With everyone's permission I copied and pasted this article.

" This Saturday, on the 90th Miss American Pageant, one woman will make history. But it won't necessarily be the contestant who walks away with the crown.

Miss Delaware, aka Kayla Martell, has already been making headlines for being the first bald contestant in the competition's history. Kayla suffers from alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune system attacks hair follicles and suppresses or stops hair growth. It usually results in loss of hair from all over the body, but typically the scalp."

I think I saw an item about her on some TV program. Good for her!! She is so brave and I wish her much luck.

Deci, you sure didn't get much response to your post on the LD forum. That's unusual; I think what happened is that (a) you provided a LOT of information, and (b) you answered your own post right away so it dropped down the list pretty quickly. If the pace of your posting is any indication you've probably done a lot more by now and maybe solved all your problems, but here are a couple of thoughts for what it's worth: If you want height in the landscaping without blocking the windows, put the tall things away from the house. Don't think of landscaping as only being the foundation planting. A bit of stuff at the front of the property can add a lot. Don't expect too much of yourself all at once. If you're novices, then take it one step at a time or you'll end up overwhelmed with watering and weeding with too many newly planted beds. Novices rarely get all the way to Wow in one season unless they hire it - in fact, no one does. Your neighbour's fence does not look that bad to me and if you cut all that brushy stuff back you may get some nice growth on it in spring/summer. This looks like something you should leave until you have your front border done. If you want stuff to look good all year 'round - and that's a tall order! - then you will need to stick mostly to evergreens. But that can be boring. You can regard the evergreens as bones and intersperse them with deciduous or perennial or even annual colour. Good luck! KarinL

The brown areas sort of look like what is happening to a few of mine.I hope it's not.This stuff spreads like a plague.I'm leaning towards bacterial canker that is on my plants. Has it been rainy in your location recently?I think it is distributed that way. I had to cut away a lot from one plant and still don't know if it is going to survive. Here is a link to some photos. Bernd- You have a point there. Too many new introductions are being marketed and sold w/o having been grown to maturity. A cool looking tc sport or seedling grows for 2 or 3 years and shazzam, get it out and sell it. Once I took the time to read thru the AHS "New Registrations" booklet only to discover that in some of the descriptions, it would say 3 yr. old seedling, or a sport that was discovered a year ago. No one knows how it will perform in backyards under different growing conditions. I rather enjoy some of the rattier photos of some hostas. It shows me how one will look under under different growing conditions. Carol Brasher used to take the photos for Mary Chastain's old website. Every one of them looked breathtaking. I bought a bunch and some were indeed beautiful, but not all. Sometime I get totally taken in by a leaf photo, only to not like the plant in more or less shade/sun. I wish one couldn't register or market a hosta that hadn't been grown out for 5 years, But I am dreaming again. LL, From hort business standpoint and consumer law side ( been in business on both levels): Sorry to say, but suppose the "buyer beware" legal clause may be in effect here, unless you can substantiate that there is something in the black mulch specifically causing the problem. Although the cause and effect seems clear, if the mulch guy didn't spread it, he may have limited liability as a supplier of a consumer good. Normally they do not have to cover damages caused beyond their control. If you know the company that sold it and can speak with them, you and he might gain from the discussions about any compensation. Bruce

I know of a couple of people that have that. One a young boy and the other a man about 50. She is very brave indeed and a good role model.

For certain a role model in encouraging others with this condition not to let it stop them, but did she not compete wearing a wig (and said in an interview that she would wear a wig during public appearances)? Where's the bravery in that?

On the role model/bravery scale, I believe that standing much taller is Robin Roberts -- the morning-TV show host who went on TV and did her normal publicity and public appearance stuff bald when she lost her hair during treatment for breast cancer.

Maybe the pageant contestant felt she needed a wig to compete without being tarred by a "sympathy vote," tho she did get a lot of publicity beforehand.

And here's what just astounds me: She went on at least one TV show, talking about her baldness, without a wig. Here's what she said in an interview:

Ã¢ÂÂNo beauty queen should fit into a box and look like a Barbie every time they wake up and none of us do, as you know. So I hope to show people that you are beautiful and whatever makes you different, you should embrace it.Ã¢ÂÂ

She had a perfect place and platform to show her beauty, baldness and all (and she is a lovely looking girl--look at her photos without the wigs). But she didn't do it.

beg to differ pam...she wanted to be seen as every other woman there with hair and not garner a sympathy vote based on her condition...everyone was well aware and yes we all saw her on pre-programs...besides i'm sure, if she had been chosen as miss america, it would have been as a "normal" person, not based on one facet of her life...

i've have cancer and was bald for several months, but i didn't/still don't want to be defined as oh there is that lady who had cancer..i want to be known as a wife, mother, and grandmother...i bet miss deleware feels the same while competing, but will to continue a beautiful spokesperson for alopecia...

She had said that showing that people with alopecia can live full "normal" lives would have been her cause if she won the title. She wanted that to be her defining image. Her cause is terrific, and it's needed. But she competed with the image of something else entirely, covering her true self up as if she felt she had to pretend in order to get a real shot. She would have been equally beautiful without the wig and educated many people instead of abiding to America's standard "beauty" definition of what a Miss America should be. She wanted to have it both ways.

Maybe she wore the wig (and was bald in some shows),
to show young people that there were options, and not
to despair about being bald the rest of their lives.

Telling them, "you can't fix the baldness, but if it
torments you, you can wear wigs, etc., to make you
happier".
