yet another CL find- this dresser?

I know, I know, I am grabbing up too much.

But I do need a tall and a low dresser for the Florida funky frenchie coastal place...

Thomasville. $40.

I feel overwhelmed with accruing so much. But I think I should check it out. $40?!!

Oh yeah. Definitely check it out. The photo sure looks good, but you'll know a lot more in person. If it's in good shape the price is outstanding.

I have several pieces in my home that were "so ugly-I had to have them" or I felt sorry for and took them home. In fact I have at least one dog for those very same reasons. I might not buy this particular piece but I would most def stop the car and swoop it up if it was a curbside offering. However I would gift it to my youngest daughter who revels in such odd and unique decor! Made me smile this morning!

Thanks so much, everybody. I just finished typing a long response, and lost it!!! So, I'll try again. :) Lisa: Yes, I really want to keep it low-key, if possible. I'm not a "girly" type. :) Reno: What kind of lamp did you put on that beautiful chest you found? I forgot! wisrose: I know--it really should go on the other wall, centered. The problem is that the only outlet is in the middle of the other wall (the wall the chest is up against now), so I needed to hide the outlet and also needed it for the lamp. The old houses have such weird little quirks--why would anybody put electrical outlets in the middle of the wall?!?!? squirrel: There is no mirror to attach to the carved piece--there may have been at one time, though. In fact, I think I remember the owners saying that there was one attached, but it looked like a head attached to a chest and they removed it! But that's okay--if I come across a mirror in the future that might go with it, I'll put one up them. :) brutuses: Unfortunately, no, I didn't really get a "steal" this time. I paid $225 for it. But I had spent so many weeks looking for a small enough dresser (and they are hard to find!) that when this one appeared, I just jumped on it! Plus, it's birdseye maple, so I feel okay about it. Here's a close-up: I'm thinking maybe the radio doesn't belong on it, after all? :) scottmel: Do you have a photo of your room? I'd love to see it! teeda and patricia (and everybody else): So you think the lamp doesn't really work there? I'm not much of a crystal person, but do any of these strike your fancy? kimberly: I bought the bed at Jordan's Furniture (a large furniture store in Massachusetts). I think it cost about $200. I would have like to purchase an antique iron bed, but it wasn't in the budget at the time. But that's okay--this one is nice enough--for now. :) Finally, so you guys think the chair works there? I don't have another place for it, and was worried it was too "heavy" for the space. I put it at an angle because against the wall, it looked strange.

Here's a picture. It's kind of dark in the room right now. It's a pretty honey yellow pine. Above the two drawers is another drawer without pulls. It's obvious that the piece was stained dark at one point, trying to simulate a fancier wood. There's reddish stain in places and all of the bun feet are stained, with the rear one being very dark. The pulls are wood with little metal flowers in the middle. Now, I need to figure out how to fix the drawers. P.S. If anyone is interested: They also had a bed for sale in tiger oak with really amazing turned spindle posts. Haven't been able to find anything like that online.

Very few antiques prior to 1830 had makers marks. If this is a 1960s or 1970s piece with a makers mark, I would think it would a fantastic buy at that price. That was the time that the best reproductions were being made. There won't be anymore like that. Grab it while you can. I have some Thomasville, Pennsylvania House and Ethan Allen from that time, but the drawers are packed full of "stuff," but I know that all 3 have marks on them but I just don't remember what they are, but I would think this would be certainly worth the asking price.

Thomasville furniture tends to be a pretty sure bet for quality. $40 is a super price as long as it's in good working condition and the drawers don't smell funky.

I think I would pass. I don't like the extra wood piece behind the handles on the top two drawers - they look like someone did a repair job or something.

That square piece does look odd, doesn't it Les?

I have done some research. This series was made in dark wood and in the ivory with gold striping - those boxes would have striped perimeter in the painted version. The darker wood is rarer and more collectable. There is a dark pair out there of low and high dressers allegedly made in 1947 (seems too early) that is quite expensive. Single painted pieces here and there for 250-500 most from the 60's. They seem to go very quickly on CL.

I may take a look. The size is right for DH. First I'll see if I can squeeze a spot for it in the garage.

It looks like a great find for $40, and like it would hold a lot, too. I'd snap it up if the condition is good. I wish I could find such quality pieces at low prices on my local Craig's List.

The condition was acceptable, some marring on the top. One drawer has a kink in the metal runner which is why the fourth drawer down isn't seated perfectly. Easy fix. Solid wood including the top, drawers dovetailed front and back. Very clean, no smells. I'd give the overall build quality a solid B+. Nothing fabulous, but perfectly OK. It fills out the master bedroom need - DH is a dresser guy, I'm more closet with bins.

Seller said he'd had a couple other calls since his last price drop. (He'd started at 150) I wavered. He wasn't taking less. I measured and bought it, partly because it just squeezed into my 97 RAV.

And because I'm bored with chasing furniture bits and want to move on to plannng what goes where, color schemes, etc.

I imagine I'll have some questions....
