What kind of lighting in my laundry room?

OK, I have done a search and can't find what I'm looking for.

What kind of lighting do most of you have in your laundry room? I was thinking of doing a fluorescent light. I thought it might help me locate stains better and give more light than a regular flush mount.

My laundry room is 6x8 with light beige/gray tile floor with one window. The cabinetry will painted SW Wheat (beige)with a chocolate glaze. I have no idea what color the walls will be but it will be something to give the room some color and liven it up a bit.

Thoughts anyone? I have to meet with the lighting people on Tuesday so I need to decide by then.

I have regular "cool white" fluorescent tubes in my laundry room (the basement) and I don't like them. While there is plenty of light, I find it very hard to see stains and the like because the light is rather garish. I'm thinking of trying full-spectrum ("daylight") fluorescent tubes. If those don't work, maybe compact-fluorescents, though that still leaves me choosing among cool/warm/daylight.

i have 2 recessed light cans in my laundry room and have put 2 150watt equivalent flourescent bulbs in them... i like the light(bright, white and direct) and MUCH prefer the look and lighting to the flourescent tubes with the plastic cover, which i've seen.... i highly recommend!

You can buy light bulbs which are called daylight. It gives off a pure white light which results in seeing the true color of things. Any type of lighting you put in you will be able to use these types of light bulbs.

Allison, I love your laundry room! I wish I had a bigger laundry room but just having one across from my bedroom and not in a tiny little closet and not having to go to the laundry mat is one of the nice features that sold me on the townhouse I bought a little less than 11 years ago. Where are your hampers? I just love your taste of knowing where everything should be in a room to create rooms with both class and beauty. I just bought two white wicker hampers with two compartments at Fran's Wicker & Rattan Furniture Store and were amazed at the just about no smell. They have velcro cotton drawstring bags inside and are very well sealed. I aired them out for a week so they will have no smell at all. I am glad I went with such pretty hampers that were reasonably priced for the quality. Now I have to take the suggestions I got from others on making the rest of the room nice when I have time.

Thank you, Anna, Kim, and Tanya. Your advice is very helpful. RNmom, I think because straightening the wall in that bedroom would make it less than 11" wide? I'm not sure. It does look a little weird. And I agree on taking out the double sinks in the kids' bath. We had them in the last house and they still were only in there one at a time. :-) We are in the midwest also (just moved back after 12 years in the South), and I was thinking I would move the coat closet up and put it across from the lockers. We need a coat closet for the big winter stuff, and the one in the foyer we'd never use since it's so far away. I really don't need lots of cabinets in the laundry/mudroom. I think the closet would be more useful.

My laundry area is in a hallway under the eaves on the second floor of a cape. I have recessed cans (3) in the hallway walking area, and a 4 lamp halogen track light setup for the laundry area. The track light bulbs are 50 watt halogen. The lighting is wonderful, the units are aimed to bounce light off the slanting ceiling, and the cabinetry. I tried using fluorescent floods in the recessed cans and the color of the lighting made me feel like I was in the dungeon. Got rid of those in a hurry, it was way too blue and garish for the colors of flooring and walls.
