Does this inspiration photo look good for a traditional new home?

If you've read some of my posts here, I've been struggling with using white cabinets vs stained (which my husband really prefers.) However, he's said "It's your kitchen, I want you to love it." (Good guy!) Anyway, although I do have concerns about longetivity/chipping, etc, with using ALL painted cabinetry, I still ADORE this kitchen that I found on Houzz. Do you think this look will go nicely with a traditional, new house? (cedar shake and stone front, wood stained doors. etc.) I am planning on using a traditional mocha stained maple cabinetry in all the baths, with chrome fixtures. Just trying to keep it classic. Do you think these wood choices and color of the kitchen coordinate nicely? Be honest... I can take it! *This week I'm going to really finalize everything with cabinet maker. I'm losing too much sleep over these decisions, ha! :)

I love it and this was one of my inspiration pics as well. I ended up going with white perimeter and blue/grey island and mudroom cubbies. I'd say to stick with what you keep going back to.... It's your kitchen. It will be beautiful.

Julia, I started adding bulbs to a few of my daylily beds where the daylilies are planted rather randomly. Since they don't bloom at the same time they can go anywhere. I didn't put in daffodils just tulips, alliums and narcissus. It really makes your gardens look nicer in the spring. I try to mark each clump with a stick or something or before you know it I am planting something over the bulbs and digging them up! I also put in many lilies although I was blessed with beetle for the first time last year so I don't know where that's going. I put shorter pot lilies around the front of the beds and taller ones mixed throughout. We just had a lady came and talk to our hort group on Tuesday about bulbs, specifically tulips. She came from Holland in 2007 where they grew tulips for the international cut flower market. She said your tulips will last much longer if you dig them up every summer and give them a rest in a cool dark place, then plant again in the fall. Too much work for me but I remember my grandmother always doing that. Every June or July her bulbs would be under her picnic table drying out. This lady also said the older varieties will last for many more years than the newer ones. Try to buy the biggest size bulbs you can. And while planting them deep protects them from frost and freezing, the deeper you put them the more energy the bulb has to use to grow stem up that far. I didn't really think of that before. It's sort of a trade-off I guess. Maybe not too deep and mulched? Many of the tulips I had around my house didn't bloom this year. I think they got frosted as the flower was about to come up. Our speaker said they should still be fine for next year, maybe better as the plant didn't waste energy on a flower yet still had leaves to send energy to the bulb. I guess I will see. The ones further out in my beds did fine and after such a mild winter I found they had multiplied. So did my lilies. Daylilies and spring bulbs are a great combination as they have separate seasons so go for it! It's like planning the same garden twice. Debbie

amandan~ I found your post interesting b/c I just recently made lists almost exactly like that out for myself! My fiance & I & our 2 dogs are currently living in a medium sized house, honestly, it's almost too big for just us, there are actually 2 rooms that never get used (except for storage) & 1 that's used very rarely. We will soon be moving to a smaller house, only about 250 sq. ft. less, but I think this will be much better for us. Anyway, I have never really liked the layout of the house we're living in now, it's not functional, & I think that's the reason I've NEVER been motivated to clean like I should. So, I have set a goal for myself when we move into our new house: I'm going to keep it clean if it kills me! :) My first plan is to not start until we are completely moved in & not bringing other stuff into the house, then go by a schedule no matter what. I only work part time, so this should be easily accomplished. The only problem I'm afraid I'll have is when my fiance is home; He works construction out of state & is gone anywhere from 4 days @ a time to 3 weeks @ a time & when he's home he wants to be gone doing fun things, not @ home cleaning. But, I'm going to try to stick to my schedule anyway even if I have to stay up a little later @ night to do it (I'm not a morning person, so don't want to get up any earlier, LOL). What I did was write everything down that needed to be done, from daily, weekly, every other week, monthly, every 3 months, every 6 months to yearly. Very few things need to be done daily (as far as I'm concerned) if you keep up w/ them. But, one of mine is empty the ashtrays (we're both smokers). I have vacuuming down for 2x a week, sweeping down for 3x a week, etc. I also made sure to put them on days that seemed the most logical, like Thurs. is trash day, so I'll take the trash out on Wed., and I spread things out so there wasn't too much on one day, I also tried to keep the weekends pretty much clear except for very small things. Anyway, I found a calendar program on my computer (that I didn't even know I had) & input all of this & just made the "appointments" recurr when I thought they should, for example: sweeping every Mon, Wed, & Fri., take inventory of supplies/groceries needed every 1st & 3rd Sat. of the month, etc. That way all I have to do is mark things off as I get them done, then when the month is over, click print & I'll have a brand new schedule for the next month. You're probably going to think I'm going over board w/ this, but I also put a binder together w/ my calendar page in it, some tips & tricks, a journal, etc... I found out about a website: flylady.net and got the idea there. You should look there for many cleaning strategies, etc. I hope we can both accomplish our cleaning goals, good luck! PS~ My fiance sounds just like your husband, he expects the house to be spotless, but still hasn't learned to pick up after himself. I've told him many times before that I refuse to follow him around cleaning up his messes! Also, when he tells me something needs to be cleaned, I remind him that he has 2 arms & 2 legs... get to it.... That usually shuts him up... LOL. I don't ask him to help a lot, but don't want him to complain about the way I'm doing it either. I have, however, forbidden him from doing laundry! :) (Sorry this is so long.) Thanks ks_toolgirl :) I feel fortunate to have been able to been privy to a tour of the home, and he was so eager to show us around. My camera is huge, it certainly wasn't hidden! And the judge knew I was taking pictures and I had told him that I knew a bunch of people that would love to see them also...he seemed to have no problem with it at all. He didn't ask me not to publicize, nor put any limits on what I could and could not photograph. I wouldn't ever want to do anything that would bring any bad events into his life, and I wouldn't want to think that my innocent actions caused him or his wife any harm....so I can see patser and karinl's points also. I actually deleted the pictures to keep the thread from disintegrating into a debate/discussion on the ramifications of posting pictures. My intent was to share my good fortune of being treated to a tour of this wonderful homestead, and to share the experience with other people of similar interests :)

This is my inspiration pic as well!! Creamy perimeter with a blue/gray distressed island. Although, I'd love to put walnut on top of the island. We'll have plenty of natural light, so I don't *think* it will be too dark.

@running_mom- I also intend to make my mudroom cabs blue/gray. I'll do a search for pictures, but if you haven't posted any, I'd love to see them as well!

I love it and yes, I think it would look great in a traditional home....go with what you love...if you don't, you will always wish you would have.

well this is one of my top 5 inspiration pics for cab colors also! But I'm with you on worrying how painted cabs will hold up, I've always had stained. IMO this style would work.

Also one of my inspirational pics! Agreed.....do not care for the layout/functionality. I opted for painted cabinets but they were custom made so chipping should not be an issue---or at least I hope it won't be!

I also love the look of this kitchen. It's a little bit country but I'm building in the rural midwest, so it's perfect for me. I think the soft yellow paint really brightens up the space.

Although I do have the paint color for the cabinets from Houzz, you do think it's just plain paint -- not glazed -- on perimetere cabinets, right? Just making sure. I can't find the island color, as it says it was a custom color with a brown glaze. Do you think the island is distressed at all? I can't really tell from the photo.

My eyes are tired, but I see paint without glaze on the perimeter. I don't see distressing on the island, but I see very heavy glaze brushing making it look rustic. Look down low on the column and end panel. IMHO, it's a bit much. You have to have a very skilled craftsman to pull that random, heavy brush marks kind of look off well without it looking cheesy.

I love it for the looks. I really love the chandelier. I think it really makes the space. The large windows behind the seating side of the island are very nice since it does not appear that there are any windows in the kitchen itself. I guess though this is just for inspiration and not the exact kitchen you will have.

p.ball2, My kitchen layout isn't exactly like this, but I do hope to have the off- white cabinets, the gray island -- and hopefully even that light fixture! (That's my favorite part of this inspiration photo!) We'll see... Hopefully I can make it look good, and similar to this! :)
