Your Opinions re: Range vs Cooktop & Wall Oven
Comments (5)I have a range and wall oven. We are in the middle of having lots of gatherings at our house. We are in our late 50s. I did get a range for one oven because I thought it would be good to have it under the hood. I use it mostly though when I a cooking for a big group and cook the long cooking things in it. I probably would buy separate pieces when I do my next kitchen. Some advantages for separate components for me would be - the ability to pick the "best" of each - the ability to place each appliance in the best place ergonomically - each piece can be replaced separately if need be I think ergonomics is one of the most overlooked things in some of the kitchens I've seen. I don't think looking ahead a little is a bad thing especially if you want to age in place. Changes in your abilities can come on suddenly. A friend of mine has issues with balance and the first thing the occupational therapist told her was no bending over to the oven....See More30 inch range vs. cooktop/wall oven vs. 36 inch range
Comments (1)I can answer the BS oven door question. My 36" BS RCS was installed two days ago (haven't used it yet, hopefully this weekend). During the burn off of the oven (high temp is 450 F for an hour) I checked how hot the oven door got, as that has been a big issue noted on these boards. On my range, the SS part of the oven door did not get hot, just a bit warm. The glass on the oven door got hotter but not that hot. What did get quite hot were the sides/edges of the oven door. I could touch the side but not for long. Definitely quite hot. Not instant burn/scald though. There are vents (or look like vents) right there so it makes sense that those areas heat up a lot. Your kids would have to press their hands up against the 2" side of the door for several seconds for it to affect them negatively. More likely a kid running around will touch the front of the door and that is not a problem, on my range at least....See MoreRange vs cooktop & wall oven
Comments (5)I second the above comments. I keep going back and forth as i love the look of a range .The other advantage for me of having a wall oven is that it is so much easier to cook with an oven which is higher up and easier to take big heavy pans in and out of the wall oven. When I look at ranges which might work for me. (I'm only looking at induction or induction and gas in one unit so my choices are much more limited.) there is always something about one of the aspects that I don't like. Like the Miele 30 inch induction range, I like the oven, the cooktop doesn't have "burners' which straddle. I also want something bigger than 30 inches. If you choose separate components you can get exactly what you want. The disadvantage is that you are limited by the cutout of the cooktop if anything goes wrong down the line with that cooktop. Your countertop material also is affected. If you have a very long countertop run, (longer than 10 feet) you will have to have a seam. With a range, your countertop will end at the range. Hope that makes sense. it could also be more expensive to get separate components....See MoreWall oven and cooktop or range for a tight space?
Comments (6)Thanks for the comments and things to chew over, everyone! To answer some of the questions-- We can't do a wall oven further to the right of the current stove location as that's a relatively small entryway, due to the fact that the fridge is on the opposite wall and can't be moved or recessed. Unfortunately we are locked into our configuration, so trying to do the best with what we have. At least either way I know we'll end up with a more eye-pleasing setup than we've have now! (I must admit though I'd really love to have seen what the setup looked like when the house was built in the 50s.) Buehl, actually we're both quite short, 5'2" and 5'4". But even though I've seen some setups with the wall oven below the cooktop, I hadn't considered how low the oven controls would be. Do-able for us, but perhaps a little bit annoying. And then conversely because I'm short, I don't love the idea of having knobs along the side as the ones towards the back might be a bit of a reach for me. I'll try to find a setup in person before committing, though currently seems like we're leaning away from the idea at this point. We're not interested in moving to induction. I don't have a huge thing against it but my spouse does most of the cooking and put a foot down. I'm getting my biggest desires in this kitchen in almost every way, so I'm happy to stick with gas for that reason alone. ;) wdccruise, it's almost the researching separate appliances and finding two separate things that will go together that both have good reviews that kills the idea for me. It's hard enough trying to find one appliance. I also can't get the nagging feeling out of my head about how much more something truly built-in feels limiting if you run into issues down the line and need to replace. Whereas the beauty of a slide-in range is that it's just that, slide-in. I can change it out easily in the future should I have to. (Not that I want to! But I know nothing these days will last like the older appliances, which is the literal only reason I'm slightly sad to get rid of the 90s tank of a range we have currently. But good grief after almost 8 years in our house I hate looking at that ugly thing.) Beth H. it's this comment that really has me thinking: Since this is prob the last time you'll be redoing it while you live here, spend the extra amount and do it the best you can and exactly what you want. in the long run you'll be happier. Ultimately I think if we're going the extra mile, the extra mile and the thing we really both would be happiest with wouldn't be the wall oven/cooktop setup, but in actuality a pro-style range. As wdccruise noted it's really only a couple extra inches off the face of the cabinetry, even in a small space. I'm probably worrying too much about that area. I still love the idea of the sleekness of the look of a wall oven, though my spouse loves it less than I do. And even still, when I picture things in my head that will make this our perfect kitchen for this space, I'm really picturing a range. It's been really interesting the thought processes you go through in a kitchen reno. We did our bathroom several years ago and that was a complete gut job, but a much smaller scale obviously, and so many less things to think about. Phew!...See Morecevamal
