Tell me about your futuro futuro hood
Comments (3)We have the Concorde waiting for other parts of our kitchen to be installed. When we tested it in our kitchen for checking the height, we were pleased with the noise and sucking power of the fan even tho it was just blowing out of the top pipe. The problem with this model is that it really needs to come down to be reachable for us vertically challenged types. I don't believe that will be a problem with the ones you have mentioned. The stainless steel does show fingerprints easily but is of good quality finish. We understand because our house is set up similarly tho I prefer the stereo on while cooking myself! :)...See MoreIsland countertop all one level vs. bi-level with bar seating
Comments (16)Thanks for all the great feedback! I hadn't thought about using the island as a serving buffet for parties, but I can see how that would be very useful. Also, the point about the comfort of the counter height stools vs. higher ones. My husband is tall, but I'm 5'5" and our son is only 14 months old. So probably lower seating would be more comfortable for us (and the grandparents). Right now we're not entertaining much, since we are busy chasing after the toddler, but pre-baby we entertained a lot and I'm hoping to again, once he gets a little older. I'm trying to plan for that. And I assume that down the road, he'll be doing homework in the kitchen and having friends over after school, etc. We do have a huge table in the diningroom, but that space doubles as our home office, so it's always covered with clutter (2 laptops, mail, paperwork, printing supplies, etc.). It would be nice to have an open expanse of space in the kitchen for actual kitchen projects, but I guess I'm afraid that we'll just fill that space up with clutter, too. ;) For those with the single-level island, how do you light your workspace? We were thinking of installing task lighting under the overhang from the bar to light the counter. Now we'll have to rely solely on pendant lighting, I guess. Is that sufficient? Also, do you have power outlets on the island? If we don't have a vertical surface behind the counter, it seems to limit us in terms of where we can plug in appliances....See MoreHow do you like your peninsula or island bi-level counter height
Comments (7)We have very much what you are describing, a wood bar at bar height with granite on the rest of the counters. Our peninsula is open to the eating area/family room around a corner. I admit, this is one area that was about form over function. I liked the way it highlights the open corner and separates the family room from the kitchen. Plus it is in my primary prep and cooking area (range adjacent) and I was afraid I'd feel like I was cooking in the family room without it. It also hides my little prep sink. The 25" counter depth does not seem too small to me, but I have lots of room to spread out side to side. We've never been a family to eat at an island or peninsula, and we don't use it that way now. In fact, we still haven't gotten any stools and I'm not entirely sure we will because people seem to enjoy just leaning against it or we use it to set up buffet style - whether it is a large family meal, or just snacks/hors d'oeuvres for visitors. From kitchen side: From family room side...See MoreTell me what you like about your oven layout
Comments (7)Have you taken your layout to the Kitchens Forum? A lot of layout mavens there don't spend a lot of time in Appliances. Yes, an oven, combi- microwave stack would be too high. Vaguely possible if the oven were at the lowest position at floor level, but that's a hateful place to put an oven. That's lower than a range oven would be. Combi-steam ovens are not good for low mounts. Some can't, but also when you open the door that low, unless you're conscientiously using a steam removal function, which generally takes half a minute, you're putting the steam out right where you don't want it. Many people are happy with undercounter microwaves, but just under. Not lower. Look into drawer versions as well as standard. If you're accustomed to watching, however, you're right that it's not a great height. On the other hand, ovens don't take a lot of tending, and sit very happily outside of the main workpath. You don't want them so far away that moving a heavy pot between cooktop and oven is difficult, but if shifting them over six feet makes everything flow much better, that works fine. In fact, some people don't like to have the ovens crowding the stove. Often a microwave is useful nearer to the fridge/beverage/snack area, but close enough to the cooking zone to not have to trek with your melted butter. The ideal level to lift a turkey from is approximately waist, or low-waist, where you can create the greatest muscle tension in your arms. Think of the classic flex your biceps angle, but with your arms down. It's easy to use a lever action from your knees and hips in that position, and not rely on your back to lift. You just kind of shift the pan over to the landing area, rather than having to do a snatch first. See if you can find a friend or showroom with similar layouts to what you're considering and play cook--or really cook if you can--to try it on. Bring pots and weights (large cans of tomatoes or bricks)....See Morefestusbodine
