Oh ny God! Tell me evrything will be ok? Cold Temps!
Comments (6)You guys knew I would be back in a short amount of time. :-) You are the best! Whoosh....I am just so glad the roots didn't freeze and that my mother caught it in the knick of time. I guess there are some advantages to caring for our moms when in need, right? She called me as soon as she noticed and I think I broke the speed barrier to get home and get the heat going. Thank God I have her at home watching things for me while I am away! She even zips and unzips my hot house when it gets to hot in there, like 95 degrees, until I get home. I also just realized that in my attempt to warm it up in there this am, I totally forgot to water them, so she will do that too in a half hour thank God..:-) I bought her a huge coffee and I am going to take her out to eat for that. She is always keeping an eye on the temps for me..:-) By the way Jodik, she wnat you to know she cares for you so and prays for Larry to keep getting better and for you to stay as healthy as you can be despite your sickness. You are loved by us here! Mike...Thanks for the encouragement man! I bet your trees are just awesome about now in your mix, at your hands mercy, without the mites and longer days. Yahoo. Comments (4)Then what explains why the very new growth on some of my plants, especially my calomondin orange tree, would be almost yellow while the temps have flucuated so much, then that very same growth turned green along with new growth as soon as the temps stableized for over a week? Now that the temps have dropped back quite a bit again for the past few days,50's by day and 40's by night, the new growth coming in along with some of the new and old growth on my denias is turning yellow again and fast? These same plants turn green again, once the warmth comes back? Warm nights and warm days on a consistant basis. Is this a fertilzer problem, or the weather to blame? If the drastic changes in weather, from greenhouse to homes, from outdoors to inside are the culprit behind defficiencies, then it is not a cultural problem nor the fertilizer right? Please unconfuse me. It is not a watering issue for sure, since I have them in the gritty mix. Last year when temps were stable in June and it rained everyday, my plants prospered! So, is FP going to be a problem in drastic temp changes? Is it a urea based product? Should it work WELL even with these changes, or will it be locked up in the soil until favorable temps return? Comments (44)My rooster was getting frostbite regularly until I started rubbing vaseline on his comb and wattles and bought the heat lamp bulb. It's one of those really big red heat lamp bulbs people put in their bathrooms. It's 250 watts and just goes into a regular (but not plastic) socket. It cost me about $10 and has been well worth it. I only run it at night when it's below -15 and the odd day when it is that cold all day. The vaseline helps a lot too. He struggled fiercly until I started stroking his comb with the vaseline. Then he got really still and just stood quietly though the whole procedure. I think he likes it. I've done it a few times. It's necessary anyway, whether he likes it or not. I laughed the first time, as one of the lead hens came up really close, watching, and asking a quiet question. When she got in his face he gave her a little chirp without moving and she went away. I guess she was worried. It was so cute! I remember that about Thunder Bay. The things that do grow well there get HUGE due to the extra long daylight. The blackflies and mosquitoes are fierce but only for a very short period of time, then nothing. They get so bad in May they drive the moose out onto the highways. I saw my only real life bald eagle up north and up close. I actually had to use the break to keep from running into him with the car. He was flying down the highway in front of us. HUGE and gorgeous bird with a wingspan much larger than our car. I had no idea they were so big! I never have the camera when I need it!...See MoreCold Air coming in through bathroom exhaust fan
Comments (6)OK...problem is now resolved (I think). I managed to get the cover and light fixture out of the unit, then removed the fan assembly to see if I could see things better. There is a contra-flow "flap" that was stuck in an open position. I could close by pushing it shut with a screwdriver, but then when I opened it again, it stayed open. Perhaps some lint build-up or something like that, but anyway, there was a plastic tab that is to act as a counter-balance to make the thing shut again so I attached a small paper clip type thing to it to give it just an extra bit of weight. Now when I push it open with a screwdriver, it opens and then closes back on it's own. As for the venting piece, I really can't see if it's venting directly into the soffit, but I suspect you are right. It is so far back into a corner of the house, it's virtually impossible to see. Thanks to all for your help and advice. I love this kind of teamwork....See Morecountryboymo
