FL Comparison: LG WM2650H versus Electrolux EWFLS70J

Hi there, I posted on here awhile ago looking for a front load washer that has an "add water" option. It seems like these are the only two washers that have this feature and I am stumped on which one to purchase. There is a considerable price difference between the two, but I've heard negative things about LGs customer service. Any thoughts?

I have no respect for a company (LG) that puts the blame on "user error" with it's top loading exploding washers and the fix they come up with is to adjust the software that slows down the spin speed.

Stick with Electrolux preferably from a local appliance store not one of the those big chain stores that doesn't give a damn after the sale.
A local company has a reputation to keep and uphold and wants your business.

Yes, I am buying from a local appliance store but he doesn't love either one of these brands (he likes GE but they don't have an "add water" feature). Thanks.

Wow! And I thought the granite vs solid surface discussions on the Kitchen Forum were lively...I think this discussion is at least as lively!! I just spent probably an hour or so reading every post...one thing I noticed is that no one mentions that many of the TL machines have temperature controlled water fill...mine has a "warm" and "cold" that mixes hot & cold water to meet what's considered "optimal" for cleaning purposes. The amount of each temp water used varies depending on the temp of the water coming in. My manual even states that detergents do not dissolve very well in cold water and that clothes do not wash as well either. What does work better in true cold water is rinse...items rinse more thoroughly in cold water than hot or warm. My washer does have the traditional "hot" and "cold" settings, but I never use "cold" and I only use "hot" for certain linens...I stick to the controlled warm & cold for the vast majority of my laundry. My experience w/washing in hot water is that colors fade quickly--especially darks (navy, black, etc.) so I don't like using hot water. BTW...those of us on a well worry more about water usage b/c we do not want our wells going dry! Which, right now in this moderate-to-severe drought is a very real concern (mid-Atlantic states). My concern, however, is FL options....do I have options for longer/shorter wash cycles, "type" of clothing cycles, "agitation" speed, rinse speed, additional rinse cycles, soak, and, very importantly, can I wash a KS comforter in it? I cannot do so in any (residential) TLer I've owned or seen to-date. For me, it looks like a FL is my primary option. Both my DS and I have allergies and I need to be able to wash our linens in HOT water (to kill dust mites)--that includes towels, sheets, blankets, comforters, curtains, rugs, etc. [My DS is very allergic to dust (i.e., dust mites)] I've been hearing that many of the European makers (Miele, for example) are stripping down their functionality for the US market--not an advantage in my case! I'm currently researching to find out which FL that is sold in the US is best--so if you live outside the US your washers probably don't compare to US washers...sorry, but your experiences w/specific manufacturers/machines, while interesting, may not be relevant to those of us in the US. Any thoughts or comments?

That's more than a little insecure on your part, don't you think? The reality of the situation is that, for example, all but the cheapest of dishwashers will get your dishes clean. There's just clean and not clean. There's no extra clean. I don't see much sense in paying for eight extra wash cycles I'll never use. I also don't see the return on investment in those eight extra cycles should I decide to sell my home because I have to hope that the prospective buyer appreciates the finer things. From what I've read here, that's a pretty elite group. Fine for you, but don't come in here and label people snobs. Calling people names is different than expressing an alternative opinion. Can you see the difference?

Suburbanmd, Some thought on commercial side of laundry. Most hotels, athletic facilities, hospitals, and others that do a lot of laundry use equipment that processes 35 lbs to 450 lbs or more wash at a time. There are versions called tunnel washers that do even more in huge continuous batches. Only a small fast food restaurants, small dry cleaners, or a hair salon might use household size equipment, everybody else has just too much laundry to do, and when you are paying the labor to do the laundry, it dwarfs utilities, chemicals, and equipment cost for total processing cost for most applications. Lots of talk about heaters, etc. Pros and cons to heaters. In the commercial business, most health officials seem to require 160 to 165F to kill the "bugs". That said, there are a few rare resistant ones that need 195F to kill them. For a nursing home with shared sheets and linens for many different individuals, this is a big deal to know that you have very good sanitation. Hotels the same. Some employ ozone as well in a cold water solution, but I am not certain of the CDC published position on this technology, at least the concentrations and hold time required to make it work. Lots depends on the thickness of the fabrics being washed and their permeability. A pillow is quite different when compared to a flat sheet. Nonetheless, 165F is really hot, and everything about hot, hot water has a tendency to shorten machine life cycles, be it your water heater, the water lines in your house, bearings, water hoses, the water inlet valves, the tub seals, the drain valves, the drain hoses, your plumbing drain pipes, and electronics in general. Thermal cycling (cold to hot and back again) is just plain tough on everything, and those heating elements suspended in the washer to do the heating can get coated with hair, lint, and other things that are part of your laundry. 165F is a risk to you as an operator or possibly to others in your household. Anything over 135F is considered a scalding risk. So let's say you start a heated wash cycle, get it real hot, and you or one of your significant others interrupts the cycle to get something out that they want access to. Wet clothes over 135F, not something you want to touch. Steel on the other hand can generally be touched up to 157 F without hazard to you, and glass higher yet because of its resistance to thermal conductivity. Anyhow, think about what your real need is vs what the sales guy is trying to sell you. The world is full of everyday decisions like this. Do you need a big SUV or pick up if you are never going to tow a thing or use it haul big heavy things? Could you rent a trailer a pull it with a small wagon or car instead for the handful of times you need to move something, saving up front investment and a bunch of gas. Why would laundry be any different. As a health care provider or spouse of a health care provider, it could make sense for the separate heat option, as your likelihood to encounter more nasty bugs exceeds the average homeowner.

I don't wash anything in cold water except some "collectible" decorated/screened cotton t-shirts that are variously black, navy, chocolate brown, or red. And that cold water may be 80°F+ degrees during summer months (TX), which is higher than the ATC warm temp (75°F-ish) on some (crippled) machines nowadays. Cold wash water shouldn't be less than 65°F so I temper it with warm if necessary during winter weather. Regards to towels, cotton white and light/pastel towels (and kitchen linens and white cotton socks) I give full-hot treatment between 130°F and 140°F depending on where I set my tankless water heater for the load. And chlorine bleach is usually added. No, they are not yellowed. Point of info, my dad gave to me a few very nice towels he found in their neighbor's trash (he kept a few as well) that were apparently used for decorative purposes and they had redecorated and tossed the towels. A couple had some discoloration on fold-lines. The discoloration disappeared after several washes. My go-to warm is 102°F to 105°F. Warmer is 112°F to 115°F. These temp ranges are used for casuals, shirts, shorts, underwear, slacks, jeans, bedding & blankets. I think people are being much too paranoid about shrinking. My sister is one who washes everything in cold "so our shirts don't shrink." Happens there was an incident a couple years ago when she got my grandmother's washer after granny died. Hubby connected the hot/cold hoses in reverse, so her cold wash and rinse was hot for several weeks. The machine kept beeping for help when the expected cold water flow was hot but they didn't know what that meant until I heard about it and advised what's the cause. Anyway, I never heard any mention that all their clothes had shrunk during that interim. Also, her old washer (a 1985 Maytag toploader) had a musty/smutzy odor from accumulated scum due to the cold water washing. I did hear her complain a few times about needing to find a good-smelling detergent (to cover the odor), and she uses a lot of Bounce dryer sheets. Keep in mind also that low temp on most dryers is 125°F to 135°F and high temp is 145°F to 155°F. Moisture evaporation initially keeps the fabric temp lower but items approach the target temp as the load progresses toward dryness.

Right now I'm pretty sure GE isn't making all their own appliances.
They could be made by LG or Samsung, though I thought I heard they were getting back to making their own products soon or in the near future.

Just so you know the "Add Water" feature only adds a few more gallons of water. Don't expect to see the amount of water as say a laundromat front loader uses.

jayetea, can I ask why you feel so strongly about the "add water" feature? By going into the settings mode on my Miele W3033 I can select "max water", which I have, but I think that the better manufacturers also do a lot of research on the optimal amount of water.

Since most of us grew up with top loaders I think that we're conditioned to think that the clothes have to swimming in water to get clean. They don't. I consistently get excellent cleaning and stain removal with the relatively miserly amount of water the Miele uses. Also keep in mind that more water dilutes the detergent, which reduces cleaning effectiveness.

I was talking to an appliance salesman yesterday, and he said that the reason that Miele and Bosch stopped offering full sized FL washers and dryers was that LG and Samsung essentially dumped products on the market and made their businesses unviable. This left only Electrolux as a viable FL brand for anyone who needs to wash clothes for more than 2 people.

Hi Richard, I need add water because we use cloth diapers and wash them at home. For diaper laundry, you really need to be able to get a lot of water in the machine to do a thorough cleaning.

We thought about a top loader but like front loaders for everything else, and we won't always have diapers to clean!

jayeta, I used to have LG WM2301 which I think was a predecessor of WM2650. It had very similar features, including Add Water. I liked that machine a lot and it did a great job washing. However, the additional water did not seem to make a difference in the water level in most loads. In other words, it wasn't significant enough to be noticeable. I now have WM3070 without the "Add Water" feature and like it just as well. It has Turbo Wash which appears to use more water in the cycle. Turbo Wash consists of two recirculating jets that spray the wash water onto the load all throughout the cycle and ensure better saturation of the load.
Another washer with the "Add Water" feature is the high end Frigidaire front loader FAFS4174. The feature is called Max Fill. I believe it also has recirculating jets which I think would be helpful for washing diapers. I have read some good reviews of that washer and considered it when buying my current LG. But my local stores did not have any Frigidaires on display and I was hesitant about buying a washer without seeing or touching it.
