Lumbar Spinal Stenosis and Arthritis

On a recent topic I think it was "How old are you" a few of

you mention having this. I have it also and was wondering

what meds you take to manage pain. The Dr. put me on Mobic

15mgs once a day and it isn't doing anything. Any advice?

My DH has severe back problems (arthritis type) and went through endless rounds of meds several years ago. One of them was Mobic, and -- started with an R I think -- anyway, none of them ever helped at all. He is now on Nortriptilyn (sp?), which helps him sleep, helps his appetitie (he had lost about 40 pounds through his ordeal), and has some pain blocking effect. He also does PT at home - or he is supposed to.

I don't have Lumbar Spinal Stenosis but I do have arthritis in my lumbar region due to damage from injuries and my Neurosurgeon put me on Lyrica, 75mg twice daily. It seems to give me some much needed relief from some of my daily pain. They are offering it to people with Fibromyalgia recently too. It's suppose to help heal nerves. Talk to your Doc about it. Good luck. Let us know how you are doing. I sympathize and am sorry you have chronic pain.

I can tell you my horror stories of spinal fusion. Instead let me say that if you have a choice to keep the mobility of your spine and do an artificial disc by all means TRY THIS FIRST. One of the problems long term with fusion is the wear and tear on the joints above and below, it's like having one link not being able to move in a chain. That chain learns to move different, sometimes not even noticing a big change in the beginning. But years down the line you could end up like me, I have fusion with pedical screws and a rod at L4-s1. These surgeries were done over 10yrs ago. I know am getting pain in my neck and numbness in my arms do to narrowing of the nerve canal. Other thing to think about is while surgery is usually pretty good at making this functional or stable again it DOES NOT mean you will be out of pain. For some lucky people it does take care of both. I have been a chronic pain patient for 10yrs and I am only 43. Never in an auto accident, my "warranty" just wore out early. I wish you well, see as many DRs as you can for second and third opinions before you let them do anything. I did this before my second surgery, I went to USC, UCLA, LOMA LINDA and a couple other places. If only I had done this BEFORE my FIRST surgery I wouldn't be in the mess I am in today.

Thanks for asking Socks .... Had the surgery one week ago today. Got out of the hospital the next afternoon. I'm now home wearing a hard collar, bone stimulator machine and trying to stay off the computer. I'm only allowed on for 20 mins at a time. I was totally bed-ridden until yesterday... sleeping most of the day and night, so that helped keep me off the computer. So far the only real pain is my throat and left shoulder. Loss of voice is typical with this surgery. Mine finally came back yesterday afternoon. I was warned my shoulders might hurt after the surgery but was never told why. I might call the doctor and ask what causes the shoulder pain. Surgery ended up not quite what I expected. Instead of removing the bottom two fused vertebrae, the doctor cleaned the bone spurs off the fused verts and removed C5 instead. He cleaned up and realigned C3 and C4 and fused C4-C5-C6 with what's called a PEEK cage. From what I can tell, my range of motion is better than before and very little pain when I move. But I'm not going to be able to fully test it for a couple months. Because my throat is still sore from them moving the esophagus and other stuff aside to access the spine from the front, it's difficult to tell if my cough and breathing issues are gone. Good responses and help here. First, you have convinced me to have a neurosurgeon, if I decide to have the surgery. The PM doctor mentioned the name of a doctor that he is well acquainted with and worked with when he was doing his residency. Problem there is he is not local, maybe 50 miles away. After your surgery did you need to go back to see your surgeon? I'm thinking that riding that distance could be a problem. Also, did you have MRIs before the surgery, or were CT scans sufficient? I have to admit my wimpiness here, because I don't like the idea of the MRI, and have never had one. I think I would feel claustrophobic. I know they use sedation, and the PM doctor said he would suggest Valium. I have never had Valium for anything. Hi, chemocurl, aka the other Sue. Your description of the disc bursting is how the PM doctor described it to me. He demonstrated it by putting his thumb and finger together and slowly tightening it. The idea of a treadmill is good especially considering bad weather. Wanda, when the problem hit me this time, the pain was like you said, worse than childbirth. I realized I had a problem one day when I was trying to get into a line of traffic from a parking lot, and I could not move my foot from the brake to the gas pedal. I had to wait it out til I finally got it done, and went straight home. Haven't driven since that day. (That was a "revolting development!") Haven't been able to walk much since then either. The odd thing though was that pain was in my right hip. It seems like all of you have had good results, and that is encouraging. I'm really "tough" when it comes to surgeries, which I've had several of, and have never needed help at home afterwards. I think the MRI thing is the problem I need to work on. Thanks to all of you. My friend takes Tramadol for pain and it works better for her than the pills with codeine. If that isn't enough then she takes 2 Tylenol with it. The Tramadol doesn't make her nauseous - the pills with codeine do. She make sure that she eats something when she takes them. Good luck.

If you are willing to share, what tests did they do to diagnose you? Are you seeing a rheumy?

I know someone who was given Tramadol, that lynne mentioned, and it did make her terribly nauseous, but she took it on an empty stomach. She's going to try half the dosage with food when she feels better.

I don't think she can take Mobic because she has high blood pressure. I'm glad you asked the question and will tell her about any suggestions.

I take the 8-hour Tylenol arthritis formula, which helps me some but not completely. I can't take most other pain relievers because I'm allergic to aspirin. Codeine derivatives hurt my stomach. (sigh)

I had a Lumbar x-ray and a Lumbar MRI that's how it was
diagnose. The MRI also showed bluging disc and degenative
disc disease.

I got a script for a generic Mobic on Friday for back pain. I haven't taken one yet and was wishing I had them here at work today instead of at home.

I know they have to cover everything when listing possible side effects but joint and back pain was discouraging and of course the sudden heart attack.

I'm so sorry about your diagnosis. I know it has been very hard on DH - trying to continue working and doing all of the other stuff he enjoys. With him, they were trying to rule out ankylosing spondylitis (which I guess they ultimately did), but his doctor wouldn't let him work for nine months. (OUCH on the budget!)

I just opened my 3-ring binder of DHs experience, and it looks like during the course of nine months, he also tried:
Methylpred (steroids, I think?)
Tizanidine
Skelaxin
Arthrotec
Celebrex
Bextra

Occasionally he took Flexeril (muscle relaxer?) but rarely. If I remember right, the steroids did him the most good but he wasn't given those very often because of side effects.

Funny thing is, DH hates pills! He takes his Nortriptilyn now, along with Glucosamine-Chondroitin (sp?) and ibuprofen.
