opinions on granite choices PLEASE!

Hi all! Can you give me your opions on granite choices. I have cherry cabinets and a small cream island. I know cherry looks best with dark green or black but for various reasons I do not want to go that route. I can not afford soapstone for budget reasons. I would appreciate your input. Thanks so much.

Hi marybeth,

You can't go wrong with #1 or #2. I would want to see the slabs mind you. What is sample #1 called? I like it the best at least on the small sample you have. I don't like the tropical brown at all with your cabinets. Do you have the cabinets in yet? Any photos. I am anxous to see and I think it will be a lovely combination!

i like them in the order you have shown....first pic is my favorite!!!! i prefer the lighter color granites over the tropical brown.....

I like both granites and both cabinet stains, but have to agree that the Uba Tuba is livelier and more interesting. The Tropical Brown is very nice, but will be low key and monochromatic in your kitchen. So what do you see as being your kitchen's eye-catcher? With Tropical Brown, you can have (might need) a busy backsplash and killer light fixtures. If you go with the brown granite, I think I prefer the darker cabinet stain since it's a more consistent monochromatic look. Then for your accents, play with textures and shapes more than colors? With the Uba Tuba, your kitchen could take more dramatic accents, but wouldn't necessarily need them. If you go with the green, I'd probably choose the lighter cabinets just to pick up on the golden tones, then accent with brilliant golden yellow and/or red. The slate's a great floor in either case -- but be prepared for the huge color variation. (Or to pay substantially more for slate that's more consistently colored.)

forget soapstone and marble unless you can live with slight marring or do the work to correct stains and scratches. granite is much easier... you seal it maybe once a year - wipe on/wipe off - simple. My cabinets are white and so are my appliances. My floor will be porcelain pietra romano which is a sandy taupe with darker veins running thru it to tie into a darker granite. Sink will be stainless. Won't decide on hardware until last moment: either brushed nickel or black iron or ORB.... ha. babbie, both stones will look pretty cuz they're granite and you'll love them but the darker will give your kitchen more WOW/POP factor and the neutral one will blend. I'd go for the wow. again, personal taste. I'm sure you'll be happy with either stone.

I have personally had had your flooring and loved it, the color brings a nice warmth to any home. However, they can take over and dominate as well. I somewhat counteracted that as I had many works of hanging art...and years ago eggplant walls here and there as well as golden yellow. Another thought is to look at some mid gray shades without a lot of movement for countertops with maybe small barely noticeable streaks of floor color or none at all, thatÂs what I did and with that you will have more options on paint colors and decorating. If you have a dominate floor and a dominate countertop maybe some of the other lovely things in your home will be overlooked.

Ahh, socalthreems, that would be FANTASTIC if you could post pictures or a link. If you don't want to publicize them here I can always send you a personal email address. We are still at least several months from ordering, so there is plenty of time. Our design doesn't have a ton of uppers, but we really liked the beadboard uppers in our last kitchen. Glass won't work for us - we're really bad about keeping our cabinets neat (DW wants everything hidden). I definitely hear the preferences for the flat drawers, but given the number of drawers we have (and the various sizes (we have one 2 drawer stack (so large frontal area), several 3 drawer stacks and at least one four drawer stack) I think the kitchen would look to plain without the beadboard drawer front. Thanks for the cabinet info, buehl. Our KD uses Ultracraft and Bertch custom (which is way beyond our price range). While we have a Dynasty dealer here (one of the local lumber yards) we really want to stay with the KD. He's done a fantastic job and he's a family friend not to mention one of the top KDs in the area. I spent some time looking at the other Ultracraft styles, and none of them "call" to me the way beadboard does. I just wish I could find more pics of beadboard kitchens. It doesn't seem to be that popular a stlye (which appeals to me from a "uniqueness" perspective).

#1 is by far my favorite. I love the intense black and bigger splotches of cream. The Santana is too blah...the colors seem washed out, and I miss the cream in the dark one.

Both of the first ones have a lot of gray in them, especially the second one. Have you seen larger samples of them to make sure they aren't too gray?

Oh THANK YOU GUYS! You picked my favorite also! Peg the first one is Giallo Ornamental. Rhome as soon as I saw the post the Santa looked blah to me also it does have more color in the larger piece. I don't like dark granite either but with lighter cherry cabinets and a natural QS oak floor I was afraid it would not have enough contrast.We start demo Monday I'm excited and nervous all at the same time. Yes I do plan on viewing slabs but it is about an hours drive and I just was trying to eliminate some choices. I'll keep you posted in the meantime I'll be on a first name basis with the pizza delivery guy. LOL! Thanks again!

Marybeth, Your pics look exactly like my 2 cabinet colors (brown accent and all)!! I am doing oppisite tho..my island is actually maple that looks like cherry with the ant white for the rest.. I came home with three samples from the granite place that look exactly like yours.. Santa Cecilia, Tropical Brown and Giallo Bochard (that's what they call it) same colors in it as yours only more it has more tan and I picked a slab with a lot of cream spots. I got a lot of opinions including my KD and they all went with the GB!

Marybeth - I have Giallo Ornamental in my kitchen, and I would never have guessed that first sample was that. The sample marked Santana actually looks more like my granite. It just goes to prove you should always see the full slabs before making a choice.

You must go to the granite yard to choose your granite. It's too much of an investment and there are so many variations... That said, my vote is for #1 - just go see it and choose *your* slab.

Glenster, I'm sorry I just realized my mistake. The first granite is Giallo Napoleon. I have so many names rattling around my head I'm dizzy. You and goldust are right you do have to view slabs and I did only to come up with more ideas to confuse me more. Here is a link that might be useful.
