That angled peninsula makes it looks a little squinshy in the nook, doesn't it? Is she also wanting seating at the peninsula or not?

I would utilize the extra foot by bringing expanding the foot print to the corner of the breakfast nook, and forgoing seating at the peninsula. (No counter overhang). I think trying to squeeze both in will make it uncomfortable for both seating groups. Better to have the table seating if that's what she wants.

If one square is one foot there, then the peninsula needs to shorten up quite a bit as that's a bottleneck to getting into the fridge.

I'd actually eliminate the peninsula all together and use a mobile cart for an island. The seating in the nook is right there and I don't think you gain anything by trying to cram in both types of seating.

I have to agree with Live Wire Oak in that the redundant seating at a peninsula is taking away from having a great banquette area in your breakfast nook! That is the first thing I thought when I saw your layout - BANQUETTE! Good luck :)

You're right Deedles and palimpest, the nook will probably be too small to be of use if there is counter seating. It was actually my idea to try and utilize that strange nook with 3 windows for additional seating, because DD1 was hoping to just have the counter/peninsula seating.

Live wire oak, I'm afraid if the whole peninsula is eliminated, there won't be much cabinet storage left. The plan is to get rid of the cabinets over the peninsula to open up the space to the soffit (revamped with recessed lighting) which has to stay because of 2nd floor plumbing.

Here are a few more pix � one of the exterior showing what the bumpout looks like from the back yard. We had thought about bumping out the whole kitchen to the back side of the nook bumpout, but as you can see it really isn�t feasible as I can see.

Also tried to think of a way to incorporate the nook INTO the kitchen, but the windows are lower than counter height, so that would not work either.

It's a bit hard to envision that nook, but I guess it will have to be either be ignored or used as a full on nook with no peninsula seating.

Note to live wire oak: I believe the graph denotes 18" per square as that is the size of the floor tile. I will have to verify, but I can't imagine a walkway being 24" as that appears to be.

I'm thinking that ideally the best bet for making it a bigger space would be to knock out the sink wall and lengthen the whole kitchen out to the depth of the nook (3-1/2 more feet.)

$$$, time and labor is all it would take. ;-) (In particular moving plumbing, electrical.) Fortunately we have some handy men in the family if we can come up with a reasonable floorplan.)

I'd really like to see her have a small dining set somewhere in the configuration if at all possible and it may mean giving up on the counter seating.
She has a few weeks before closing/moving, so will continue to explore options for her. Thanks for the help!

I'd opt for a small island instead of the peninsula. More flexible and better traffic patterns. And I'd turn that single wall cabinet between the window and nook into a china hutch to house the everyday dishes and glasses.

Since you have good resources my first inclination is to extend the area behind the range to the end of the house. The roof would fit right in.
If you could expand the floor plan to include the room with the patio door, that would be helpful to develop this idea.

Great house! It would be helpful to see the full floor plan, to know what the traffic patterns are. It seems like such a great space to work with, that you wouldn't need to go to the expense of expanding the footprint, but hard to tell without the full picture. Where will snackers/drink-fetchers be walking from? Just looking at this, I'd be inclined to take out the peninsula, to make the window seat/banquette area open to the kitchen, then extend the fridge wall into the family room space further, and add a peninsula there (standing, not seating), for buffet/snacks/entertaining (maybe even with a bev fridge facing into the family room). That wouldn't work if there was a major thoroughfare from the doorway on the range wall. Is that a room or closet behind the fridge wall? Could you steal any space there?

Well, I always take into consideration the family flow and uppermost to me is having a nice wide walkthru/walkway.

I like the idea of including the nook in the design of the kitchen and then adding an island instead of peninsula.

The space between the refrigerator and the peninsula looks tight. I have something like this now and it drives me crazy.

Would you consider changing out the windows in the nook to make them counter height? My brother did something similar in his home (though it's brick not stucco) and was able to come up with a floor plan that made him much happier than if he hadn't.

I'm not sure if there is enough room for an island in the current footprint (DD1 would love it if there were!) I agree that the space is tight by the fridge, I think the current incarnation addresses that and allows more a bit more space there.

Hoping to get back in to see the house soon, DD1 said closing will be ard. Valentine's Day.
I suggested to her that she meet some neighbors that might have the same floorplan ( I think there are 2 others in the cul-de-sac) and see what they have done with the nook area.
