Silver Polish + Silver Chests

I was going to post this on Entertaining but it doesn't seem to get a huge amount of traffic so here I am. :-) Hope you guys can help me out.

I have inherited a reasonable amount of silver, some sterling and some plate. Thus in addition to the few pieces I had previously I now have a considerable amount to clean. I've always used Haggerty's or Birk's cream anti-tarnish but I can't seem to find either where I live. Anyone have a fave they find works well?

The SS flatware is in a pretty old chest. It works just find - no tarnishing - but I'd really like a larger chest that could store the serving pieces and such. Does anyone have one they are really pleased with? If so, I would appreciate the info on it.

I use Wrights sliver polish....and have bought2 silver storage chests on ebay...
But storing it in ad rawer that you have lined with silver cloth and then having a piece of silver cloth to lay over the top of the stuff in the drawer, works very well too!

Our kids got us this chest for our 20th anniversary. It's beautiful & the silver cloth lining works great. Put your SS flatware in clean/polished & it stays that way.

I use MAAS or Wrights for cleaning/polishing. I think Wrights is easier but MAAS does a better job.

You might see how much these are worth as silver scrap. Probably not a lot if this is the usual American 20th Century electroplated silver, but who is going to USE these ruined pieces. Before you invest in replating any, think who would ever USE them. (Research any hallmarks first.) I had a cleaner 'polish' a 19th Century silver water pitcher with steel wool. The cleaning service paid to have it replated. The pair of cleaners I hired a year ago to spend a full day cleaning my house told me they wouldn't touch my 'gold' bathroom faucets. (They are polished brass.) Life is full of surprises!

The little round brush has very stiff bristles. The mark on it looks like a deer head facing left then says 70. The ones I think really belong together are: the regular hair brush has lion, anchor and maybe a G then C 632. The long brush has the other hallmarks then C636. The mirror has hallmarks then number C642, The whisk hallmark G 640. Finally the jar has lion, anchor and ? I've taken the most close up I can of that hallmark.All the pieces I have. The ones I'm pretty sure belong together -- all but the whisk thingie are monogramed the same The three hallmarks and the best I can do from the jar lid. Any ideas would be deeply appreciated. .

I am generation Y and I think my generation generally didn't register for Sterling. I do have a beautiful full set (Grand Baroque) handed down to me from my grandmother that stays in it's velvet lined airtight case and rarely needs polishing. I just wanted to say thanks for the post. The smell of silver polish brings back wonderful memories of my mother and grandmother polishing their treasured silver. It would be an all day event. They would lay out each piece over the dining table, and one by one, we would polish then hand wash each piece, hand dry each piece carefully in special super soft towels my grandmother had just for her silver and then they would count each every piece before returning it to its case, in fear that one might have fallen or been lost. Polishing silver always meant an important meal, event or special occasion was on the horizon.

I am gathering that none of you has seen this yellowing and that it is therefore unique to me and my polishes. I am just noticing that this may be a lighting effect. In evening electric light and down in my hand, a piece of my Rogers Bros. Remembrance set appears more blackish and I can see that the tarnish can partially be removed onto my hand. I suppose tarnish is always removable in that manner but I wasn't paying attention since I didn't appear to have problems before. I said I took my coffee/tea set DOWN because it is displayed on top of a china cabinet. Perhaps the yellow/orange is most obvious in sunlight viewed from below. I will move things around and see if I can learn anything about lighting effects. I think the only regular polish available here would be Wright's. I guess unless someone suggests something else, that I will get some and date my next polish session.

I like Wrights too. The silver sets I have do live in the chests, but I am about to clear out a drawer to line it with silver cloth the way Linda does. My mom stores hers that way too and it works really well.

I am "lucky" enough to have 3 sets for 12 plus a luncheon set, and I use them for everyday and have found that the Connoisseur Silver Wipes, sold at Bed, Bath and Beyond are great. Riverrat turned me to those and when I get down to 3 sheets, I go for a new box. Just wet the silver and wipe/rub and the tarnish is gone. I also was buying the Hagerty silver dip at BB&B but they no longer carry it. Wrights is fast but the silver seems to tarnish much faster than with Hagerty.

You can buy the silver cloth at the fabric store and line a drawer or flatware tray and it really does help. Keep it "cacooned". Also, made by Hagerty are silver strips, long narrow strips of a treated paper that you can place in the drawer to prevent tarnish. Great for larger items placed in a zip bag, like a coffee pot or tray.

Never, ever put the silver in the dishwasher mixed with your stainless. You can dishwasher it, but they cannot touch or you will have black tarnish like marks.

But most importantly, use your silver when ever you can.

Peppi, I'll look for those cloths at BB&B. I've never had silver and never wanted any, but Elery just presented me with some "family" silver. It's 1847 Rogers Bros. and it's a pattern called Silhouette.

He gave it to me last winter, so that I could use it at Easter but I didn't get around to polishing it. Maybe I will someday. Probably not...
