Any Advantage in Commercial Maytag Washers?

I'll be looking to buy a new front load washer within the next 6 months. I would love to have 1) commercial grade quality 2) few whistles and bells 3) durability (at least 10 years).

I would normally lean towards a new Speed Queen Front loader. However, at 2.8 cubic feet, the drum volume is a tad small (family of 4 with two teenage boys).

Question:

Do the commercial Maytag front load washers, such as Model # MHN30PD give you any advantages over their residential front load counterparts?

Why don't you take an average load of clothes to your speed queen dealership and see if they fit in the machine?

I have a speed queen front loader and find it holds the same amount of clothing as the L.G. that it replaced.

Thanks for replying. If your Speed Queen front loader holds as much clothing as your previous LG - then:

1) How big was your LG (in drum volume) & what model number was it?

2) The same amount of clothes fit, but are they all clean? Just askin'

3) Any quality issues with the Speed Queen? How long you owned it?

I still would like to know if the commercial Maytags differ internally from the residential, homeowner models (such as better bearings, pumps, etc)? Anyone know?

Of course you can get a coin drop to takes more than 8 quarters. All commercial washer manufacturers have coin drop machines that can be programmed to accept a large number of coins before starting the machine. The standard coin drops that come with a Maytag I believe can be set to take up to 99 quarters. Most other coin drops can also be set to take well over $2. The 55 pound washers in my store are set to take 22 quarters and they are the same drops as on my 7 quarter top load washers. If you are talking instead about coin SLIDES, well then you are kind of at a dead end. Monarch makes a slide that takes 2 coins in each slot, so I think you can get up to $4 in one push. Depending on the starting mechanism for the washer, some will allow multiple pushes (Wascomat allows this), but this can be confusing to customers. Set-O-Matic coin drops and Keltner coin drops can be installed in most washers. Do a web search on these companies and call them directly.

Thanks for the replies. Actually, my husband has been diligently trying to diagnose the problem with my old Whirlpool. He had it narrowed down to the timer or the motor. After doing some testing today with a multimeter, he’s decided it’s the motor (which would explain the odor when it died). He has ordered a replacement—used from a dealer on eBay. Part will be here on Friday hopefully. He’s already repaired it once in the past month (different issue). I’m lucky he’s very mechanically inclined. Buying a new machine is a last resort. I’m just trying to prepare just in case this repair doesn’t work. I absolutely dread the thought of buying a new washer as I feel that all appliances are disposables now. Thanks again. :)

I think you would be happier, overall with a SQ FL if you could find one for sale. The smaller commercial TL is kind of like a petite washing machine in terms of capacity. Ex: what would have taken 3 loads in my (at the time) 3.6 cu ft FL at home, required 5 to 6 of those TL machines at the laundromat. They washed well, but the final extraction was not the best, certainly not as good as my present washer or my old ones. I told myself it was likely due to it not being the best maintained laundromat, but who knows--it could be inherent to that particular model. Jeff's reporting on his SQ FL is impressive and made me wish I had gone that route instead because if I remember correctly, the SQ FL would have fit in my space. I was 12 years into poor FL performance and frequent break downs, so I didn't want to go that route again at the time I needed to buy. You would just have to learn how to use it properly. It's not a big change over, but a few little changes and you are set. Plus, Mr hisown would be happy too.

Maytag makes a top loader similar to a traditional non he machine. I wouldn’t buy any top load machine with impeller (no agitator). I had one for one week and it went back for a front load machine. It never got the clothing wet let alone clean them no matter what the cycle. Impeller machines just don’t clean as well. They also can cause your clothing to have lint and pilling due to them rubbing together to get clean. Speed queen would be my choice even a used one 2017 or earlier model. They are built great. Speed queen is offering a 10 year warranty on all their machines if you buy before the end of the year. The new TC5000 model is closer to the 2017 model then any of the other speed queen top loaders currently available. For me a front load machine cleans way better then anything else I’ve ever got. Sure there is a learning curve but once you get that down they really do clean well, save water and wear n tear on your clothing. Good luck!

I don't know anything about commercial Maytag washers (I have an HE TL Maytag Bravos, and love it), but I think that whatever washer you buy, you will want/need one that will give you true hot water. If you buy an HE washer, you will need an internal water heater to give you true hot water unless you live in a tropical climate.

Yes, my laundry is clean in the Speed Queen. The difference is that I can fill the Speed Queen to the top of the tub. The LG could only effectively wash at 2/3rds full.
The LG (4.0 cu ft, I think) had a tilted drum which reduced the effective space that could be used. The SQ has a true horizontal wash basket which means more effective wash action of the drum.

Just curious - how does a tilted drum reduce the effective wash space? The LG's squirt detergent water on the front throughout a large part of the wash cycle.

The LG machine I had didn't pump water over the wash load during washing. If I filled the drum on the LG, clothing would tangle and not spin out at the highest speed. Almost always, I would find some article of clothing hiding in the rubber boot at the end of the cycle.
