Carrier Infinity Control System Static Pressure

I'm still looking for some advice on a brand new install. I'm the home owner, and my installer is side stepping my questions.

My static pressue tests are comming in around 1.45 - 1.56

Did this installation replace a previous furnace and condenser? If so what size condenser did it replace?

Did the installer measure the ducts and verify they have the capacity to handle a 4 ton condenser?

Hey Mike,
Yes they replaced the old 22 year old system. The old system I want to say was 2.5 ton.

No measurements were made of the ducting that I know of, only site verification, and the installer said that the duct size was sufficient.
However I measured the return hole and mine is 14x20 and the install book recommends a minimum of 20 1/8 x 24
3/4. I guess I should crawl into the attic and measure the ducting myself.

Anymore help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi mike, Sorry. I had a death in the family and totally forgot about my ac problems. I still have a problem. My system never registers filter use past 10%. I have been changing it every 6-9 months. I use a 4 in filter that should last close to 9-12 months. I have a 3T furnace in my attic. My ac indicates coil temp 65, static pressure 0 lvoltgae 236v Also I just notice that it says I had 33-limit fault 2 events. Don't know what this means. It states 2/6/2010 12:16am.. Also, on system maintenance, it indicates owner maintenance every 6 months and %used 26%. Shouldn't this be close to 75%? I certainly don't want a reminder at 26% use - even though it never gets above 10%. When the technician came, he reset it...went to 10%, then 20% and now almost 2 months later the usage is 10%. My system is 4 years old so I'm still under warranty. They are coming today to discuss adding a new return on the hallway about 15 ft away from the other 20x20 return. Would this make any difference?

Thank you Ryan and Tiger! I appreciate the posts. To answer your questions... * I came in contact wiht the dealers from the carrier website. I exclusively picked factory authorized dealers with president club awardees. * Yes, the furnace is in the attic and the system just covers my upstairs (approx 1200 sq ft). (not sure what to make about the venting / pvc reference?) * I have a sfh with 2 outside AC units and 2 indoor gas furnances. Both are 10+ yrs old and builder grade comfort air units. The upstairs one (giving me trouble) is a 2 ton and the downstairs unit is a 3 ton. I have 3 floors each about 1200 sq ft. * I will request a modified quote with the suggested furnance options - I am glad I asked I assume the price I referenced for Quote #1 seems reasonable? Not a pro, but I just replaced two 6 year old Amana units (made by Goodman). We'd already paid for multiple repairs adn were hoping to go a bit longer but our hand was forced when we discovered a Puron compressor was replaced with an R22 compressor and the coil was contaminated. There was also a question about whether the furnace was properly sized -- I got different answers on that and didn't verify for myself before deciding we were not going throw good money after bad. I now have two Infinity systems with the touch thermostats. I don't know how much difference there is in the touch controllers, but they are nice. I really like that I can easily read them in the dark rather than having to close a door and turn a light on when DH is sleeping. I like how smoothly the systems run and how evenly they cool. You will never miss that blast of hot air when an AC kicks on, we can set the system to dry the air or to cool to temp. The controls are easy to use and while we do have the ability to set them remotely with a phone app, we haven't needed to yet. Nice to know we can I suppose, but that wasn't a selling feature. Large and easy to read even in the dark may matter more for us.

Rangerneil, You did not indicate heatpump or AC. I have a Bryant Puron AC system which is the same manufacturer as Carrier. I think your infinity thermostat is the same as my Bryant thermostat. It appears your thermostat was not set up properly by the installer as to the proper outdoor temperature and current humidity levels and possibly the indoor temperature. These three can be reset to the proper settings. You will need an accurate or near accurate thermometer and either a hygrometer or psychrometer to measure the humidity inside at the thermostat location. Do not use any radio broadcast for any of your measurements because they will not be as accurate as the conditions outside of your home. When you check the temperature outside, measure it in a area away from concrete. If your installer placed the Outdoor Air Temperature switch too close to the compressor, it will never indicate the true outdoor air temperature because you will measure the ambient temperature plus the heat coming off the compressor. But I am going to assume the installer placed it away from the compressor. You need to get a decent thermometer and hygrometer and/or psychrometer to measure the humidity. It may be easier and cheaper to call back the installer and have them do the measuring and recalibrate the thermostat. Ask about the location of the OAT if you have one. You should have the installer instructions for the stat. Read through it to see if an OAT is mentioned. If you decide you want to measure using your own instruments, then stay away from those $20.00 hygrometers from either Radio Shack or the home centers as they will be + or - 5 or more percent off from actual humidity. Now take note of your stat's indoor readings for room temperature, outdoor temperature and humidity readings and record them on a piece of paper. Do the same for your actual measurement of outdoor temperature and record that also. You will need both of them when you re-calibrate your stat. But before you purchase anything, check your stat for a advanced settings button. If you have this, then press and hold this button for about 10 to 15 seconds until a install/service menu pops up. On this menu, you should see "Settings" as one of the choices, highlight this using the scroll button. Click the select buttom, usually located on the right side of the stat. The next menu will be the "Setup Menu" with the "Thermostat" highlighted. Select this and another menu called "Thermostat Setup" pops up. As you look down on the menu, you should see "Offsets". Scroll down to it and select it. The final menu will say "Thermostat Setup" again and you will see three offsets adjustments to either raise or lower depending on what your actual outdoor and indoor temperatures are and your indoor humidity offset. The first choice may be the indoor temperature adjustment and the other choice should indicate for the outdoor adjustment and then your indoor humidity adjustment. Use the temperature selection button to make your adjustments. Refer to the readings you recorded on paper and make your adjustments to add or subtract from the thermostat readings. Then you are done. Press the advanced button briefly and you will be prompted to save your settings. Select yes. Afterwhich, your stat should be showing the correct measurements for the outdoor and indoor temperatures and indoor humidity. Hopefully, You have an AC system as I am not positive that a heatpump has the same configuation as an AC system for set up purposes. Then maybe this info can help others. If you have the install/setup booklet for the thermostat (not the user manual) it will explain everything about the advance settings menu's.

I've got the measurements

I have TWO 10 inch flexible ducting pipes comming up into the attic.

One of the 10 inch goes directly to the Master Bedroom, and explains why that room does well with cooling & heating.

The other 10 inch splits into several different sizes. First it splits to 8 inch which also goes to the Master Bedroom off that split near the 10 inch is a 5 inch that splits off and feeds the upstairs bathroom. The next split which is also near the 10 inch is TWO 6 inch that feed the two upstair bathrooms. I hope that helps some.

Yikes! You went from the 2.5 ton to a 4 ton condenser? I am no expert, but it sounds to me your ducts are too small to handle the 4 ton system.

You need to have the contractor explain why you have such a high static pressure if the ducts sizes are sufficient.

Is the contractor a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer? Do you have confidence in this abilities?

lmao, the contracter is doing everything to rectify the problem after the fact, the orginal installer they hired didn't quite do what he was supposed to, the installer they have out today is fixing all the problems. They are installing an inline fan on the 6 inch ducting that goes to the two rooms that wern't cooling that well, and they are opening the return under the unit to match the width of the unit. They are also (at my request) putting the filter inside the house instead of under the unit. Lots of cutting going on. Anyway I will post if that took care of the Static pressure problems.

Static pressure is the difference between the negative pressure (from your returns) and positive pressure ( at your supplies). This is an indication of the air-flow over the coils.
These will differ as your air filter plugs up, the "tightness" of your air filter, the duct sizing.
On a retrofit I'd suggest it's OK, but there should be, on your rating plate, a spec for EST. If it's within range, you're laughing. If it isn't I'd 1st consider more return air as that's the most common fault, but I'd also look at the supplies. Are they restricted (i.e. under furniture or behind?). Are the vent dampers wide open?
If you've got the gauges, try removing the filter first. If that brings it into line, you can switch the fan into the next highest speed, replace the filter and rock on.

Hey Josh you nailed it!

They just got done opening the return hole IAW the MFG reccomendations.

ALL IS WELL!!! Static pressure is now at .41-.45 at 1440 CFM's YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They still added a switch and an in-line fan to help cool my computer room which is a really nice addition, I can turn on the extra cooling when I need it.

As well they moved the filter into the house so I don't have to tear apart the unit in order to replace the filter.

I am totally happy at this point, and just wish the original installer was as professional as the second one.

Glad to hear your static pressure problem has been resolved. The static pressure measurement is a great diagnostic tool within the Infinity Controller. You probably would not have been able to resolve the problem this quickly without the static pressure information.
