A built in would be nice, or I'd think about having the corner reframed at an angle so you get a nice diagonal wall to work with if you don't need the space.

Otherwise, it depends on what else is going on in the room. For example, if you are having a pool table, maybe working in a cue stick rack....if it's an entertainment space, work in a dry bar arrangement... if it's for video viewing, maybe a rack for DVDs and such.

Or you have a window there...anyway to work in a window seat?

Is the window not in the center? Or just the photo? If the right side has more room I would add an interesting piece with hooks. Since this is near your exit. The idea of a small window seat is great for adding to this. I would keep it as open as possible without built ins around it.

You didn't mention size, but when the dry wall is added, this area will become smaller. Not sure how much, but may change ideas for use decided. Building out around the window to add depth and room for potted plants with storage underneath would create it's own corner.

Actually, as I recall, we ran into the same issue in our guest room, so we had them reframe the entire wall out a little further to eliminate the jog as we had the room to do it....but we didn't have a window in the wall....

The room is a bedroom. It's the only room in the house where the window isn't centered because lining up exterior windows took priority. So with the off-center window and this jog, things will look a little off altogether.

The plan doesn't call for the concrete wall return, but apparently it needed to be done for load reasons (???). In any event, I just noticed it and there it will sit.

Sorry for my crude drawing that isn't to scale. The jog runs 18.5" along the west wall and 6" along the north wall. There will be two sets of 4' closet doors in the 11' closet along the south wall, so the west window wall really can't be reframed because the wall would then interfere with the west closet door which is already framed.

If you're still in the framing stage, move the closet to the other end and incorporate the corner jog into the closet......you will never see it.

I like the idea of some sort of hook set up or creating a small angled wall.

I was originally thinking I'd have the headboard sit against the north wall, but now it seems to make more sense to position the headboard on the east wall so you can look directly out the window to the lake from bed.

I'm using lots of wide horizontal shiplap throughout the house, so maybe I could have that added to the bump out in some fashion.

That's what I would do, if you can: put the closet on that side and bury it.

But often these sorts of jogs just end up blending in once the drywall is done. Maybe it's because I see a lot of high rise apartments that have these types of corners all over the place that I have learned to ignore them.

Maggie, don't you think the window will look even more oddly out of place if I moved the closet from the south wall to the north wall?

Windows don't have to be centered in every room: an off-center or toward the corner arrangement often makes furniture arrangement easier too. I've dealt with a couple obsessively-centered-window bedrooms where the windows make furniture placement very awkward if not almost impossible.

As long as there is space on each side for whatever window treatment you want--or it's not jammed right against the closet, you should be fine.

Agree with ineff, once it's offcenter, it's offcenter. But, once it's all painted out, it will not be nearly as noticeable as it is now. Maybe do some scale cutouts of your furniture and see what will work best.

I would build bookshelves and plop a comfy chair there. I would not want the window any closer to that corner than it already is. We have a couple of windows in our old (1960) house that are right up against walls and closets. I hate that- no way to do draperies nicely, although I do like my brise-bise curtains, but still...

If you don't want to move the closet there, then I'd do a wall of built-ins and cover the front (S) side of the jog with a cabinet door and make a matching size cabinet in the NE corner, with shelving, bookcases, even a built-in bench seat in between them.

I like the idea of a built in bookcase, with a reading chair by the window. The problem I see with moving the closet to the north wall is the bed placement. I would want to keep the bed on the long wall opposite the window, and it might seem crowded with a closet on the north wall. I wouldn't want a bed so close to the entry door on the south wall.

I agree with moving the closet to the wall closest to the window. As it is now, you'll have a room with TWO jogs in it, unless you can move the door up and extend the closet across the entire bottom wall.

I'd think about putting the bed on the north wall with a built-in headboard to hide the jog in the wall....

Since the N-S direction is the longest dimension of your room, I agree with Annie for the placement of the bed. An alternative if you don't like the built-in headboard would be to build in fairly narrow bookshelves framing each side of the window, using the window-seat idea below as well if you'd like that. Then you could use pull-down roman shades on the window for WT's. I like keeping the closet on the south wall.

I guess I am questioning the need for 2 closets in the room. The closet doors and other openings really cut the room up. I would draw this room to scale and play with furniture layout.

I like symmetry but often appreciate a larger piece of furniture centered (or near centered!) on a wall. Windows smack int he middle do not allow for that.

I feel that with the smaller closet removed one would not really notice the bump out.

rnmom, this is my daughter's bedroom, and even though she's in college now and will have her own place soon, she definitely needs the closet space. She would have preferred a walk-in, but my husband and I are attempting to downsize. That concept seems to work better for us in theory than in reality!

Here's another photo of the same built in idea with a window right next to it.

We have the same issue in a lower level guest bedroom located on the SW corner of our house, but this one doesn't bother me as much. I think I'll throw a tall plant or something similar in front of it and call it a day. Headboard will be positioned on south wall.

I don't think it would bother me a whole lot. If you don't want the closet on that wall, just plop the bed in the middle and put nightstands on either side and pretend like the corner is a non-issue (because it really isn't terrible looking - it's just a corner).
