Yum, yum! what's your favorite?

I just had one of my most favorite breakfasts. Bacon, scrambled eggs, tomatoes from our very own garden, toast and jelly. Just doesn't get much better! For lunch, gotta plan ahead, you know, it will be a "mater" sandwich with Hellman's mayonnaise on whole wheat bread.

I know a lot of you have been having homegrown tomatoes for a while but in my area I don't think we've ever had them quite so early. Usually it's at least the last of June.

Have a good day everyone!

No home grown tomatoes here for at least 6 weeks, and those will just be the first/early ones.

Your breakfast sounds good, mine was a high fiber English Muffin with a smear of peanut butter, sitting at my desk. Oh, with a cup of coffee. More often I don't have breakfast at all. What's for lunch? Darned if I know, but it won't be fresh tomatoes.

Lucky you! I can only hope that some of those more southern tomatoes head up this way.

There's really nothing better than a tomato, ripe, juicy and still warm from the sun...

    Yum, Yum, Squirrel Croquettes

    Q

    Comments (11)
My husband said the hawk was in our yard a couple of days earlier with a squirrel. It could just be the cold weather but there are definitely less squirrels in my yard. Just this fall I was wondering about how the squirrel population was increasing. It was sad, actually. While the hawk was devouring the squirrel, just a few feet away, behind a tree, was another squirrel, clinging on very still but at attention. Later, after the hawk flew away with his prize, the squirrel was sniffing around the spot, probably missing a sibling.

No fertilizer this year. Occasional Epsom Salts. The picture is deceptive, it looks like some of the peppers are from the plant in the round pot--not so, the one in the round pot has no large ones--this plant is falling over with peppers. The seedlings I planted this year are also doing very well considering their age and the constant rain--see attached pic--this plant already has as much peppers as I got last year from the above mentioned plant. Please disregard the date of the pic, it was taken July 23rd. My peaches are a constant battle with the squirrels and raccoons--gonna pick em all tomorrow. Ravi

    Eating Bone Marrow - yum

    Q

    Comments (22)
Marrow used to be (over the last hundreds of thousands of years) one of the most important food sources, and in many cultures it still is. Marrow (and brain tissue) is high in fat and protein, two nutrients that are hard to get on a foraging diet. If "they" managed to kill an animal, nothing went to waste, and the marrow was a prized food. It is very important for brain growth. From Wikipedia Though once used in various preparations, including pemmican, bone marrow for human consumption in America has recently fallen out of favor as a food; however, Alaskan Natives do continue to eat the bone marrow of caribou and moose, and slow-cooked marrow is the core ingredient of the Indian dish Nalli Nihari. Now, it is commonly used only as a flavoring for soups and sauces, although dishes with intact bone marrow can still be found in some European restaurants. Bone marrow is a source of protein and high in monounsaturated fats. These fats are known to decrease LDL cholesterol levels resulting in a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, prompting some to make bone marrow a dietary staple. The actual health effects of the addition of bone marrow to the diet remain unclear. It's not something I eat, but I have used it, in the past, in soups, when I've roasted then boiled beef bones.

    icecream yum

    Q

    Comments (35)
Ever since I was quite young, if we were getting ice cream cones I would choose mint chocolate chip. That was over fifty years ago and I still do :-) If they don't have mint then I generally get dark chocolate, though from time to time I ty something different. But I always come back to my old favourites. Icecream I get for home is a premium brand we like, since we don't eat a lot. If I'm planning to serve it with something, like fruit or pie, I get vanilla. If I'm getting a flavour, while I prefer their dark chocolate with cherry sauce swirls, DH isn't so fond of it so I more often get coffee with chocolate covered almonds and orange sauce swirls. The cat prefers vanilla :-)

I've got the first little green tomatoes on my plants right now and I go out to lust after them every morning when I water and search for stray snails to murder.

Anyone ever seen the old Mervyn's commercial where the customers are outside the door in the pre-dawn before a sale, peering in through the window and chanting, "Open, Open, Open" will get a fairly accurate mental image of me, eyeing my tomato plants, ostensibly for bugs or disease but really to determine how much bigger the little green babies have gotten over night..."Grow, Grow, Grow!"

Favorite breakfast? Jeepers. Now I've got to try and get good tomatoes out of my mind long enough to think what else is good.

I'm rather odd when it comes to breakfast. I really can't eat until I've been up and about for at least 2 hours to start with. My stomach just isn't interested before then. Once hungry, I am an eclectic when it comes to breakfast. Sometimes I'll eat foods that are traditionally "breakfast" other times not.

The other day, I had breakfast sausages, but with mashed potatoes and peas. Yesterday, it was spaghetti with meat sauce and salad. A few days ago, I had a small steak and a mixed grain pilaf.

One favorite, quickie breakfast is a bit of breakfast meat of some kind, a scrambled egg, kimchee & cold, leftover Japanese (short grain) rice.

Generally, if I do the whole breakfast foods type breakfast, it is on the weekend and I'm making it for both of us...and it is a brunch. Then I'll go all out with breakfast meats, eggs, potatoes/grits/rice, pancakes/waffles/muffins, fruit etc.

For this morning...I'm thinking about some leftover stroganoff and noodles!

I'm about at the end of my tomato crop. Planted in late February they are looking pretty ragged.

DH has been eating tomato sandwiches about once a day, if not for breakfast, then for snack. I have some cherry toms that I have been using for "appetizers" for the babies. They love cherry tomato, cheese flower, pepperoni on a toothpick stuck through the hole in the middle of a Ritz pretzel cracker.

Oh, Rachellen, I know what you mean about willing the tomatoes to hurry. When I see the first green one, I want it ripe and on my plate tomorrow and it takes forever!

I never think to include coffee if I talk about breakfast, that's a given to me. I usually have had several cups before we eat. Bob doesn't usually make an appearance until around nine or so, living the good life of being retired!

On the other hand I just love breakfast, whether it's pizza or whatever. I had been up a couple of hours before I ate and DH, bless his heart, wanted an egg sandwich, not toasted and NO tomato. 50 years and he hasn't learned yet what's good! I give up or, as Charlie Brown would say, "I can't stand it".

No real tomatoes here for weeks and weeks : ( Can't grow my own becasue there just isn;t enough sun but the kids got me one of those topsy turvy things for the cottage. We'll see how long it takes the raccoons to find it.

My favourite breakfast is pea meal bacon, scrambled eggs, home fries and a toasted English muffin, tomato slices only when in season.

Chase, is pea meal bacon the brand name?

Bob has been trying to outsmart, trap a raccoon for a while. Has a Hav-a-Heart humane trap. The 'coon manages to get the bait, which has been various things to no avail. Last night he used an ear of corn, which was eaten, no raccoon, but the trap was thrown. He's going bonkers trying to catch him.

Good luck with your topsy turvy thingy.

I can't eat for a couple of hours either.
This morning was a homemade "McMuffin".
High Fiber english muffin, canadian bacon, scrambled egg and fat free swiss cheese, with mustard. And some grapes.

    Often it's yogurt/muffin or fruit/muffin combos.

No tomatoes until July, at least. With our cool weather this year, who knows? I refuse to eat those red balls of plastic in the grocery store! Yuck.
I will buy canned tomatoes if I run out, but not fresh (term used loosely...).

Rachelellen, I don't eat for about two hours after I get up either, I get up at 6:30 for work and I eat about 9:30, it's good during the week at the office and my secretaries pretty much leave me alone until I've had coffee, they eventually learned. (grin)

I like breakfast for supper more often than I do for breakfast, it's just so much food first thing in the morning, I like something lighter at first, then I eat "real food" later.

Maybe I'll change my mind when I retire and get to farm full time instead of doing the "heels and hose" for the office. I might need more sustenence to dig post holes than I do for office/legal stuff.

    Annie

Deanna, this is the earliest ever that we've had ripe tomatoes and your breakfast sounds very good to me. Ir's usually the last of June or early July before ours get ripe.

Jude, no peameal bacon is a type of bacon very popular here in Canada. I'm not sure why it has never caught on in the States , it is so good!

What Americans call Canadian bacon is not the same as peameal bacon. Peameal is a pickled pork loin that is rolled in corn meal. It is not smoked.

If you ever find it you must try it.

Here is a link that might be useful: peameal bacon

Chase, that's very interesting! I doubt it will ever be available here (in my lifetime). We are always the last to find unusual foods available, but it sound very good.

    Thanks for the link.

I never heard of having tomatoes for breakfast until I met my husband. Now, a couple of fried free range eggs (the real kind of free range) some slices of tomtoes, and some good toast make for a great breakfast. Eileen, avert your eyes for the following. I love it when the yolk is runny, and mixes with the tomato slices. Yum.

Today for lunch I had tomato salad made from a Cherokee Purple tomato and some Juliet tomatoes from my garden. I cut them up into bite size pieces, sliced some basil, also from my garden, and added some grated parmesan and some cubes of mozzarella, (not from my garden, lol) with a little olive oil. It was quite enjoyable.

For those of you jealous of our tomato harvest this time of year, remember that my plants will be spent about the time yours are ready for picking. They quit producing when the temps get above the mid '90's during the day and the mid '70's during the night, which it already has done for the past week or so. Our harvest may not last very long this year if this heat keeps up.

Another favorite breakfast is fruit, berries, plain yogurt, toasted walnuts, ground flax seed, all mixed up, maybe with a little granola added for crunch. I like that so much better than the flavored yogurts that are mostly sugar.

I've pretty hungry within an hour or an hour and a half of waking up. I really don't like eggs, bacon or sausage before noontime and never eat cereal or yogurt so I have to be inventive. I try to keep at least two homemade soups in the fridge for some mornings, also, I've been known to eat leftover chicken a la king, leftover noodles and casseroles. I also like PLT's (Prosciutto, lettuce and tomato, sometimes Pancetta in place of the prosciutto) sandwiches for breakfast. I use Hellman's on those and sometimes prefer arugula to regular lettuce. Fruit is good too, just have to have something more filling to go along with it.

So now I'm thinking caprese salad for tomorrow. My basil plant is huge and I need to use it, maybe make pesto very soon. I may even have some julienned basil on my tomato sandwich tomorrow. See how I drift from one thing to another. So much food, so little time. That PLT sounds yummy....I'lll have to give that a try soon. Love proscuitto!

Ah well, the fruits of summer, how good they are. Speaking of fruits, I'm going to try the summer torte again soon. My blueberries are beginning to ripen and if the birds don't leave me enough, Aldi's has them for 99 cents a pint, so no lame excuses. I didn't do too well on the torte last year but that's a whole 'nother story.

Sally, I wonder why your tomato plants stop producing at those temps? Here in the CA central valley, once the tomatoes get going, I pick well into late September, and get the occasional ripe one (thought they get mealy) in early October, even though we have temps into the triple digits for long stretches as the Summer progresses.

Are you humid there, when it gets hot? Could that be the difference? Or could it be that tomato plants have some sort of "fertility" period, after which they just poop out and could that be overcome by starting some plants later into the season?

I'm actually quite glad to know that so many other people have the same aversion to eating too early. Everyone I've ever known intimately enough to be familiar with their breakfast habits has just loved an early meal. For myself, the thought of anything but maybe toast before I've been wide awake for at least a couple of hours makes my stomach threaten me with dire consequences. The truly odd thing, is that when I wake at 2 or 3 in the morning with an insomnia attack, I can eat a full meal (if so inclined) without a twinge.

Beverlyal, I eat...er, drink?...soup for breakfast too, fairly frequently.

One thing I absolutely cannot abide is sweets for breakfast, particularly if I must eat it earlier than I like. Danishes, pastries, sugared cereals...ugh. I don't even know how exactly my stomach would react, because I've not been able to force such things past my lips on an empty stomach.

I was actually cooking this for dinner last night when I saw your post.

Great minds :)I went to the farmers market yesterday and came home with these gorgeous tomatoes and peaches that were pretty darn good. Oh, and the jam on the biscuit is homemade, a gift from one of my students. Definitely one of the best meals I've made this week!

Our tomatoes won't be ready for picking for some weeks yet. Lucky you! Fresh already. One way I eat tomatoes for breakfast is stewed, with peppers and onions served over scrambled eggs. Toasted oatmeal bread and Wayne's homemade sausages on the side. Probably toss in a mimosa and I'm all set for the day. NancyLouise

That's funny, Nancy, I love fresh tomatoes and Tracey's plate would be a perfect breakfast for me, but I don't like cooked tomatoes with eggs. Elery likes Huevos Rancheros and no way can I make myself eat salsa with eggs, no matter the time of day.

My very favorite breakfast, first thing in the morning, is biscotti with my coffee. Yup, cookies for breakfast, the breakfast of champions, LOL, and my boss will eat them with me.

    Yeah, I know. I'm odd...

Tracy, that kind of meal is good any time of the day! When all my children were small it was almost a given that we would have "breakast" for supper, not always but often.

Sometimes I travel with a group, garden tours etc. and it amazes me how many people eat ooey gooey sweet pastries or even cake early in the morning. I can eat early if need be, but I want something savory before I eat something sweet. I've noticed, for the most part, those of you who like to wait awhile seem to like savory as well.

Blueberry pancakes this morning with bacon and I scrambled an egg for me. Himself doesn't like blueberries in his pancakes so his were plain. Breakfast was 10:30, I've been up since 6:30 with just coffee so I was ready!

Annie it's cause you aren't drinking enough mimosas that you don't care for cooked tomatoes in the morning! Believe me 3 or 4 of those and cooked tomatoes will slide down your throat just like raw oysters, lol! I love homemade biscotti (anise and lemon blueberry are my favorite ones we make) and I too have to be up at least an hour or so before I can eat a good breakfast. Too much food right away makes me feel nauseous. NancyLouise

Ah, so that's the trick, I need to drink FIRST, then eat the Huevos. (grin) I've never had a Mimosa, it just didn't sound like something I'd like, but maybe I should branch out.

I can't imagine ever drinking enough to eat a raw oyster, though, they are just too....icky.

    Annie

Mimosas are my breakfast drink of choice. Orange juice and champagne, Yum Yum. The other breakfast drink that everyone seems to like I can't stomach...Bloody Marys. I'm not a tomato juice fan at all. Go figure, I like fresh and cooked tomatoes but can't even get my lips close to them juiced. Gives me the willies just thinking about it! NancyLouise

Personally, I like mimosas and bloody marys. Don't have them often but I like them. There's just something about
mimosas that makes me feel special.. How pathetic is that!

    jude

Love Mimosas and will never say no to one..... Bloody Mary's OTOH really expose me for the weirdo that I can be. I LOVE Bloody Mary Mix until you add vodka, then I don't like it at all. Makes zero sense to me since vodka is my drink of choice on most occassions. I think I like my Bloody mix spicey and thick and the vodka dilutes it too much. Oh well - I will kee them separate and enjoy them immensely that way!

    Alexa

Oh - and favorite breakfast is whatever someone else makes for me. :-)

I forgot to mention that I, too, am one to wait a couple hours till I eat breakfast, usually. DH, on the other hand, will practically wake up eating. Sweets first thing are fine for him, too. If I've made some cookies or something, he'll grab one or two as soon as he climbs out of bed. He doesn't get that I'm not hungry when I first wake up, and I don't see how he can stomach eating that soon after waking up.

I never liked tomato juice until I tasted my MIL's home made tomato juice from the tomatoes my FIL grew. I was stunned at how good it was. Decades later, and a bit more educated on processed foods, and food in general, I realize why I never liked it before tasting her tomato juice. Quality ingredients, freshly made, without all the additives and the taste of tin can (which the store bought tomato juice used to always come in), makes all the difference in the world.

    Sally

I simply cannot drink plain tomato juice...though to be fair, I've never had home made tomato juice, from fresh tomatoes.

On the other hand, I love a good Bloody Mary or V-8 juice! I don't care for the Bloody Mary mixes, I must make it the way it was made in the Bar of a restaurant I managed. Tomato juice, sweet & sour, black pepper, Tabasco, Worcestershire, horseradish, vodka & celery salt for the rim of the glass.

I never cared for Mimosas...but I love freshly squeezed orange juice and I love Champagne!

Well, there's my problem. I like orange juice but don't like champagne at all, and I hate to ruin a perfectly nice glass of orange juice. I'm OK with tomato juice, I prefer V8, but I don't like vodka mixed in and I certainly don't want it spicy first thing in the morning. Or probably ever, at least not more than a tiny bit of spice, I want to taste the flavors of the food, not just heat. I did like Cathy/Mustangs cranberry juice with limoncello, but I'm not sure I'd want it for breakfast!

I guess I'll stick with coffee or tea, maybe with a biscotti, and then eat breakfast in a couple of hours.
