free-standing glass block backsplash?

12 years agoThis picture is in a bathroom, but still the same idea - freestanding glass blocks stacked 4 high on a narrow divider between a tub and shower.
I see no reason why a similar arrangement wouldn't work in a kitchen setting.

Comments (25)oh mayflowers forgot to say that I like the idea of adding cabinets to back of peninsula area but was also thinking of having two backless bar stools with black leather seats there as well. Will have to think about the wainscoating and now that I look closely the area could use an update and it is scuffed up. the more we look the more we see that needs help with this house Ugh thanks so much Here is the living room, my carpenter is fashioning a pine wood free floating mantle as we speak, it will have oil on it and natural tones. We have sofa facing the fireplace that's a thin cordoroy material in a light blue/green and plan to have an accent chair against the other wall (the staircase wall) with perhaps some type of server or china cabinet over there, dining area is too small for china cabinet but might be able to have a behind the sofa credenza (for more storage) we also plan to have an area rug in front of the sofa. I am looking for a gray one with texture if I can find one. what do you think of those ideas? Comments (15)Just found this thread (delicatus search). I just bought Delicatus Brown this past week. Busy granite!!! So, for my backsplash, I'm *hoping* to use Jeffrey Court Chapter 12 in French Creama (an off whitish/beigy color). I'm thinking of the 6x6's on a diagnol; and behind my sink area having an outline of box with an arched top and filled in with matching 1x1 glass tiles. Around this arched box (again, in the area above the sink) instead of the 6x6's, I want to use the 2x3 subway tiles in a brick pattern. So it will be done all in tone-on-tone but with the tile being the pattern, instead of different colors or borders. Anyway, I am going to wait too until I get the granite installed before purchasing the tile. Comments (8)Hi aloopylife, That is a nice kitchen and will be fabulous with your personal touch! I love that you are going to eliminate the upper cabinets over the peninsula and also just taking it out altogether would be a great option if you can do it so that the walkway into the kitchen is more open. I recently moved some cabinets in my laundry room and there was hardwood under them that at first I thought would be a terrible problem to match since it remained unfinished but it was easy to fix and I did it myself! Here is a compromise position that you might consider. I don't blame you for not wanting to rip out the whole kitchen so you might consider just replacing the upper cabinets in pre-finished white. That way you could have them go to the ceiling if that's your preference. Then you could just replace the doors on the lowers in the same pre-finished white and then just have the lower cabinet boxes painted. I am not sure how cost effective this would be but if you really don't want to pull all the cabinets out and are happy with the upgrades to the lowers it's an option. As to the backsplash I really like your second example and think it would look fabulous with your Carrera marble. If you think it might be too much of a good thing you could always put it in just a focal point area such as over the range or wherever you want it along with the white subway tiles. Fall back position to subway white tiles is always a good option as well and probably much more budget friendly. They also have subway Carrera tiles that are pretty and look great with your counter choice which is gorgeous. I have it in an upper guest bath and it's heartbreakingly beautiful. It feels so nice too. When we priced just doing doors for the cabinets it was sort of shocking how much it was!!! If you don't want to do all of them I have seen some kitchens that left some of them in place while changing the others. I don't think I have ever seen cathedral done on both the uppers and lowers as in your new home. Here they usually put them on the top only. If only they had done that! You could have kept the bottom cabinets as they are and only replaced the top doors or cabinets. Good luck! It's going to be really pretty even if you keep the cabinets as is and paint, it will be a huge update with the other changes and I love the idea of taking down the cabinets and peninsula in that area. Comments (10)I don't have the range yet. I was looking at the GE Profile. The new laminate is in. The problem is that the laminate backsplash is about 1 or 1-1/2" thick and seems that it would look odd with a thin backsplash between the laminate behind the stove. I'm wondering if I should build up something to match thickness. I do really want a backsplash there, not just paint because I do splatter behind the stove. It's the one place that I want a full backsplash. The wavy glass isn't hard to clean, it's big waves and would wipe easily, which is the selling feature for me, besides looking clean and streamlined. I was also considering a sheet metal backsplash, either bronze or stainless. Maybe that would be easier to work around. The alternative to the slide in would be a free standing range with control riser in the back. That's what's currently there, and so there's no issue with the laminate splash on either side. I really don't like that ALL the new ranges have the large burners in the front. I cook lots of big pots of stews and sauces. At least the slide in range with controls in the back would give me a little buffer in keeping the hot stuff away from the children. At least I've realized this before purchasing so I have time to figure things out....See Morepitpat

12 years agoHow about just a glass back splash? Glass block is about 3" thick, do you want to give up 3" of counter top? Glass can be used very creatively, and can be great decoration. Pattern glass was used in the illustrated back splash for an interesting effect.
Paint the wall the color you want. Have your glass shop come out and measure for glass panels. Install them with clear silicon, just 5 dabs per panel will do it âÂ" one in each corner and one in the middle.
We have even gotten creative on occasion and install LED lights behind the glass -- it's great, shadowless counter top lighting.
If you want just a 4" splash, have the top edge of the glass polished so no one gets cut.

12 years agoLol, fori. I knew I couldn't be the only one thinking of this, so I was surprised that I didn't find much online.
I will probably go for the glass panel. Reedy/seeded/rainy glass would be great. We have a glass shop literally around the corner from us, so I'll ask them if they do those specialty glasses. They actually made us a new panel for our jalousie window for free, so they are good people to deal with.
xoldtimecarpenter, those ideas would be lovely, but we want to keep this simple and cheap, since it's only a temporary solution. We're also not giving up any counter space, since the backsplash will be installed on the narrow strip behind the sink (pic below).
We have lived with the sink like this for 11 years now, b/c we keep putting off the kitchen remodel, and it's driving me crazy. We've managed OK by being careful with the water, but it does occasionally spray back there, and sometimes water pools up on that strip and then drips down. The reason we HAVE to put up a backsplash now is temporary fix #2: putting a cabinet (the white one in the upper right corner of the picture) on the other side of the sink, which will be almost flush with the countertop. That will allow us to fit a bigger table at the back of the kitchen so my boys can eat all their meals but dinner in the kitchen (we just redid our dining room and are using cloth tablecloths instead of vinyl, and the messes are driving me crazy). The paint on that white cabinet flakes easily, plus we will be putting stuff on it, so we can't have water splashing back there anymore.
Thanks for all the ideas! I hope DH is up for this DIY project! And in case anyone is interested, the faucet is a Kohler (at least, I think it is). We love it. It also has a spray setting, and it's a pull-down.
