Please settle an argument about cabinet glass

So, the cabinet glass is here and DH and I cannot agree on how to put it in. It is Bendheim European Fine Gauze, a semi sheer with a tiny geometric pattern. The smooth side is shiny and a bit wobbly, not completely smooth. The textured side is matte.

I think the smooth side should face out, picking up the reflections from the windows and throwing more light. Also easier to clean, though it will show more fingerprints in the meantime. I also worry that the texture will compete with the woven grass WTs I plan to buy (...any day now....already....)

DH thinks the "bumpy" side should face out. He thinks the reflection from the windows will be distracting. That's about the only argument he has come up with.

Is there some generally accepted wisdom on this issue? I know so much is subject to one's own taste. But I couldn't help but wonder what all you TKOs have done or would say. Thanks!

without a doubt I would put smooth side out - MUCH easier to clean!! and I don't think the reflective light would be too distracting. Nice kitchen BTW!

My Ikea patterned glass is smooth side out.

Gee Bill, I hate to be the one to burst your angry misogynistic bubble, but I will. You won't find a mower manual in the world that states the requirement of a penis or testosterone to have interest and operate lawnmowers or repair small engines. There are many women that handle this type of thing daily, and that doesn't make them man hating dykes, they just have an interest. Even in your most traditional families it's not always the husband that's repairing the equipment and mowing the lawns. In my household for example I'm the one that enjoys the order and neatness of a nicely groomed lawn, and as such I handle all of the yard work and maintenance of the equipment. To respond to someone's surprise over getting snapped at for stating she felt her husband was mistaken in his handling of something mower related (which the general consensus seems to be that he is) by saying what did she expect, or DUH! is just plain dinosaur behavior. While this forum may very well be mostly men, that this woman couldn't ask a question without some people jumping all over her is ridiculous.

In a past home, we had a walkway on the 2nd story that was open to the family room. We HATED it. Our son could hear the phone ring on the first floor and he was much farther down the hall. We walled up that 2nd story walkway. I would DEFINITELY do doors. Maybe French doors if you don't want pocket doors. Also, we did some areas of our new house with extra insulation and sound board. I would do this too. I have another friend who had a new house that she did not build and the thing she hated was all the sound between floors. I would do anything possible to keep that sound from mingling with the floor below. If your sons are anything like mine, they like to stay up later than we do. You will want a door there! Think about Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Do you have those games??? We are doing a video game room in our new house in the basement and we put doors on it. Soundproof that room!!!! :)

I've only ever seen textured glass with the smooth side out.

Gorgeous kitchen! Definitely smooth side out for ease of cleaning - of course if DH is going to do the cleaning I'd let him decide.

You're both right. Reflections may not matter if you're not in the room that much, or only a few windows let direct sunlight hit the glass. You could try both, assuming they are easy to change.

On any contested issue, the one who uses the item/cleans the item gets to decide. ;*) I'm all about easy to clean, and I've never had decorative glass installed any other way than smooth side out in any kitchen I've done.

Well, it seems unanimous. And DH probably isn't going to clean the kitchen any time soon.

I have hand blown glass and art glass, both have very different textures, oh and I have bubble glass in the dining room...they're all smooth side out, even the art glass that's quite textural on both sides, has the smoother side out.

My new pantry door has texture on outside...I have a couple of doors
on the same wall that will also have glass...it should be the same I
think, which goes against everything I have just read. I had not even
thought about this before. Uh oh, is this going to be a pita?
I'm just so scared of what I will find out I did wrong with my kitchen!

vicnsb- I just purchased 3 doors like yours. The textured side definitely faces out, you can tell by the trim around the glass.

I would probably want the smooth side out for cabinets, but now I'm not sure. I love my doors (they are already stained, just anxious to have them installed!).I guess it's just personal preference.
