Panhandle--High Wind Warning (60 mph) & Fire Warning
Comments (12)Jay, What new planting mix are you using? I want to hear about it! This year I'll be planting deep too since my soil moisture levels down deep are good, but soil moisture levels higher up are not good. I'll have to water deeply to make it work and with clay that's not always easy. That's terrible news about the fire near Santanta, KS. I hope everyone evacuates safely and that the firefighters can do their job in a safe and effective manner. With the winds today, I've felt like it was a matter of time before someone had a big fire somewhere. The sky here looks disgusting. For a while, it was a sort of a red dusty look like you get with dust storms blowing in from west Texas. Then, a couple of hours ago it started looking more like grayish-white fog or smoke from somewhere. Now it is yellow and a heavy layer of pollen is settling on the vehicles. We're going to have a whole rainbow of colors in the sky tonight and tomorrow. At least most of us here on this forum will not be endangered by the severe weather expected tonight and tomorrow. Dr. Forbes on The Weather Channel seems deeply concerned about the potential for very severe weather from all this mess, but it should start north and east of most of us. This morning, they interviewed a Storm Chaser guy in Sherman, TX, and asked where he and his bunch were headed today and he said Coffeyville, KS. He said once they got there, they'd check the latest weather data and head for wherever they thought the action would be. Around here, when we have the potential for severe weather that includes tornadoes, I just watch for the storm chaser vehicles. When those vehicles are driving up my road, that's when I head for the fraidy hole. Last year, Chris was out storm spotting with other firefighters and law enforcement officers and they ran into some storm chasers about a quarter-mile to a half-mile from our house. I heard them mention that on the radio and I headed for the cellar. About fifteen minutes later, the tornado touched down at the Red River near us and hop-scotched its way across the county, but didn't do any real damage. I don't really have to watch the local weather radar---I just watch for the storm chasers and that's all the warning I need. Dawn...See MoreWarning Warning Will Robinson
Comments (4)Don't worry, Bob. Will Robinson left long ago, after realizing that your grasp of worms, motherboards, BIOS's and needing another XP copy are matched only by your comic genius. Please don't read this -- it contains a Garden Webworm that will SATA your PCI bridge, as well as defoliate your pecans, and then your SCSI backplane will really be SOL....See MoreWarning warning! Comments (12)Thank you for this post even if I never see it in person. I wish I had known this Summer that Papa Meilland was such a desired rose with great fragrance. They had beautiful large 2gals. at Walmart for cheap. I thought if they had it, it must not be desirable. Isn't that stupid? Maybe they'll have have next year. It seems one never knows where good roses will appear. Romogen, DB is a wonderful rose for me thus far, but if my NOID is TdU, it's also well worth having. They both seem to WANT to bloom, much like Sugar Moon, even in less than ideal situations. That Malvern Hills looks gorgeous judging by Malorena's pic in another thread from today. She loves it, but she's in England. Maybe you can find some Austins like I did at Lowe's next year....See MoreHelp with luncheon menu ideas. Warning, death related
Comments (36)Since this is a buffet, one of my goals is just to have enough ubiquitous stuff that everyone likes so that picky eaters can at least find something to eat. And since the guests are going to be girlfriends I have known since most of us were toddlers together, I have a pretty good idea of their tastes. It's the small town rural WASP taste, and while I know there are plenty of exceptions (me being one) I've been around it enough to know the basics. Don't get on my case for stereotyping, I realize that not everyone fits that stereotype but like I said, I know these gals. So many people don't like fish, so I know the salmon mousse isn't going to be popular. Also anything marinated with herbs is going to be too spicy for some. Swedish meatballs will be a hit. So I've pretty much settled on a menu. Some fancy schmanzy "exotic" things for my own entertainment, with enough other stuff for the picky eaters. Asti spumanti and chilled small cans of diet and regular 7 Up and lemon lime soda water Salmon mousse on a bed of spring salad greens with maybe a few radish or carrot roses for decoration, maybe different colored sliced cherry tomatoes. Rye toasts Crudite selection with cucumber dip. Mom has a nice glass tray with the different sections so it will be fun to use that. Hummus, marinated feta and artichoke salad, home made pickled asparagus wrapped in proscuitto. Pita triangles Probably won't be the favorites but I will eat the leftovers. A cheese, salami, ham and fruit board. This will be for the picky eaters and for me to use these cute cheese cutters I bought. Edam cheese, havarti swiss, apples, pears and either grapes or blackberries. Maybe something like colby jack just in case those other two cheeses are too "out there." Again, I know what sells locally, I'm not saying Edam cheese or havarti are actually all that weird. Folks around here find something they like and stick to it, my circle isn't adventurous. I am the outlier. So was my Mom. She loved Edam and havarti. I think I will just go with something like sliced up farmhouse or Italian white bread brushed with butter and toasted to accompany the cheese board. I have a three section glass condiment tray so maybe put some pesto, mustard and mayo in that. Swedish meatballs Cookie tray Possibly a store bought bundt cake or phyllo tarts with lemon curd and jam or berries....See Morecoll_123
