I like it too, but only in certain things. Elery puts it in everything he can think of, when I could do without in a lot of stuff.

It's my favorite herb of all time. I keep a bunch in the refrigerator at all times and rarely does any go bad. And culantro is even better because the flavor tastes like cilantro, yet the flavor does not cook out of food nearly as quick.

It's not my favorite herb of all time, but I like it a lot in certain dishes.

We just ate a very good CA bistro last night, and the chef made a seared scallop starter with green curry sauce. Instead of the usual searingly hot Thai version, he created a housemade green curry that had a lot of cilantro but not too much heat that would have overpowered the scallops. A few dabs of coconut cream, some diced mango and a little sprinkle of chopped peanuts - one of the finest appetizers I've had in a long, long time. I don't normally care for scallops, but this was an amazing dish!

I am one that likes it, I have it growing in my garden and will use it in most Mexican dishes.

Love it. And Jkom51, that dish sounds wonderful!

It's used a lot in Canary Island cooking, so I can take it when it's cooked together with other ingredients and nearly unnoticeable.

Otherwise the scent and flavour to me is also like soap and not appetizing.

And I have quit eating in the Mexican restaurants around here, because they have, for the last several years, been putting it in everything.

When we first moved here, 40+ years ago, it was unheard of, and I loved Mexican food.

Not now! Unless it is home made, by me.

I like it and use it in Mexican dishes. I even put it in hm chicken soup with a pinch of cumin during the flu season.

I love it. In the morning when I have my black bean burger for breaky, I mix up some fat free sour cream, lime, salt, and cilantro to top it off. I love it in salads and in salsas and Mexican dishes. Both hubby and I think it is great.

I love cilantro and have been tossing it into quite a few things. I use a lot of it in my fresh spring rolls and last week I made an herb pasta salad that turned out really good. I love it when I can walk out and just cut fresh herbs for something.

Despite what I said about cilantro being a winter crop for me in the previous thread, I do have some growing in my garden now. I just decided to throw the seeds into a part that was very shady, and they are doing quite well now, but then I have a sprinkler system that I did not have in Venice. I also have some that are going to seed in a pot, and I will save the seeds when they are ready.

I love cilantro in Japanese soup and also in summer rolls (made Vietnamese style with rice paper). I tend to put it in guacamole now also, but not always. I also put it in green salsa that I make but otherwise not in most of the Mexican dishes that I make. The Mexican cookbooks that I have rarely use it outside of salsas. I do not remember it being common in the Yucatan or Oaxaca, although I did find it in Mexico City. It's either a trend or a northern Mexico herb. I associate it with south Asia, especially India.

I love it! I put it in my taco salad, ceviche, and falafel....

I also like it in guacamole, but not sure if that is traditional...

Dislike it, but can tolerate small amounts. Could easily give it up for the rest of my life--unlike, say, tarragon...

I like in salsa for the most part. It's okay in some other dishes too but I've found most places use way to much for my taste. It's like it over powers the dish.

"Taste like soap" That seems to be the general thinking of people who don't like it. I read more than once that some peoples general body chemistry and taste buds cause this. I've even had this discussion with checkout clerks at the store. I find that take on it very interesting.

Loveeeee cilantro. Origanally from Yakima WA, but I have lived in Texas most of my adult life. In fact I live 7 miles from the Mexican border, so a Tex-Mex dish with out cilantro is just not do-able. And I too always have it in my fridge and during winter it just grows all over my yard.Josie

Doesn't taste like soap to mr. Tastes fresh and sort of like mint or basil. My favorite is mint-cilantro chutney with flatbread.

I like cilantro... Ages ago I had a recipe from Gourmet (I think) that was a pretty simple chicken breast saute, but then used, as Barnmom said, a staggering amount of cilantro and butter. I want to say it was 2 sticks of butter and 2 cups of chopped cilantro or something..... I wish I could find that recipe again..... it ws superb.

Sorry to disappoint you Rusty, whichever you are. I lived on a farm and had a barnyard growing up. How anyone can compare the two smells is beyond my comprehension.

Beverly, I agree, I still have a barnyard and I only wish it smelled anything like cilantro, LOL. Or anything besides a barnyard in this weather!

Rusty, it DOES matter. Not specifically whether you are one gender or the other but that you keep a very fundamental fact a secret. Those of us who have been here for years have shared our lives with one another on this forum with both personal details and photos. To have someone join the group and post with great frequency but reveal little, not even gender, feels like there is a voyeur among us. It's creepy, frankly.

I love cilantro I find it refreshing and fragrant! I mean it is a relative of parsley isn't it? which is a natural palate cleanser so how can it be sewer-y or barnyard-y must be a personal chemistry thing.. do those who dislike cilantro shy away from parsley too? Just curious.

Andy I always use cilantro in my guac and the base recipe is from a classic cuban cook book so I think we're ok ;-)

I like it in Mexican food dishes. I've used it for salsa and pico de gallo. I bet it would be really good in chili too! YUM! Oh and tortilla soup...I'm making myself hungry for Mexican food!

Actually, I'm not being 'covert'.
I have introduced myself on two different occasions, two different threads.

I don't post here very often. Now I realize why.

My interests in this forum are cooking and cooking related topics. So that's what I read and am apt to respond to.
I very rarely read the personal stuff, and I don't post personal stuff. I very rarely go to the conversations side for the same reasons. The one time I went there to apologize for something I thought was a mistake on my part, I was critisized for it by The Sarcastic One. So, no more.

Has anyone here ever given any thought to just how much someone with less than honerable intentions, (or maybe just a lot of curiosity) could learn about you? And what they might (or might not) do with that info?

Now THERE'S a scary (creepy) thought!

I'm growing cilantro and saw this thread. I don't like very much at one time and am only growing it because someone gave me three plants. It's kind of wierd that it is only about 8" tall and going to seed already. I might just throw it out.

Rusty - if you are worried about what people do with information about you I would just stay off the internet. There are all kinds of people tracking you there. The guy that rents a portion of my duplex is a IT guy. Even with all the security stuff he has on my computer, he runs all kinds of programs at least once a week to clean it up. And did I just see something on CNN last week about people tracking you by where you are using your cell phone? It was more detailed than what tower your signal bounces off of.

I can't imagine going even a day without using it. We have fresh salsa or guacamole with cilantro almost every day. Cilantro in olive oil makes a great topping for fresh bread.

You have to pick it very young or it's bitter. When it gets over about 6" tall it is too bitter to use fresh. The best way is to plant a few seeds every week to have a continuous fresh supply. The seeds are Coriander and are wonderful in Asian and Indian dishes.

Really? I've bought large bunches of cilantro at the farmer's market. It's about 9-10 inches tall and is not bitter. Are there different types of cilantro like there are different types of carrots?

But I think when anything goes to seed it is not going to taste good. I'll try the olive oil thing. It sounds good!

Yeesh, I can't stand cilantro. I'm in the "it tastes like soap" camp. Sorry to all you cilantro lovers out there! I figure if I don't eat dishes with cilantro, it just means there's more for you!

Anyone who goes out of their way to hide their gender is a little strange to me.
But a 3 minute look-see revealed that Rusty is either a woman or a very strange man who is into nylon net bunnies and gluing doilys into shapes to make baskets for little scented soaps.
And I have discovered where rusty lives, but since she prefers to be private, I won't reveal that here.
But I was surprised...I always thought Rusty was one of the guys.
I read an article that states that certain people have a tasting mechanism that makes cilantro seem nasty....
I don't think it's learned....some people are hard wired to hate it just as most people are hard wired to love sweet and hate bitter.

Like it! Every time I see this topic come up I'm surprised that there aren't similar threads about parsley. That's probably my number one most-omitted ingredient in any recipe. Can't say I hate it, but I just don't "get" it and in any quantity I clearly dislike it.

Rusty - I totaly understand internet security concerns but aside from confirming that you're human, I can't think of one trait that would give away your identity less than gender. Yet while I can't pinpoint or verbalize why, I also can't think of another trait - whether age, race, religion, etc. - that to me is anywhere near as disconcerting to be in question. Especially since, despite what you say, you post here enough to have established a personality. Concave or convex, dunno but to me that's almost as basic as knowing that you're not a labradoodle. Just my opinion of course!

Depending on which forum, from what I have read, for every posters, there are 10 to 30 lurkers, and for every poster who chooses to reveal his/hers/its identity, there are 50 to a 100 who don't.

I am one of the many "creepy", "strange" posters who is too shy to reveal his face.

Ann, that's a removable/reusable insulated greenhouse that you can erect and demount in 15 minutes. It will give you about two more months growing time. It goes with an invisible 10' tall support system for tomatoes that has no-stakes and no cages.

Mainly because of the nasty attitudes, especially towards newbies.

It is only handfull of regular posters, causing all the problems.
Usually to make themselves look better to their CF friends, by their remarks.
And most of their remarks are untrue.
I don't know what gives them the right to think they are in charge of the CF.

It should be an equal opportunity thing.

I know personally, I've lost many CF friends, whom I've never done any wrong,
because of these comments, that turned things around to make me look like the bad guy.

They all had a field day. In one way I'm glad not to be associated with them anymore.

I have enough personal friends, that are not phonies.

I appreciate all my CF friends.
