Front Loading Washer HELP

The great Frigidaire Affinity died after 20 months. Thank god for the extended warranty with the no lemon provision.

What should I replace it with? Most of the washing is regular type stuff, sheets, shirts, underwear, blue genes, sweatshirts etc. Very seldom do we do any really heavy soiled washes or the king size comforter but we would want that ability.

Many people are against them because of reported lack of service in certain areas, but I have been extremely pleased with my LG FL washer. One of the selling points for me was the water plus option that lets you put in just a bit more water and I feel it helps with the washing and rinsing process.

I've had my LG WM2016CW since October 2008 and no problems so far, knock, knock. I bought it to replace a Maytag Neptune that was 6 years old and I never had a problem with that either except for the mold problem, but that was partly my fault because I didn't know at the time how to properly maintain a FL washer.

We purchased the Electrolux EIFLW55H front loading washer two months ago and are very happy. The clothes are cleaner than they were with our Maytag Neptune. We purchased it because the door is reversible, the only one the store had with that feature.

This happened on my Whirlpool. The rip was on the inside of it where you can't see it. We only knew it because it was leaking. It is a replaceable part so call your service people.

Speaking of how much I like the front loader - one of the things I really like about it is that I can wash rugs in it - not the flimsy ones but the ones with stiff backing. They say professional rug cleaning but some of the ones I have are so inexpensive it's not worth the price of professional cleaning. So I tried washing one in the FL once - figured if it fell apart I'd throw it away. It turned out great. So today I washed two rugs I've had in my kitchen for a long time. They're brown oriental type rugs so they hide dirt but they were grungy so I thought I'd wash them. A really weird thing happened. These rugs were (I thought) exactly the same. At least they looked exactly the same before I washed them. One came out beautifully - looks like new. The other one looks entirely different - the colors and pattern are kind of muddy and muted - kind of yucky looking. It almost seems like one was synthetic and one might have been wool - the one that doesn't look very good. So I put the good looking one back in the kitchen and the yucky looking one is in my laundry room. It doesn't look so bad by itself but looks terrible next to the good one. Anyway, FL works great for washing the rugs but you take your chances on whether the rugs are really washable or not. By the way, my normal cycle is 45 mins but there are cycles as short as 30 mins. Drying is fast since the washer spins things so dry.

This advice would upend a lot of people's laundry routines. For some it's impossible to follow without buying new clothes and linens, or a smaller washer. And it doesn't make sense to me. Even with a 2/3 full drum of identical items, the spin won't start out perfectly balanced. The asymmetric forces from such a load could be just as bad, or worse, as from a smaller load. And, during the tumble phases, the big load exerts more force on the bearings than a small load. So I don't know what the answer is, but I don't think this is it. BTW, Cavimum, I doubt that you have a Miele with a 4 cu ft drum. The W48XX series drum is a little over 3 cu ft. The originally advertised 4 cu ft was IEC capacity, which means it holds as much as an agitator washer with a 4 cu ft drum. IEC isn't used anymore in the US. For a present-day example, look at the LG WM3170CW on the US and Canadian LG sites. It's 4.3 cu ft in the US, and IEC 5.0 cu ft in Canada.

Did you buy it new from big box store or some small independent dealer? Unfortunately, it is very common for scrapped units to be resold...The problem is that without the serial number you may not be able to get service on it. Any possibility that there was a serial number in your original paperwork?

My Kenmore HG3 front loader washer and dryer are now 5 years old. They get heavy use from a family of 5 adults including one 22 year old who insists on stuffing what I believe is an entire college semester of laundry into one load. No complaints, no repairs.

LOL! I have one that age too. Totally understand and commiserate. ;-)

(just one reason I love my 4.6 cu ft Maytag Bravos TL HE washer, OT for this thread)

Ouch! Sorry to hear your washer only lasted a short time. As we were shopping for washers & dryers, we were mortified to hear their life expectancy (especially the washer) was around 8 years! This was the general consensus. Although we did own a GE in the 70's that died after 5.

We ended up with the Miele washer & dryer. It came with a 5 yr warranty and is said to last 20 years. We felt it was built better than anything on the market. The drum is rated at 4.0.

Previously, we purchased the newest, large capacity Electrolux, and as we encountered several problems with the washer (we actually tried 3 units) returned the set. I feel as it was a new model, it might take some time to work out the bugs. Outside of the issues we had, I very much liked the units. One thing I did find, if you don't have a large family, the drum can be too large. Your best cleaning comes from loads that are larger rather than smaller. We found the 4.0 drum to still be large enough to handle big loads.

3 1/2 years with Duet 9400 pair with excellent results and zero problems. Two other family members who purchased later models report same experience so far. Get a big drum (3.8 - 4.0, say) and an internal heater.

We too have had the Kenmore front loader washer & matching dryer for about 5 years. Love the washer, it's wonderful, but the dryer, not so much. IMHO they're way over priced for what you get and don't work as well as the standard dryers. For example, it doesn't matter what we're drying, lighter cottons or jeans, small load or large, it takes an hour on medium heat to dry. And to dry our King Sized quilt takes 3-4 hours. When we call for service, they blame it on the venting, but we've checked it several times and can't find an issue with it. Since our model is older, it may be different now..but I sort of doubt it.

We have an 8 year old Bosch and we had one problem. The hot water stopped working. Being out in the country, we couldn't get anyone to come look. Then I thought I should look at the instruction manual. Duh. It said to open the bottom and look in some little drum to see if there was something there. Sure enough there was a dirty quarter. We removed it. Then the washer worked like a charm.
