Cleaning Evaporator coil/A-coil??

OK...I don't know all the proper terms so bear with me.

My heating/cooling unit (internal) has an a-coil...I also saw that it is called an evaporator coil?

The "fins" are really dirty. Also, on the sides, lower on the a-frame, there is a gelatin-like gook. I have read on different websites to clean it with a coil cleaner (which I have but it is a very strong smell) and others have said to use dishwashing soap (1 part dishwashing liquid to 9 parts water). What I am concerned about is spraying directly onto the fins/coil? Where does the water go? Is there anything in there that can get damaged? Also, how do I keep the drain clean? I know there is something you are supposed to do to keep the drain clean, but I don't know where to find the "start" of the drain in the house to pour any kind of solution in it....? I just want to do this the proper way, and if it means hiring someone, I can do that, but like for everyone else....money is really tight.
