Brickeye - thanks for your reply. I think you misunderstood. I didn't mean capping off the stub. I meant capping off the secondary tube (the one without the T and drips condensation into the pan if the one with the T fails). That's the one blowing cold air, not the one with the T. Of course I won't cap it off 'cause it wouldn't drain if it had to. I'm simply trying to understand whether I need to be concerned because that secondary drain tube is blowing cold air into the attic. Carl

Carrier #58UVB is their 95% AFUE furnace. I do not know of any material problems with this model. I have many of these units installed and have not experienced and reliability problems. Condensate into the sump, why not. The condensate is slightly acidic but should not present any problems. If the thought bothers you, take a piece of 6"PVC with an end cap, drill a hole in the bottom, fill the PVC with marble chips (lime stone), run the condensate over the chips and drain into the sump. The ph should be around 7 which is neutral. You will get a slight by-product of co2 from the reaction. A 16 year old house, how large? Your home should have R13 in the walls and minimum of R-30 possibly R-45 in the ceiling depending on building codes when your home was built. 100k-Btu sounds large to me, except if you have a mansion. I would advise a manual-J. How large is your existing furnace? If you are changing your furnace to save a lot of $$ in energy costs, your savings will be about 16%. Where did you find that rule? Local rule? The rules will vary by location. In city nearby to my location, the washing machine effluent must go to the sanitary sewer while sump pump for flood water must not go to the sanitary sewer.

Sue, From what I can tell you're pretty much SOL on the sump failure. As it seems you've figured out, that water will be considered a "flood" and excluded by State Farm and every other insurer on earth...OK that may be an exaggeration, but you get the point. You could by flood coverage, but as you've found, it's very expensive and tends to define "flood" in a pretty narrow scope. I use to write a ton of flood policies when I was in RI, but here in CT not so much. From memory, a flood only affecting 1 person (flooded basement) doesn't meet FEMA'S definition. Unfortunately, my advice to you is the same I give to most of my clients in similar situations. Your house insurance was never designed to cover every conceivable risk. As such, you will run into situations that you will not be able to transfer that risk to us. OK, so what do you do? Take the good advice that others have already offered regarding back up systems. But as any good builder would advise, you're much better off heading off the water long before it ever gets into the basement. French drains and extended downspouts will probably solve the problem. I realize the expense, but the alternative isn't cheap either. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. I'll see if I can find your other post.
