Anyone grind your own coffee?

Friend gave me a lb of Blue Mountain Coffee to grind.

I HAVE a small grinder that I used to grind flax seeds.

It's clean, but the grinder is really small.

Is that a certain length of time you hold the grind button down?

I have no clue!

Blue Mountain coffee! That is some good stuff. Just pulse it until it looks like the grind you like. Make it fine for espresso, medium for drip, and course for perc.

Grind only what you need as you make coffee. I measure it.

I just grind mine until it looks like the coffee you buy already ground. LOL I think how you like your coffee depends on how long you grind it for. I grind it extra long for espresso when I run out of my espresso beans. Just grind/check/grind/check until it looks 'store bought'. It's all trial and error. If you've never ground your own coffee before, you're going to be addicted fast. I crave home ground coffee quite often. It just tastes so much better.

Do coffee grounds repel pests?- I do not know, the caffeine and smell may repel something. A camel non-filter cigarette has been used to de-worm goats because the nicotine does kill intestinal parasites, but I have not heard anything about caffeine or coffee. Earth worms do love grinds mixed into the soil, but I do not see them in any of my piles of straight grinds. If the flavor of the ammendment carried thru to the taste of the fruit, my tomatoes would taste like the underside of a horses tail!!

I can't belief no one has responded to this. Let me be the first. I also am always looking for the perfect cup of coffee. Used to have the Capresso (with the grinder). It made good coffee, but when something broke, Capresso had us send it back and sent us a replacement. Turned out to be a USED replacement which didn't impress me very much. We then went to the Melitta Grind & Brew which we loved. Bought it off Amazon for $50, liked it so much we bought another just to have (price went up to $60). Good thing we did, because the little Melitta lasted for 1 year. We then opened our stashed Melitta, and that is currently dying on us, after only 2 months! I've been doing a lot of research on this, decided to try the Krups 10-cup grind & brew which I will get next week and will let you know what I think. It got good reviews from what I found on the web. FYI, the Capresso was hard to clean and the Melitta, because it doesn't require filters, was also hard to clean and the mesh basked actually separated from the plastic casing (which was our fault because we had to bang it on the side of the garbage because we don't have a garbage disposal - on septic system here). I will let you know how I like the Krups!

I have casually seen one used once, and I have looked closely at the parts. My SIL has one. It is essentially a big syringe with a filter on the end. I gather that the medium filter still lets some fine particles through, but there is an extra fine reusable metal filter that prevents most of those fines. I would expect it to make a very nice cup of strong coffee. Well, I guess it could slow your drinking down since it only makes single cups and it is a little difficult to set up each time.

I used the Capresso team lux coffee maker with burr grinder for many years-- LOVED IT. Not one bad word to say about it. When it broke down, I replaced it with the new model from Capresso-- but this model was the post-jura merger model and it was terrible... as was their customer service (i had the complete opposite experience with capresso in years past). I gave up the hassle of struggling with Jura and bought the You Brew by Breville. Loved the look.. loved my experience with other Breville appliances. I was so ready to love this coffee maker. I did not. For the first time ever, I returned an item I'd used to Williams-Sonoma. My biggest complaint was that the coffee never got past luke warm.. I also wasnt able to get the strength I wanted but that may have been a matter of fiddling with the controls a bit more. Unfortunately, I never put in the time to work with the brew strength because the temperature was a deal breaker for me. I gave up. I bought a refurbished cuisinart to get me through until someone came out with a better coffee maker with a burr grinder. Hope someone here has a recommendation! Good luck-- I know there are many who are happy with the You Brew but i recommend reading the reviews closely. Others share my opinion with the coffee temps.

We used to before we quit drinking coffee. One tip--don't lift the lid to see if it's fine enough yet. DH did that with peppercorns. Do you know how many weeks you can find pepper flakes in the kitchen?

Yes...I have a Cuisinart grind an brew coffee maker...it has a timer and grinds the beans right before making the coffee. Talk about fresh coffee!

Just grind a little bit at a time and you will probably be fine. I love to grind my own. Blue Mtn and

I grind mine. My grinder is a Braun. I fill the lid with the beans, and then dump that into the grinder and grind until it's pretty finely ground. Usually I grind enough for a couple of days. If I use the scoop to measure, it takes 3 1/2 - 4 scoops of grounds for a good 10 cups. It depends on how strong you like your coffee.

This grinder is small. If I like it, I will be looking for a larger grinder.

Remember my dad had a grocery store and one of my jobs was to grind coffee. Sure smelled good.

We have one of the coffee combo grinders but since I just learned how to make a proper pot a few weeks ago we have only ground it a few times....but....we did by 10lbs of beans from our neighbor who has the flower shop she was fixing a basket for a elderly couple she does stuff for that love the coffee she sells and accidently ordered beans instead soooo instead of sending them back Brian bought it....so I did like my mom and put them in ziploc bags in the freezer.....LOL Stacy

No, other than I use Publix's store grinder to grind my Dunkin Donuts coffee beans. Love it!

I do...just enough for a pot every morning and I too keep the beans in the freezer. DIL is a general manager for a Coffee Bean and tea leaf, she says they stay much fresher if kept in the freezer. Love my coffee!

Glenda, if you do decide to buy a grind, get a burr grinder rather than a blender-type grinder. You can adjust the burr grinder to make fine for an espresson machine all the way down to coarse for a French press and grinds in between. No guesswork and more reliable as well.

I do what Vikki does - grind as I need and keep the beans in the freezer.

No grinder here, but I'd like to see the difference in the taste y'all are talking about. I like it fairly mild.

No smeller here, so that can't appeal to me and I don't really care for the taste of coffee..I just use it as a wake up drug and keep wishing it could do more in that area. lolol

Just about to go grind the coffee for this morning. I buy small amounts and keep it in the cabinet then measure what I need and grind it until it "sounds" right. By that, I mean until the chunks stop flying. Looked at bur grinders a while back and they seemed pricey so I went with the blender type. Picked another one up that was being abandoned in a move for spices. Use stale bread to clean them when they need it (just break it up and whirl it around - works great).
