My sister is on her way home from the hospital

She had her lumpectomy this morning a.m. and is on her way home now. They took all her lymph nodes as well, and she is really sore and sleepy. It is just one step closer to her being breast cancer free. I couldn't be happier for her. She is 48 and this is her first surgery ever. Even her chemo port was put in just under a local.

She said the oddest thing to me though....."Thanks for the plant!" Ummmm, I didn't send a plant. She read the card to me, and it did not even ring a bell. I knew it was just day surgery, and I would have sent it to her house. Now I am baffled. Maybe I need some of that good morphine!!

LOL@Trin! I need morphine some days, too! I'm gonna say healing prayers for your sis. Bless her heart - she is lucky to be having her first surgery ever at 48 but not lucky to have cancer. I wonder who sent the plant?!

Very interesting. It's great that you have those fences. I'm assuming roses in your zone generally don't become monsters, so that's a point in your favor. And you can grow some smaller ones in big pots on the deck. You're doing a lot of vertical growing. But do at least allow the recommended spacing. It will save having to dig them up and move them next year. Here's what happens when plants grow. 4/14/07: 9 rose bushes planted 5' on center (too close in Florida) and probably as many perennials in a 30' long triangular bed 6/26/07: Growing nicely. 4/4/08: Some roses shifted, one needs to come out, no perennials left except a couple of new daisies, and I think I'm in for some heavy trimming in the future to keep these from encroaching on each other. They're touching now after only a year. At least, being a guy, your back is better built for digging the same hole 2 or 3 times. Mine isn't. It's getting tired. Try to do it right the first time. Greg, Thanks for the well wishes. I do feel like I have been thru quite a bit, but I just keep telling myself "There's always someone out there who has it far worse than me." I try to always have that attitude. After both surgeries I realized how much more difficult my life could be if I permanently lost the use of my legs or my back. I'll tell ya what, I have my good days and my bad days but in general I try to keep myself in a positive mood. I see that you also like the plumeria forums on Face Book! It was nice to be able to put a face with a name. I especially like being able to see all your plumeria pictures there. I need to invest in a good camera so I can take the same kind of pictures! Anyhow, when I do find myself having days when I am in a lot of pain, I like to go to Face Book(and also here!) so I can see all the great plumeria pictures. They really do cheer me up a lot. Hi Qaguy, I will be contacting you soon. I am trying to get my hands on as many cuttings as I can right now. Reason being, they give me something to enjoy and to look forward to! I really enjoy watching cuttings throw out there first roots, leaves, inflos, and BUDS! Hi Mona, The way I see it right now is that ANY day is a good day as long as I am not a patient in the hospital that is!! Hi Irun, LOL, at least there is someone who knows how I feel! I am so glad to be off of the steroids! I was getting them 3 times a day, everyday I was there! Tomorrow I have to be at my first follow up. I have mixed emotions in regards to this appointment. In one hand, I know that there going to remove all 75 staples, and that right there will make me feel much better. The reason I don't want to go is because the nuerosurgeon's office is 45 minutes away and I have to ride in a car up there and back, not including the wait in his waiting room, and then the exam room! You know it doesn't matter if you have had major back surgery or not, and in all fairness, there could be a dozen other patients waiting to be seen, and there appointment could also be a follow up after there surgery. I am sorry that your stepdaughter is having problems. I would not let ANYONE near my child if they threatend to harm them. You said yor SD admitted to trying to poison your child. I would keep my child away from her. I know that you are a family and love your husband and SD, but, SHE TRIED TO POISON YOUR CHILD. Because of problems we have had, my husband and I have agreed that when his daughter comes to visit, my son and I will go visit friends, or he will take her somewhere with him. I know it sounds drastic, but this is the only thing that will work for us right now. I wish you and your family the best.

Powerful thoughts of healing to your sister. I think it's possible she was so groggy, she thought she was talking to the person who sent the flowers. I was like that after surgery. My poor sister sat by my hospital bed for a couple hours when I asked for some of her milk shake. She wasn't drinking anything. LOL

Morphine can make you hallucinate so maybe there is no plant ( : I hope she gets better soon and beats the cancer.

Thanks for all your thoughts and support. Being the older sister, I wish I could have the cancer instead of her.
We have a really strong bond, and when one of us is down, it just screws us up emotionally. I would never let on to her, but I have missed several days of work being "sick at heart" I literally could not go to work I was so scared and upset for her.
I am not afraid to die, but I am scared of being left alone.

So glad it is over for her. She needs a body pillow. It is hard to get comfortable after any kind of breast surgery.

Remind her to use her arm on the side they took the nodes, so she won't get lymphodema. Our daughter has it very badly from hers..it's painful, but really improtant.

Sending good thoughts and prayers for her. I went through the lumpectomy and radiation 6 1/2 years ago, so I hope that she will be as fortunate. The one thing that helped me was following the diet they gave me after the surgery. It said to have lots of good quality protein - eggs, chicken, turkey. I can't remember what else. The diet helped me heal quickly. I'm sure that they will give her good advice. Another thing that helped me is that I started swimming when the surgeon said I could. Swimming slowly helped to stretch the chest and arm muscles.

Hugs to you.......I understand how you feel. I would rather be sick than my sister also. My thoughts and prayer for your sister for a quick recovery.

((((Trin)))) I'm a big sister too. My sister had breast cancer at 42 years of age. She opted for the lumpectomy, and chemo too. She had a port also. That was 15 years ago, and she remains cancer free. And my oldest daughter caught hers at a very early stage. Breast calcification, she opted for a mastectomy, with reconstruction at that time. This was 2 years ago next month. Keep the faith. Get your yearly checks. Early detection gives you the best chance at beating this monster.

Glad she is heading home. That is the best place to be.
Tell her about my mom. She survived 2 breast cancers (non related one on each breast) and rectal cancer.
Mom is 75 now and going strong.
It's scary but lots of people get better!

Glad your sis has this past her and I wish her the best with the chemo port etc. She's probably just confused from all the meds.
