard. Some days are good and then the bad days erupt. I am still numb and feel empty and angry. I am however, blessed when it comes to friends, but its not the same. I miss they both. My mom and I may not have been close at the end, but I did love her despite our differences. She was difficult and hard to please. I know that I did all I could, even though it rarely seemed to be good enough. Its painful for me to talk about my brother..still so many unanswered questions. Some questions may never be answered. Obviously, nothing changes the end result. I don't know why I decided to return to this forum again. Perhaps I don't want to burden my friends with my heavy heart. They have been so supportive and wonderful that I just don't want them to see this side of me. I want and need them to believe that I am OKAY. They worry so much about me and I don't want to add to it. thank you for letting me express these feelings and for listening to me.

I'm so sorry. One thing that I've found helpful in banishing awful pictures from my mind is to replace them with something intense & absorbing & preferably loud. Even when I've watched something disturbing on the news, I'll turn on a sitcom & turn the volume up loud. For something like this, I think running or jogging or swimming might help get the oxygen pumping & clear your mind. Put away your photos of your mother for the time being; you'll be able to look at her image later, after the shock has eased up. Be patient with yourself; this was a trauma as well as a tragic loss, & it takes time for the body & the heart to heal. & while you do have to be a mother, this is the time for your husband to be strong & take care of you & take the "wife" load off your shoulders. We have to be strong, but we don't have to leap tall buildings at a single bound; ask for your husband's help & tell him how much you appreciate it. Ask your friends & other family to help you, too; these times come into everyone's life, not just other people's lives, & you're allowed to be the one in need. Take care.

She is in a better place, and didn't have to suffer. I'm so sorry for your loss but thankful for your mother. My mom also had a stroke at 84 and was bedfast and in a home for 4 years. She wished so much that she could have gone when she had the stroke and she suffered so much. You and your family are in my prayers.

I know it's so rough to lose a dear parent. I think it's even harder to lose the first one, as you feel the strong grief of the surviving parent. I'm glad that your mother didn't have to suffer.
