oil burner smoke backup

I have had my 4 year old oil burner/boiler with hot water baseboard back up in our second home twice in the last 2 years and fill the house up with smoke, causing severe damage, even with proper cleaning and maintience.

The house is 2 hours away but we do use it year round and I keep the heat at 40 in the winter.

No one seems to know why, but it has happened during very cold snaps in deep winter.

I was hoping a system that could monitor the efficiency and make a call when something was wrong would be great but I can not seem to find anything.

I asked a few oil providers in my area about this and they knew nothing.

I would be happy if it would just shut the oil burner off when the smoke started to fill the house.

One other thing, this system uses a side shot power venter.

Can a oil burner be switched to propane and keep my boiler being that it is fairly new?

Thank You for any help
