Frustrated with my sister and her mother in law...

Last year my sister's mother in law decided that she would like to take her grandkids (my sisterÂs kids) for two weeks in the summer. My nephew wasn't able to come but my niece was excited to come for a visit. She was 12 at the time. They live in Idaho and their grandma and my husband and I live in Nevada, we are about 8 hours away from my sister and her family.

She met my sister in Salt Lake on a Saturday and brought my niece home with her. That Monday I get to work and I have a million messages on my phone asking that I call my DH or "grandma" ASAP. I am panicking thinking something has happened to my niece. I call "grandma" and she said that she forgot she had to go out of town on a business trip and she's going to be dropping my niece off at my work! I live 45 minutes from my work so it's not like I could even take her to my house.

We did the best we could and made the best out of the situation and we had a great time with her. It made it a little rough on us because of our schedules but we did it. Her grandma picked her up Saturday night on her way through and took her back to Salt Lake the next day.

This last Sunday she picked up both kids in Salt Lake to spend the next two weeks with her. My nephew is out at the ranch with his grandpa and my niece is here in town. She called me Monday while her grandma was at work and asked if I could please bring her lunch that her grandma didn't have anything in the house to eat. I am thinking she's being a spoiled 13 year old and doesn't want to fix herself anything, so I run and grab us a sandwich and take it to her. She wasn't kidding. There wasnÂt a loaf of bread, a gallon of milk...nothing.

I have taken her out to eat for lunch every day this week. I talked to her yesterday and she was in tears all she does is sit around the house and watch tv all day then at night when her grandma gets home from work she orders them something for dinner then she goes in her room and reads leaving my niece alone again!

Needless to say I am picking her up after work tonight, I called off work tomorrow to take her swimming and she will be with me the rest of the time.

I cannot believe this woman and I am a little hacked at my sister!

Oh wow. Thank God you're there. You need to tell your sister this, every single bit of it so next time your sister will think twice before sending the little girl to grandma's house!

Or does your sister already know about this and doesn't care?

Is she staying at your house now? Sheesh, this reminds me when my mom and her husband would go out of town for the weekend (I was a teenager) and they left me NO food at all to eat. So I'd live off cupcakes & pop I'd buy at Quik Trip. grrrr.

Let your sister know you love her kids, but YOU haven't invited them to come and stay with you.

Seems to me that if your niece doesn't want to stay at the ranch with Grandpa maybe she would prefer to stay home?

I'm wondering just where this little 'vacation' idea came from in the first place. Are you sure it was Grandma's idea? Maybe her son's? Or your sister's?

aren't relatives strange? i just came home from my husbands aunts funeral. this elderly couple came to visit us every sunday, we attended all the family functions they had, why just because they were just nice! my husband told me when we first married that his mother didn't like her brother and his wife (this elderly couple) and that it wouldn't be a good idea to be friendly with them, well i told him i would like to be the judge of that, and so time went and we were all good friends. when Al passed away 5 months ago they were there and where was his sister, screaming at me about what kind of funeral she wanted and don't ask for any money at all for expenses, she and her sisters stood at one side of the graveside service and snubbed their noses at the funeral HE wanted. i was late getting to the funeral home today and had to stand with many others in the foyer, but there was that sister in law right there with the family (if they only knew how evil these people spoke of them, they would have been tossed out on their #####!). when i went and spoke to the family and gave my condolenance, the sister in law snook out of the funeral home, she didn't even say hi or anything. i would never let that mil come to my home, meet her in a public place, and perhaps you could have a friend come as well, also tell her that you have to leave at a specific time right from the beginning, say i have to get the trolly at 500 pm or else we'll be in trouble or something like that. get caller id, best thing a person can get. my mil passed away 15 months before Al did, she was a mean woman, my kids would receive used old things and the others would get designer things, her philosphy was they're rich and your not. on the other hand i am glad that my sil didn't speak to me, who know;s what might have come out of my mouth. As a friend said to me, they are not your relatives anymore! and it's a good thing you can choose your friends. I am sorry for your loss and know just how you feel! debbie

This is one of the most disturbing posts I've ever read here - in fact, it's been haunting me since it first appeared. I don't know which is worse -- the idea that you molested your wife's sister, or the idea that you didn't and she claims you did. Either way, it's a horrible, awful mess. For what it's worth, I find it very hard to believe that a young woman who behaves anywhere near appropriately would have been molested by 2 of her 3 brothers-in-law... Of course, there's no way to prove either side of the story, since there wouldn't have been any witnesses. So it all boils down to a question of character, history and reputation. If your character is above reproach, your story should be believed (though perhaps quietly, since it's likely D is emotional, dramatic and vocal) and this should all blow over in a few months. If your character hasn't always been above reproach, let this situation serve as a warning that you need to monitor your behavior a little more carefully, and that in the future, you should not to let D get within 10 feet of you. Without knowing any of the parties involved, I would have a tendency to believe that there was some truth to each side, with exaggerations and distortions likely on both sides.

Geez, that is so grade-school. No you did nothing wrong. It is only natural you are closer to the the sister that includes you and her brother in her family plans. It's probably better you weren't invited up north, I have a good idea that you would have been probably made to feel out of your element anyway. Why would your sister's mother-in-law have forgotten she had a business trip that weekend, have nothing to eat in her house and have her granddaughter visit with nothing for her to do?

Something is not right.

I'm happy to hear you'll be rescuing your niece tonight.

I'm hoping niece or nephew never have to spend two weeks there ever again. SOMETHING isn't right for sure.

Your sister and your niece are lucky to have you. Has you niece called her Mom to let her know what's happening. Your sister should call you and give you a big thanks.

Wow! Unbelievable! Your niece is very fortunate to have someone like you to ask for help. Her grandmother appears to be more than a little irresponsible. Why have the child visit when she is unable to provide even ordinary care? Have you tried to contact your sister? Even if she is aware of her mother-in-law's "shortcomings" .... that little girl needs to be rescued.

I'm so glad you stepped in and took good care of this girl. IMO, when a Grandparent has a Grandkid visit, they should spend the time mostly togetjher and the Grandmpther should plan activities, like swimming, beach trips, picnics, even just going to the movies. Leaving the kid hhome alone with no food in the house is inexcudable.

Makes me wonder though, could the grandmother be coming down with Dementia?
