My son has developed many allergies to food. The first was bananas and the list has grown from there. My dad also developed an allergy to shrimp a couple of years ago at 76.

I would definitely stay away from shrimp. Are you allergic to other shellfish or do you have an allergy to iodine?

Susie, A shellfish allergy runs in my family and what you describe is a classic shellfish allergy. When my brother was little he mentioned to my mother that after eating linguine with clam sauce his throat started to feel tight. So the next time my brother was at the allergist my mother casually mentioned it at the end of the visit and the doctor immediately tested him. Yup, he was allergic all right, ad this is one of those scary allergies. Throat tightening can cause you to stop breathing.

My advise is to either stop eating shellfish or get tested.

You know I haden't actually eaten the shrimp yet last night ...I had only peeled and chopped them (I was making a tex-mex fajita recipe), anyhow I recall I felt a little odd....kinda like an overall weak feeling like my bloodsugar may have dropped.
Again all of this was very mild but noticable.

I didn't eat much of the shrimp and I drank a lot of water with dinner so about a half and hour later I felt better.

Well I guess I am just going to have to go see Dr Lou...poor me LOL-did I mention he is hot??

I do have a small bag of frozen scallops in the freezer that I was planning on making this week...I better not.

When I was a kid I couldn't eat shrimp and lobster - I would throw up for hours after, but as an adult, I have no problems, so what we found out was that I was not allergic to shellfish, but intolerant. Thank goodness I outgrew it, I love lobster.

1. Most people who develop "allergies" when they get older actually develop "sensetivities". They are not true allergies and allergy tests won't detect them. Shrimp is a common allergy as well as a common sensetivity.

2. Many times, the senstivity people show to shrimp is not the shrimp itself. It's sensitivity to the chemicals used in processing and cleaning (such as sulfites).

3. Scallops are mollusks and shrimp are crustaceans. If you show a sensitivity to both, it most likely is the processing/cleaning stuff and not the actual food.

Oh Susie, you're playing my song! My allergies have multiplied and whether its a sensitivity or allergy-- it will get worse w/o elimination. I use plastic gloves when peeling shrimp, it might be a good idea for you too. I'm not allergic, at least I don't test allergic to shrimp (clams yes) but my hands feel weird almost itchy after shelling them, so plastic gloves were bought. It sounds like you should be using them too when preparing a shrimp dish for the family.
Scallops as noted are an entirely different group.

I once knew a woman who enjoyed all kinds of shellfish and then beginning around the age of 45, it made her sick to her stomach. She was told she had a menopausal "allergy" to shellfish, so she stopped eating it until she had passed through that time of life, and went back to eating it with no problems. ... I was told to avoid shellfish when nursing our children because it might adversely effect mother and/or child, and the reason given was a correlation between feminine hormones and something in the shellfish.

I don't share this information as absolute fact, but I do find the two suggestions of a connection between women and shellfish very interesting.

Not food-related, but I developed an allergy to penicillin as an adult about five years ago. Never had a problem with it and then after a major dental procedure, broke out in a rash that spread all over. I was told never to take it again.

My Son in Law developed an allergy to salmon a few years ago....at first just a slight tight throat....the next time emergency trip to the ER and a shot with an epi pen.
I developed an allergy to pennicillin about 7 or 8 years ago...scary, heart pounding itchy, hands swelling fast breathing etc.....
You can develop an allergy....or outgrow one....
You can call it allergy or "sensitivity"...but it all amounts to certain proteins in the offending food triggers the response.
Go see Dr. Hottie, but also stay away from shrimp....and be sure you have some liquid Benadryl with you at all times.

Liquid Benedryl, that's GOOD advice! It would have saved my SIL a trip the the ER when the Zyrtec was slow to act!
