dress shoes for a bad back?

I have an interview suit and dress shirt. I now need to find shoes that will not make my back too made. Ever since my herniated disc, I have been wearing hiking boots and tennis shoes. Since I will, hopefully, begin job interviews in the next couple of months, I need to find something that I can wear for interviews on campuses- usually there is a bit of walking.

Anyone have any recommendations for good brands of shoes? I am thinking Natruraliers or Easy Spirits but I really have NO idea. Have always only worn dress shoes for the "mandatory" events and live in something more supportive. Oh, and I NEVER wear heels- never learned how to safely walk in them, lol.

I like both of the brands you mentioned Janie and also Clark's are a good brand. I had to almost exclusively buy Clark's for a while after I got a heel spur and plantars faciitis (sp). Do you have an SAS store where you live, they have a good shoe too. I have to have a good cushioned insole for my shoes. I haven't worn a heel in many years and I doubt I even could anymore. Oh, I saw a bunch of Clark shoes at the store today but did not know anything about them- wasn't sure if they were "off-brand" or what, lol. Will have to check them out. No SAS stores near here but I can see if there is one in Pittsburgh (2 hour drive but if they keep my back in order, well worth it!).

Waymom, Your post caught my eye. I have rheumatoid arthritis and my ankles and feet also pronate severely and I have no arches. I went to the nearest Foot Solutions store and they have saved me! I bought a pair of fexible but pretty strong dress arch supports from them. They were under $100. The supports flex a little but still offer enough support for comfort walking type shoes. Granted, I will probably never wear "dress" shoes again because there is not enough space for this arch support. But I can wear some comfortable walking type shoes with them. Shoes like some Naturalizers, Softspots, etc. It's a real pain to have to try them all on with the orthotic, but that's life. I also found Finn Comfort shoes. They are made in Germany and sold at Foot Solutions, Nordstrom's and several other American shoe stores. They have a solid cork arch support in their shoes and sandals. I could not ever wear sandals if it weren't for this brand. I love them. They are so supportive and many of the styles are cute. They are worth every penny. In fact, the arch supports inside the shoes are removable and the pedorthist (not sure I spelled that right) at Foot Solutions even adds a little more arch for me. She glues a thin layer of a hard flexible plastic under the arches and then grinds it down smooth. This adds another 1/4 inch arch for me. I may go this week to buy a pair of Durea shoes that I tried on before. The shoes are extra depth but they look great. They have a steel shank and a removable half orthotic arch support. They seem so strong and comfortable. They look really nice with pants. Look for a store that carries orthopedic shoes and go there to see if you can find some help. These people have saved my life. Ginny Ps I don't want to go on too long, but I also wear a pair of Spira tennies. They are "posted". By that I mean, the sole on the inside side (post side) of the heel is made of a more dense material than the outside side. This gives you a lot more support so you don't pronate as much. Look for tennies that have this more solid material on the inside side of the heel area. It's called "posted". Also, the "running" shoe styles are the best because the heels are flared out somewhat and that also gives more support.

Property management agreements vary wildly. Some are based on actual amount of activity they perform on your behalf, but you also need to figure in the liability insurance he had to carry to act as your property manager. If I were in your shoes, I'd be honest with him. Call him over for a cup of coffee, tell him you are ready to sell but you are no longer confident in his ability to best represent you in the transaction. If he wants to step up, you can draft a listing agreement with specifics about his performance (number of showings, marketing plan, whatever you guys decide demonstrates 'aggressive' representation). If he's hostile or a jerk about it, show him the door and walk away and hope he doesn't sue you for breach of verbal contract (which is valid in many states). But either way, you should have a sit-down and discuss it. Just doing it and not addressing him at all is asking for future trouble...not the least of which is the good-old-boy-network word of mouth that he may spread painting YOU as a property owner to be avoided by other REA's. That doesn't help you at all.

Hardwood throughout my entire first floor, including the kitchen and all entry areas. Residents don't wear shoes in the house. Human residents, nor furry ones. :) Visitors are not given any rules upon arrival. :) Most people see you walking around in bare feet, or socks, or slippers, and immediately move to take off their shoes. Depending upon who they are and why they are there, I often tell them don't bother. For instance, if it's the HVAC guy and he's going to work in the cellar, I couldn't care less if he keeps his shoes on. As someone noted upthread, the nice thing about hardwood is that it does clean up very easily. I prefer the residents keep shoes off the floor b/c it does keep the floors cleaner, but there is no way I would ever make a guest remove their shoes. As far as damage - most of the damage to my floor comes from the toenails of the 20 pound furry lunatics who share my home. Yes I keep them short - no lectures on appropriate dog nail procedures please! They are young and love to run and play - nails dig in on cornering no matter how short they are. :) However there has been some damage from people in shoes who had rocks stuck in the treads. Most of it from the early days when the house was under construction because sadly my GC was an inconsiderate moron regarding things like this. TL:DR. It's hardwood. It dents. I do what I can to keep the dents to a minimum but don't stay up at night about it either.

I don't remember what novel I was reading that mentioned this, but it spoke to the lack of undies beneath the wide, belled skirts worn at court. Woe to the woman whose bladder was full when a monarch entered a chamber. No one could depart before him. The result in the book was the sound of a little patter like rainfall, followed by the appearance of a widening puddle beneath a courtesan's silk gown. Someone here has remarked on the relatively recent (19th C) development of shaping shoes differently for right and left feet. Thanks for posting the dressing videos, Annie. I see there are also some showing what men wore. I expect they show why young dandies in novels are risking the poorhouse due to debts to their tailors -- well cautioned against in Lord Chesterfield's advice to his sonto refuse invitations requiring a new wardrobe.

SAS is the way to go. If your foot is the least bit wide they come in wide in several styles.

Clark's are a must for me. I have a couple of Merrill's that are very comfortable and good looking for flats.

I've worn clarks and ONLY clarks shoes for the past 5 years or so--as prescribed by my podiatrist. Definitely not an off-brand. They're a good brand (Brittish, I believe) of very well made shoes. They last forever, and NEVER look worn (I don't know how they do that, but the first pair I bought still look almost new).

However, I wear them for plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. I have no idea if they'd be good for a bad back--you probably want to ask whatever dr. treats you for his/her recommendation for the best shoe for YOUR personal needs. We are all different, our feet are all constructed differently. You probably shouldn't buy a $60-80 pair of shoes (Clarks) just because some of us find them comfortable.

Janie ga, I have the same problem. For everyday use I wear Easy Spirits. When I dress up I wear flats. I have some that are Clarks and I found a pair at Penney's, St. Johns Bay. I bought the last pair long time ago.

I agree with the Clarks, but not sure if you will find a style which goes with what you are wearing. They sell a lot of clogs, but I don't think you want to wear clogs to a job interview! Naturalizer might be good as well. Easy Spirit is another popular comfort brand, but it never worked for me. It all boils down to what feels good for your tootsies, so go try some on.

I buy my shoes from Auditions (catalog) because my feet are narrow. They carry a good selection and do offer a good return policy. I think they carry Clarks and if you call them, they seem to have good information.

I like Clark shoes too, but the most comfortable shoes imho are Walking Cradles. The insole is like an egg crate foam and so comfy.

Another comfortable brand is Softspots.

I think Zappos carries both of them.

when last kid got married i said no heels...went to easy spirit and got a nice pair of dressy flats, i'm still wearing...look for no higher than 1-2"...

look on line at the shoes to get an idea before heading to the store...these looks nice, and some on sale!

i wear Keds at work usually but this fall i got my first pair of Clarks and got a 3" heel dk brown clog that i LOVE, it feels like a slipper! later got a black suede 2.5" heel shootie for walking in atlanta at thanksgiving & dressy dinners. love that shoe too! i wear those clogs everyday now they are sooo comfy to walk in. ~ liz

Check out "Footsmart.com" on line, as well as a catalog. They carry Clarks (what I wear) Easy Spirt (cured my previous foot problem) Naturalizer and Soft Spots as well as many other brands. Right now sales are in progress. My DH used SAS to cure his plantar thing with arch supports from Happy Feet. There are lots of places to check just be sure of the return policy and wear them carefully on carpet to check them out. QVC also carries many of these brands. Great return policy(if you remember to mail them back in 30 days!) Nanny

I have major foot problems in fact can not really walk much these days but some of the brands I like and docs have recommended are Merrell, Clark, SAS, Born, Dansko, Keene(the only sandals I wear),MEPHISTO(awesome, an investment but worth it).
I personally love my Keene sandals, all of my Born shoes and my Merrells and Mephisto. If you have a DSW around you they have a good selection of some of these including the Born, Clarks, Merrell.
Also check out Dr.Comfort shoes online they are a specialty shoe.

Ya'll are SO AWESOME! I will investigate the stores this weekend and let people know as soon as I find something. I have a few weeks at least before I HAVE to have anything so I will take my time. Liz, since I am from GA, I can understand your Atlanta reference! Shelia, we got a Marshalls last summer so now I have another excuse to go there, lol.

If you have a TJ Maxx I happened to find Merrells there for a great price a while back, I bought 2 pair at that price, but they are hit or miss on what they happen to be carrying.

I have the bad back issues also as well as the bad feet so for me it is really essential to have good supportive and comfortable shoes. I like shoes that allow the use of a good orthotic in the shoe.
