Please....a can opener that works

I just tossed my electric Black and Decker out the back door into the yard. Yeah, I've sent toasters, can openers, another few electronics of kitchen utensils that don't work according to promise. I have bought from high end kitchen stores and Kohls - they take them back without having to bring in a can of dog food to show it doesn't work.

I would pay $2,000 for a Binford 9000 that works

I use an oxo manual one. No wasted counter space, no electric outlet needed... :)

I have never had an electric opener. I have one from Pampered Chef that I love.

I have a problem with my liftmaster 1/2 hp. My house was built in 2005 but im not sure what year the opener is, but my remotes do not work and my hard wire button doesnt work but is blinking. My sensors that detect objects in the way still blinks if i put my leg or something in the way but light bulb on the lifter itself doesnt work and it is a good bulb. and i plugged other objects like a fan or charger or something in that outlet on the ceiling that the lifter is plugged in at and it works. when i unplug the lifter the hard wire button light goes out and when i plug it back up it continues to blink still. What do i need to do?

ATK tested can openers today, and their favorite was Rosle, made in Germany. It's about $35 here. It's in the category of "safe" can openers, in that it does not cut the can or lid but simply breaks the seal on the outside rim, leaving a lid and can without sharp edges. The Rosle works better than the Oxo because it lifts the lid off of the can when it is finished instead of leaving it on. If you open a lot of cans, I would recommend it, based on the demonstrations I saw on ATK. I buy very few cans and so I seldom use a can opener. About the only thing I buy in cans is tomatoes, although I occasionally buy olives in cans, since they are much cheaper than ones in bottles. I keep a few cans in my earthquake survival kit, but I have to remember to use them and replace them. I've considered buying canned salmon, since the price of wild caught Alaskan salmon has gone so high (although I expect it to go down a bit during the summer). It's important to have a manual can opener in case of earthquakes, since there will be no electricity. My neighbor Wilma in Culver City had plenty of canned food in 1994, but only an electric can opener. I gave her food from my fridge. Lars

I have a Chamberlain that i'm upgrading to the MyQ wall panel. I can't get the wall unit to work. I have 2 identical garage doors, 1 works just fine. The second is blowing my mind. Here are the facts: - The old panel works. - New panel LED will not turn on. If I play with the red wire (rub it on the back a bit) it will start the garage door moving, but still won't turn on the LED even for a moment. - I stripped new wires and tried those. Still nothing. But the old panel will still work fine with the new stripped wires. - Chamberlain was very kind and sent a new panel. Same outcome with all the combinations from above. What could possibly be wrong? The other garage door was very easy to change out and has worked just fine. What really gets me is the old wall unit continues to work just fine. Why I need to change it? I don't really, but as I've been automating things in the house, the garage doors are nice to control from my phone. I can set an alarm if they're opened too long (kids forget to close) and if i'm gone I can let someone in without having to send them through the house.

Yes. The Zyliss locks in place, and it's the latch that broke on the old style one. The new one is flexible so shouldn't break easily. I think the warranty is five years, and they replaced mine without paperwork, just by my e-mail. You still have to hang on, but you don't need to squeeze. You do have to press the button to release it, though, and that takes some pressure, as does squeezing it shut and piercing the can to start with. The other thing it does is lift the lid with a magnet, and has a lever to push it off with, so you don't have to touch it. You have to cut it clean off, though. It's not strong enough to lift the lid if you leave it attached. The lids from some 28 oz. cans are a bit much for the magnet, but with your hand issues, I think this might be helpful to you. The Joseph Joseph side cutter I linked up topic also locks on, then you push the big green button to release it. The Kuhn Rikon lid lifter works in a similar way, cutting the side. Neither needs to be squeezed to start, just kind of hooked in place, so that might be better for you, and both hold the lid until you press the release. OTOH, if you have a hard time holding delicately while lifting, the lack of a top rim to stabilize your opened can might be problematic. I hope you find one you like.

I have the non-electric, which removes the lid, leaving NO SHARP edges - I have 3 of them. They are easy on the hands, too.

I have a Starfrit can opener - best one I have ever had. It's not electric, and it does what Kayjones' does - no sharp edges.

I've thrown away more electric can openers than I can count. I finally ended up with a manual one, but I really REALLY want a wall-mounted SwingAway.

oklamoni beat me to it! go to target (my fave place for oxo brand) it has a nice cushy black handle...bought mine way back in 2000 (when we thought there might be a problem, lol) it's been thru the dishwasher a ton, too..btw wanted to get a new one and dh brought home a fancier one, with a "locking" device, tossed it out after 6 months...

I have a Good Cook brand manual can opener. Works so smoothly you question whether it's cutting or not. It's one of the side cutting "safety", no sharp edges, etc, things. Bought it at Target or Kmart for a few bucks. I had one of the TV advertised types before that and liked the side cutting but it was tough to use. Didn't mind when that one died. I didn't expect much from the Good Cook one because of the price but was pleasantly surprised. No gunk buildup on it and it's lightweight too. And it doesn't waste time, weight and resources on things like that useless bottle opener on a Swing-A-Way.

I have an ancient manual SwingAway, and it always works. I've had electric ones, and hated them.

I, too, gave up on the electric can opener many years ago. I have a Kuhn-Rikon that I got at T.J. Maxx. I like it because it cuts the lid clean. No jagged edges to cut yourself on.

I use the One Touch can opener. It's the best can opener that I have ever used. You just place it on the can, push the button and it goes around the top of the can then stops automatically when it is done.

I love my electric can opener!! Never had a single problem. Has a knife sharpener on the back. Opens large cans with ease. Blade part detaches for easy cleaning too.

Mine is a Hamilton Beach that takes the bigger cans also, about 5-6 years old or more.

I have a manual SwingAway. I never put it in the dishwasher though. I think they work very well.

I have a manual KitchenAid but like the Oxo as well. I dislike the electric ones.

Used to use a church key and liked those the best! Did use a SwingAway a long time ago too.

Yeas ago (about 25), like you, I became completely frustrated with my electric can opener. My sister sent me a handheld Amco Swing-a-Way for Christmas that year. I have not used another can opener since.

I have the Swing A Way and the Pampered Chef one. Both work well. I hated the electric opener, too.

I have a nice one from the grocery store. It doesn't leave any sharp edges either. But it looks different from the ones above. It works great. I need to find one for left handers, my son has a problem using the right handed ones. It's quite funny! lol

I have a manual Swing a Way, too. It has worked just great for years. I could not be bothered with an electric one taking up space on the counter. My mother has some dumb electric hand held thing. She has to get it out, plug it in, use it and then put it away each time. Big waste of time, but she likes gadgets.

I bought a Swingline hand held can opener years ago. It was advertised as the one NASA approved to use on space flights. That's how old it is, and it works great.

Jodi, I bought one of those not long ago and it was
awful. It just wouldn't work! Then I tried another, and
same problems! I thought I'd perhaps purchased a lemon.
Guess not! lol

This is the one I bought a few months ago. It works
wonderfully! It was at Safeway or FredMeyers... Good Cook
brand. Although, I don't think mine has that hookie thing
on the bottom part! lol Has anyone seen a can opener for lefties?

I've never had an electric one (I'm 62.) I like the manual ones because I can throw them in the dishwasher (tuna fish.) I buy them at the Dollar Tree and when they get rusty I buy another.
