My dad has been in the hospital for about 2 1/2 weeks with pneumonia, and fluid. We lost him this morning. RIP daddy.

I have loved reading all the posts and gives me comfort that there are a lot of people who are experiencing the same thing as me. I too miss both my parents, still. My mom died 9 years ago from ovarian cancer and my Dad died 6 years ago after a long battle with renal failure and being on dialysis as a result. I cared for both my parents for years while they were ill. We had always been close and saw each other almost every day of my life. The last few years we all lived together while I was working full time, married and raising two boys. I was so busy with everything that I did not have time to stop and think about what was going to happen when they were gone. I miss them terribly every day and wish I would have just stopped and talked for hours on end to them while they were ill instead of doing the laundry, cleaning the house or grocery shopping or cooking. I am thankful I was able to provide them a safe home to live in and never had to place either one in a nursing home. Both boys are now grown and away from home, my husband works out of town a lot and recently my Uncle (my Mom's brother) has moved in with us after having several mini strokes and can no longer live alone. This has brought back the memories of caring for my Mom and Dad and makes me miss them more and more. I still work full time and this was a huge adjustment as my husband & I were just getting used to being empty nesters and had begun taking trips. We have adjusted accordingly and I am thankful once again that I am able to give my Uncle the care he needs without going to a nursing home. Grief can only be dealt on a day to day basis. Sometimes I can handle it and sometimes I just need a good cry. I think about all the great times we had and that makes me happy, but then the grief creeps back in because I can no longer talk to, smile at, laugh with, cry with or hug my parents ever again. My only comfort is knowing I will see them again one day in Heaven and that is what keeps me going day to day.

I was waiting for a comment on the grill ornament! LOL You know how people buy antlers and a reindeer nose for their car around Christmas? I put a red glove stuffed with another glove on my grill, instead of laying out money for the antlers which I didn't want as a package. I noticed how easy my car was to spot in parking lots among all the black cars. Gino's mom crocheted me this thing, it's supposed to be a nose. :-) It faded over time, but I can still find my car because of the dangly. But I sure get some weird looks. Time to make a new red one.

Could a designer please weigh in? Would this work? This won't require moving walls. The closet will only be 6 feet across, but we could do custom built in storage on the other side instead of hanging space on both sides, so maybe 6' is okay? All I need is to give my Dad some options to consider and refine his thoughts on what he wants before he meets with professionals. I have a relationship with an excellent tile pro who is revered on this forum who built all 4 of my showers and baths, so he's going to be in good hands there. I also have a relationship with a local custom cabinet builder who made all my master bathroom cabinets and custom built my closet, and has done other smaller jobs for me, even building and repairing furniture; crazy extremely skilled person. So I know that whatever the solution is regarding the layout, my Dad will have an excellent tile pro and cabinet builder on his team.

I cannot speak for your unit, but we do a lot of work in condos. Around here, luckily, most of them don't really care what you do inside ( to a point! ) but they do require paperwork filled out with the license and insurance of the contractor doing the work. This is where you would get into some trouble unless of course your Dad is a licensed contractor. I think it is time to just sit down and have a conversation with your Dad. This isn't about whether he can do this or not. Do you really even want this? All you are doing is opening a wall to look into a hallway? You mentioned a bar top? Where's the design plan , drawings? Do you really know what this is going to look like? Slow this down , get a plan and set the details and the end goal. If he does not agree, then kindly ask him to repair the wall and call it a day. I feel for you - it's tough to fight with a contractor, especially when it is your Dad!

Tami, I am so very sorry you lost your Dad. Unfortunately, you are now a member of a club no one wants in. I lost my Dad 26 years ago.

There is nothing I can say or do to ease your pain, but I truly wish I could. The only thing that will help is time.

I pray you find peace from this devastating sorrow. God bless your father's soul.

Oh Tami, I send you my sincere condolences as the loss of a father is really heart breaking and it takes quite a while to recover. Be kind to yourself, cry when you feel the need and know that he's safe and sound and waiting and watching. God bless you and may he rest in peace, amen.

I'm sorry he wasn't able to recover. You must be exhausted from waiting and hoping. Rest. Grieve. One day the happy memories will help balance the sorrow and shock you feel now.

Thank you all so much. It means a lot to me. We moved him to hospice on Thurs. evening. They were fantastic with him, and us. Both of my DBs and one SIL stayed with him the first night. I tried, but Dad caught me when I came back from the restroom about 2:45 am. He thought I had left earlier. On Fri. night it was my youngest DB and I who stayed. Dad didn't fuss that I stayed. My other DB had a major heart attack several years ago, and desperately needed some sleep. Mom & Dad have been staying with my youngest DB. Mom will continue to. He is in charge of everything. He is doing a wonderful job, and my SIL is good with mom also. Dad was very restless until about 4 am. We were constantly jumping up to give him a sip of water, or move his bed position. When he slept, we rested. They gave him more meds about 4, and I jumped up a couple more times for water, and one last bed position. He slept then without moving or drinking until the end. As my DB watched over him, he realized it was going to be close. Other DB was on his way, and was going to pick up breakfast for us. DB called and said don't stop. I saw him coming up the sidewalk, and said here he comes, and you could see the breathing change. Dad had heard me. DB walked in as far as the foot of the bed, and he was gone.

Dad was Dad to the end. The Tech came in about 10:30 to check on him and empty his Folley bag. She checked him, went and got the container, looked at him again, and bent over to empty the bag. His eyes opened, he said "Caught you" and closed his eyes again. She about lost it! The she laughed and said it was a good thing she hadn't opened the valve! The room would have been baptized! When she came in later, I asked her if she was going to want to work night shift for a while. She laughed and said "Well, lets just put it this way. It was a trip to the rest room, with a clean up on isle 3!" It was a good memory to leave us all with.

I had had maybe 5 hours of sleep when I posted yesterday.
I took a 2 hour nap, we went out for supper, and I slept all night, barely moving. Today, as my DB didn't need me for any arrangements, I took my DD, and my DIL to be looking at dresses for the wedding. It was good to be out thinking of something happy, and we had a good time. Tomorrow, DD & I are going thru photos, and put them together for the funeral. As DD's birthday is on Wed. we are waiting until later in the week for the funeral.

I'm so sorry, Tami. It sounds like he had a peaceful death, which is a nice thing. It's good that you have something positive to focus on as well.

GrammyMyrna, besides family and personal friends, my friends here at the KT ARE my strength! Every day, no matter what is going on in my life. I have not seen you here, so welcome! When you have been here for awhile, you will know what I mean.

The arangements were made this morning. Viewing will be Thurs. Funeral on Friday. My kids came and helped me go thru photos today. Those are scanned in, and now I need to go thru all the ones on my external hard drive. They will be put on a flash drive and the funeral home will run a slide show on a TV of them all. The memories have been good. So far, I am doing good. When it really hits, I know it will hit hard, but I know I will get thru it.
