How can I improve my cooking experience in the new kitchen?
Comments (15)Looking at your layout, I don't think you have the room for a 36" range. You will need a filler between the blind corner and any adjacent cabinet. That nixes your pullout that you have there. And you have minimal landing space on the other side next to a major traffic route. That will leave you with a 30" range fitting MUCH better. You could do a 30" induction range and separate wall oven elsewhere, or something like the GE Cafe with the griddle and double ovens below. That would give you the maximum versatility in the smallest space. If you want to grill, use a grill pan or do it outside. It doubles your requirements for ventilation, which you haven't discussed at all. That will get pretty expensive as you will be required to have makeup air for the CFM that you would need to have for a grill. In your situation, I'd put a separate under counter oven in place of the under counter MW. Maybe a speed oven, but the best place for the MW is next to the fridge as that's the logical flow of snackers and reheaters. I'd also really revisit having the work table as island. You could make the island work a lot harder by having a small prep sink on it and putting the trash there as well. That would give you a better prep zone with less walking. I'd suggest swapping the pantry and fridge. You need a straight shot from the fridge to the sink to make the prep zone work best. And that involves water access. So, you need the fridge at the bottom of that aisle, or a prep sink on the island. Or both. Otherwise, you're adding a lot of roadwork to making dinner....See MorePlease share your experience getting cabinet quotes
Comments (22)Thank you again for all of the responses. I am glad this has generated some honest discussion and that people have been willing to share their experiences. Palimpset, thank you for your input. I know I haven't decided how much I want to spend and that's a problem. It would not be totally unreasonable to spend a lot on this kitchen, especially if I went with the 10-20% of home value 'guideline'. I can swing spending that much if I chose. The kitchen is old and ready to be torn out, and I have very specific tastes so I am ready to do it and not unwilling to spend the money. I do not want to 'waste' money on something either, so I struggle with spending the money on cabs, mostly because the countertops and range are the things that I really care about. :) I already chose a yellow berta. How sharp would that be against a lovely misty grey? I have to decide if I think it's worth another __k to get the pale grey that I :really: want or would I be just as happy to have gloss white and roll that money into the divine glass tiles in the bathroom. I am also going to look into getting custom doors for Ikea cabs, although from the sounds of it, a lot of the cost was in the hand painted laquer. I fully appreciate the work involved, and have no problem paying for work where it's deserved.....I guess I just have to decide if I think it's worth it for this project. . Oh, and as an aside, I have been very specific when I have gone to the shops. Exactly how many ft of cabinets, lowers only, all drawers, gloss finish, flat front doors, metal drawer boxes.... I haven't just said I have a kitchen that might be 10ft of cabinets and I'm not sure what type of finish I want. I am going to keep looking for local shops, unfortunately I live in a place that has had a VERY good economy until very recently, so most kitchens around here were 100k plus jobs that no one batted an eye at. I think everyone's a little slow to catch up that things aren't quite what they were. I am encouraged to beat the bushes. Thank you!! It seems like there are plenty of places that will do wood cabs, I wish I wanted those and not gloss!!!...See MoreAwaiting Cabinet Quotes - Critique My Sketches
Comments (12)You might not regret changing the corner range, because it's what you have. You don't know what you're missing until you find something better. More counter space in that area = much better! You'll also have room for more upper cabinets, and it would allow you to widen the 24" base drawer cabinet into an even more functional, wider base drawer and add a lazy Susan into that corner. Look at all the storage in just this paragraph! I second the idea of moving the desk to the window, swapping the fridge & micro and moving the pantry over. Desk ideas, though: Besides the window space, there's also the option of turning the existing pantry into the desk area. Don't I see a plastic-y desk/table thing just inside your family room? Is that for the kids, or could that area against that wall be turned into a computer/tech area for the whole family? Something in me wants to 1) rotate the island 90 degrees so the chairs are in the dining room. 2) ask why you want a 62" deep island? You can't wipe it from one side... Are you stepping the island for the seating area? I also see where turning the island would allow you to put the micro opposite the moved range, and still keep what I believe you've drawn as dish drawers towards the sink. You could still have an end drawer cabinet. Again, more cabinet space. I can see where it's time to update the cabinets. You've got an awful lot of wood going on there. And despite all the quotation marks, sometimes wood is just worth painting to make a very inexpensive change. Proper preparation would make stripping it again later, easier. That said, please consider donating your cabinets. They look like they're in good condition. Another question is where you could actually reface your cabinets and have inset doors made. No, it's not as difficult as nay-sayers love to moan. If I can do it, anyone can do it! Anyway, some of your cabinets would fit your plan and reduce what you'd need to buy. Are you keeping your black granite (?) for anything? Those would be some nice pieces elsewhere, perhaps in that family room, computer/tech area? [LOL]...See MoreMy Experience with Barker Cabinets (1 of 3)
Comments (1)Curious if you ever posted your other thoughts on Barker cabinets, and would you be willing to share a pic of your finished kitchen? In the remodel process and considering Barker painted white shaker doors, so I'd love to see how your space turned out!...See MoreLinda
