Is a baby Dedication the same as a Christening?

I received an invite to my ex boss' baby's Dedication. They go to a Christian church but I'm not sure I've ever heard of a dedication, just a christening.

Does anyone know if it's the same thing?

In some religions they believe a baby shouldn't be christened/baptised until they are old enough to make their own decision as to what religion they want to be and that's usually around 10 yrs old.Hence the dedication!! HTH

In my experience, a dedication was stating that the parents promised to raise the child in the ways and knowledge of their church. There was not a specific Godmother/Godfather named, but all members of the church agreed to "guide" the child during their formative years. This was many years ago, I was still a teen, but imagine it is the same today.

Ahhhh home! With two fat bellies! Mrs. Harrell is an ANGEL! I learned more from her in the first 5 minutes of meeting her than two days of hem hawing with the breeders of my babies. I did find out that Pipp couldn't possibly be full pygmy as she has a half white body (Which is really totally fine, they are just pets. But that does show me that the breeders have no idea what they are talking about, period). Mrs. Harrell looked at my bottles and nipples and said they were all fine. She had me throw out my rolled oats and let me know that alfalfa hay was ok (But not ideal) for the girls but if I ever got a boy it had to go. She gave me a big bag full of what she feeds and the label off her bag and told me where to get it (The girls thought it was yummy by the way). Then she looked at me, rubbed Izzy's horn bud's and said.... "These have to go, that's a safety issue". So she told me we'd take care of that after the girls ate. She went inside and brought out two full mountain dew bottles, one with a pritchard teat and took Izzy from me. (She also inspected the girls and said they were lucky I was so persistent because they looked to be ok and not literally starving, lol).She sat down on her steps and sat Izzy beside her with her butt to the back of the step. Gently she wrapped an arm around Izzy, pulling her into her side and squeezed on each side of her mouth, pushing the lips forward to accept the nipple. It went right in but Izzy seemed to be having issues with the nipple. Mrs. Harrell stopped and said she thought she had just the trick. She disappeared inside and returned with a lambs teat (A red rubber one) and switched out the nipples. She put the nipple in Izzy's mouth and Izzy began to suck, still half chewing but better. Mrs. Harrell pulled the nipple forward slowly as if she might take it away and Izzy went NUTS! All of a sudden it was on like Donkey Kong! Izzy sucked down about 6 ounces in a wink of an eye and was fat as a little tick! Pipp followed the same procedure and then fell asleep, standing up, with the nipple in her mouth, lol. After that, and tears of joy from me, I followed Mrs. Harrell back to her little barn and she gave both the girls a shot. She said they had to get a tetanus before they could be disbudded and she didn't have it by itself so she just plain out vaccinated them for me! She stuck Pipp in the little box, shaved her head (She didn't cry or struggle, what a good little girl!), and I stepped out and BOOM, finished. She handed me Pipp with two round holes and a yellow head, lol. Izzy went next and now they have matching little heads (Ouch!). We put the girls back in their big crate and talked and talked. She gave me the mountain dew bottles with the lambs nipples FULL of goats milk from her goats. THEN as if she hadn't done enough already, she went inside and brought back out TWO FULL GALLONS of her goats milk! This woman had no intention of asking me for one red cent! All I had on me was 15 measly dollars and knowing I owed her a CRAPLOAD more than that, I humbly handed her 10 bucks (I needed the 5 for gas, remember she was an hour and a half away, lol, squeezed her neck, and told her that no words could express my gratitude. I will be returning to NC Promised Land with the girls for their next round of vaccines and wormings, etc... She gave me the number of a lady more local to me to purchase milk from if I didn't want to put them on cow's milk (Which she said would work just fine). I also offered to tag along to shows with her when I can so that I can help her however she needs it. I have shown dogs over half of my life and I know how horribly difficult it can be to venture to a show ALONE with even TWO dogs! When I return to see Mrs. Harrell I'll bring a sufficient amount of moolah with me for her trouble. This woman is unbelievable, her heart as pure as they come and a gorgeous little herd of Nigerians to boot. Thank you to everyone that so graciously helped out a newbie and stranger. You can make the pacifiers by laying one lifesaver on the table, turn the other lifesave up so it sits in the hole of the first lifesaver, glue with the glue gun. The lifesaver standing up will be the one to put the ribbon through. Once it is dry, turn it over and glue the jellybean in the opposite center. These aren't for eating, just decorations. For the centerpiece, I would glue them onto skewers or floral sticks and stick them into the flower arrangements. You could still tie a small ribbon on the bottom of the pacifier. I saw a really neat pacifier the other day on Donny Deutch show. It was a pacifier attached to the back head of a teddy bear. It was perfect because the baby could hold onto the bear while enjoying his pacifier. B

Dee thank you so much for posting. I love your room! The white with the little pops of bold colors is great for a kids space...but really, an adult would be happy in that cozy land as well. Lav ummm ya, when china land is next clean I'll snap pics lol. I have been so busy setting up stocking city (aka my sewing room) that I kind of let him be a nut...I think he dumped every bin on the floor! Mary Lu, you are right. Being "done"with the whole journey actually brings a great deal of peace to our world. Les, I really can't do trundles in the room because of the way the beds have to sit in the roofline (the room has a gable that juts out where the beds would go. All of the other walls are small, much like dees or have doors that would be blocked. As to tv or computers, right now my mindset is that I don't like them in a Childs bedroom. I may someday change my feelings about that, but for now I don't want young kids surfing where they won't be seen, particularly allowing other parents kids to do in my home without knowing how the parents feel about it. My son has an iPad, and I would imagine that if other kids are one day staying (older) and their parents are ok with that, they'll probably have their own devices for that stuff. I do let ds's friends use mine when supervised but never where we can't sort of monitor what they are doing. But my son is only five. I couldn't have imagined when he was born that he would know how to surf u tube at four lol so I'll reassess as time goes by. As to the bed options...we can always change those options as tine goes on and the kids grow. I can't see the monkeys being my forever decor lol. For the majority of our sons guests, I won't encourage disappearing into the room though. It really is more for sleeping and alone time. We will let the much larger play room grow with the wii etc near a space we hang out so I know what they are up to.

Thank you, all, for your opinions and comments. But, I guess I left out a detail or two when I originally posted... This is the couple's first child. I've sort of gotten stuck with helping with the shower, although I would prefer not to be involved other than to purchase a gift (which I've already done) and attend the shower. I'm also paying for the cake. All of us who are working on this would prefer that everyone be responsible for either purchasing their own gift, or organizing their own little group if they want to do a group gift. I've been tasked with designing the flyer -- which, to me, should simply say when and where the shower is being held, and that it's a baby boy (because that fact is known). But, several folks have already asked "who is collecting the money for a group gift," so I don't know if there's a way to avoid it altogether. And, in the past when someone has collected money for a group gift, no matter what the occasion, the flyer has always named the person who is collecting the money. And anyone who has worked there for at least a year (this coworker has been with us more than 10 years) knows that money is collected for group gifts, so having it on a flyer isn't going to be any big surprise. "I think putting up a flyer is tacky and I'd be embarrassed if I were the mother-to-be." It is quite common where I work for flyers to be put up announcing various events like retirement parties, birthday celebrations, etc. I really don't think anyone considers the flyers to be tacky. Yes, I have a concern whether saying anything about a minimum donation amount being tacky (which is why I started this thread)... But, those retirement party flyers all have menu choices and dollar amounts on them and something about how the money is for the food and gift for the honoree, and I've never heard anyone complain about them... And as I said a moment ago, the coworker has seen plenty of these flyers in the past 10 years. WildChild, I agree with everything you said. But, that still doesn't stop folks from asking who's collecting the money for a group gift... I think that I'm not going to put anything on the flyer about a group gift or donations; and when folks ask me "who's collecting the money" I'll just reply that if they want to go in with someone else on a gift that it's a fine idea, but they will need to discuss it with whomever they decide to go in with...

I think a Christening is Catholic and dedication is a generic Christian event where you promise to raise the child in a Christian household. I have never been to a Christening before but have been to a few dedications.

Please correct me if I'm wrong....

Okay, that would make sense.

I went to buy a card the other day and all I could find was Baptism and Christening and didnt want to buy the wrong thing so I wanted to make sure I understood the difference before I got anything.

Well I'm surprised Hallmark doesn't have a card for a Dedication because they have one for every other event!

Christening is not a Catholic thing since I was Christened and I did not grow up Catholic. I believe Baptism is a Catholic thing for babies. In any case, baptism/christening/dedication are all the same thing.

Steph, a dedication is a Christian event where you promise to raise the child in a Christian household. As for Christening and baby baptisms, I really don't know much about them.
You can probably find a Dedication card at a Christian book store.

In the Church I belong to (Nazarene) we Dedicate babies.It's a ceremony dedicating the baby to God and as Ellie said promising to raise the child in the ways and knowledge of their church. Our Pastor also anoints the baby with oil.I have never been to a christening so I don't know about that.

Christening and Dedication are absolutely not the same thing. Christening involves baptism. Dedication (at least in all of the churches I know about) does not involve baptism. During a dedication, the parents are prompted to answer questions that show that they are planning on raising the child in a Godly home. Often the congregation is prompted to agree to help (i.e., it takes a village). Some churches also present the parents with a tiny Bible for the baby/child. And a prayer is said. Absolutely nothing remotely involving baptism is included.

Thanks everyone, I understand it now. At least I know not to get a Christening card! There's a Christian bookstore not far from me, I'll check there for a Dedication card.

In a Dedication it is the Parents who are dedicating themselves to raise the child in the beliefs of their church, and the congregation voices agreement to nurture the child. Always in my experience the couple is given a small Bible to read to the child as they grow. Often Dedication services are done on Mother's Day, and the mother is given a rose.

Grandparents often attend Dedication services, even coming from out of town for the occasion.

I have never seen or heard of a Dedication card. And I've never known of anyone giving gifts at that time. Can't say it hasn't happened, just never heard of it. :)

Dedication has no connection to baptism or christening.

Up here its exactly as Kathi said. One church in town my GF's son was dedicated, then you will be confirmed at a later date when you are old enough to make that decision. But I have no idea how old "old enough" is! LOL

stephmc72, that was perceptive of you to pick up that there (might be) (is) a difference. Using the wrong term could cause hurt feelings -- it's nice of you to care :-)

In the interests of education, not "discussion" LOL -- per my own religious upbringing, baptism refers to the washing away of sin, and is done to at any age, infant to whatever, but is only done once. We have no separate dedication ceremony. I *do* understand that other denominations have different views, and that's okay with me personally. Just wanted to share one more perspective.

I go to a Christian church,,,a dedication is just that,,,we dedicate our childs life to God and promise to raise them to love and serve the Lord.It is not the same as a Baptism or Christening.

Donna Loomis, Christening does not always involve baptism. I was christened as a baby. In the church I grew up in babies were christened and you did not get baptized until you were old enough to understand what you were doing, usually as a teenager.

Baptism or christening involves the use of water. Dedicating does not. Baptism is immersion and christening is sprinkling.

In the christian church that my parents brought me up in,a dedication and christening were one and the same..we gave christening cards,but rarely gifts. The babies also wore a christening dress.
Having said that,maybe the customs are different in the US than in Canada.

I was baptised as a Catholic when I was a baby, and I was not immersed.

I was Christened at the Baptismal font in the Anglican Church when I was 1 year old and the rest of my siblings were done at the same time. We are Confirmed when we are young teenagers. Catholics are Confirmed at a younger age.

I have never heard of a Dedication before so I am learning something new.

A dedication, in the church to which I belong (American Baptist), is exactly as said, above, by caroline1947 and a couple others. We dedicate infants, meaning that the parents dedicate the child to God and vow to raise him/her in a Christian home, etc., etc. We practice "believer's Baptism", meaning that when a person understands what Baptism is and means, and believes, and can, on their own, commit to it, they do the study and ceremony. herefore, "believer's Baptism". That "typically" occurs in the early to mid teen years, but I've seen it all the way up into 60s and 70s, even from some people who were Baptised in a different religion as an infant but wanted to recommit based upon their own beliefs.

I agree - for us, anyway, a baptism and dedication are absolutely not the same thing.

I was dedicated as an infant. My brother was dedicated the same day, but he was 5 years old. My parents hadn't had him dedicated prior to that because they hadn't been associated with a church. So we were "done" the same day :-). I was Baptised on Easter Sunday - I think I was 13. I don't remember when my brother was Baptised, but I'm sure it was somewhere between 13 & 15.

Sounds like there are a whole lot of similarities and differences in how the various Christian religions do things. As far as I'm concerned, no rights or wrongs - just different ways of accomplishing the same thing (pretty much).

And no, despite a zillion (or so) dedications that I've witnessed, I've never seen a special card, and typically not an occasion for a gift. It would be very appropriate, though, to send a nice note.

That's not what Baptism is in my denomination. It's not that they are old enough to decide what religion they want to be, it's that they're old enough to decide that they are going to commit themselves and their lives to God.
